The third season of Star Trek: Discovery beams down to Blu-ray next week, and to celebrate the series’ arrival on home media, we’ve teamed up with CBS & Paramount Home Entertainment to give away not one, not two, but three copies of the flagship Paramount+ Trek series to lucky TrekCore readers.
This contest has ended and our winners have been notified.
In addition to the Blu-ray set, all three of our winners will also receive this official USS Discovery baseball cap from CBS & Paramount Home Entertainment, straight out of the Crossfield-class starship’s own quartermaster supply.
For your chance to win one of these three Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Blu-ray prize packs, all you have to do is join us on social media and answer the following question:
From the start of the adventure on the USS Shenzhou to the Mirror Universe, from the Klingon homeworld to Talos IV, and from Michael Burnham’s childhood to the far future of the 32nd Century, the Discovery story has brought us all sorts of ships, characters, and locations…
You have until midnight (Eastern time) on Thursday, July 22 to get your entry in — we’ll reach out to the winners via Twitter or Facebook after the contest closes to arrange for fulfillment.
Good luck to all!
Contest open to TrekCore readers in the United States only due to supplier restrictions. The comments section of this article will not be considered for contest entries.
Please note that the FanSets Starfleet badge will ship separately from the Blu-ray and hat.
After more than 20 years since the Star Trek action figure heyday of the 1990s, Playmates Toys — who filled a decade’s worth of Trekkie collectors’ homes with playsets, action accessories, and character figures — announced their return to the final frontier to bring the next generation of Star Trek to their brand of toy production.
Revealed in a surprise release today on StarTrek.com, the toy company whose products are beloved to at least a few generations of Star Trek fans is returning to the market with new items in 2022, including “action figures…. and accessories” from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Picard, and the upcoming Star Trek: Prodigy series — and more from “the expansive Star Trek Universe of series and motion pictures.”
Squint and you’ll see Data, Burnham, Picard, Pike, Saru, and Ethan Peck’s Spock.
This teaser image joined the StarTrek.com announcement, which seems to hint at a Next Generation-era Commander Data, a Discovery Season 2-era Michael Burnham, Saru, Christopher Pike, and bearded Spock, and a Picard Season 1-era Jean-Luc Picard — all likely concept art underneath those transporter beams, but certainly an idea of where things are headed.
Here’s the official word, which teases the 2022 return of Playmates Toys’ Star Trek offerings:
Playmates Toys and ViacomCBS Consumer Products today announced that ViacomCBS has awarded the global toy company with the licensing rights for action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories for all Star Trek properties.
Playmates will launch its new Star Trek toy line in 2022, following Star Trek’s entry into kids’ content with the premiere of Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences.
Among the qualities Playmates will bring to the Star Trek Universe are its attention to brand detail, authentic portrait sculpting, and new product innovations it plans to introduce to its forthcoming Star Trek collections.
Fans can look forward to a new lineup of action figures and accessories from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Lower Decks, Star Trek: Picard, other Star Trek series throughout the universe coming soon, and future selections from the expansive Star Trek Universe of series and motion pictures, including the Paramount+ CG-animated series Star Trek: Prodigy produced by Nickelodeon Animation Studio and CBS Studios.
Details on forthcoming product lines from Playmates will be announced at a future date.
And it’s not just action figures on the way, as a statement from ViacomCBS’s licensing division implies “ships and more” will be companion offerings in the upcoming release slate.
“As Star Trek readies to beam into the kids’ space for the first time with Star Trek: Prodigy on Paramount+, we are thrilled to also enter the toy aisle with Playmates, offering a new generation of fans out of this world toys that will allow them to embark on their own Star Trek adventures at home,” said Dion Vlachos, Executive Vice President, Hardlines and Retail, ViacomCBS Consumer Products.
“Playmates Toys has deep experience in developing Star Trek figures and playsets – in fact, they helped to define and raise the stature of the range of collectibles. The expertise and ingenuity they plan to bring to figures, ships and more will elevate the play experience for kids and collectors alike.”
We know many of our readers are big collectors of the 1990s run of Playmates Star Trek action figures, playsets, play accessories, and starships, so the news that this beloved licensee is back in the Trek galaxy once more is certainly welcome news.
Which characters, accessories, or ships from the modern run of Star Trek shows will you be adding to your collection when they hit the market next year — and what characters from the Trek legacy series deserve a new time in the action figure spotlight?
Last week’s Star Trek movie news rocked the week-ending discussion, and the new week is keeping the Trek news coming as we move deeper into summer!
Yesterday we got a brief new teaser for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 2, set to debut on Paramount+ on August 12, which features Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Boimler (Jack Quaid) in a starbase car chase, clad in uniforms seemingly inspired by the Star Trek: Insurrection-era Starfleet dress uniforms.

Spotted during the 15-second video are a group of Antedians, an upgraded Original Series-era starbase (inspired by the Star Trek: Vanguard book covers), and what seems to be a set of Commander Data statuettes in their vehicle’s rear compartment.

In other new videos, the first deleted scene from Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 was released today through ComicBook.com, ahead of next week’s Season 3 Blu-ray release.
Burnham offers Captain Saru her opinion in a deleted scene from “Su’Kal.”
Trimmed from “Su’Kal,” the scene gives Burnham a moment to challenge Discovery Captain Saru on the emotional involvement in his command decisions. While video isn’t able to be embedded here, you can jump over to ComicBook.com to watch it now.

Finally today, the 2021 Emmy Award nominations were released to celebrate the year of television, and both of last year’s eligible Star Trek series made the cut for their impressive technical achievements.
Lower Decks landed their first Emmy Nomination, as the animated series’ freshman season was recognized in the Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series (Half-Hour) and Animation category (for “No Small Parts,” the season finale).
Discovery was also given some time in the spotlight, nabbing four nominations for its Season 3 production work.
The show got shout-outs in the Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup and Outstanding Sound Editing For A Comedy Or Drama Series categories (for “That Hope is You, Part 1”), in the Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) category (for “Terra Firma, Part 2”), as well as kudus for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Single Episode (for “Su’Kal”).
The 73rd Emmy Awards will be announced during the prime-time ceremony on Sunday, September 19 on CBS.
The next Star Trek movie — announced in April for a 2023 release with a surprisingly scarce amount of accompanying information — and today, the famous Bad Robot mystery box seemed to crack open a bit as the director and screenwriters for the upcoming project have been named.
Reported first by Deadline tonight— and we’ve since confirmed the news with Paramount Pictures — 2023’s movie is set to be directed by Matt Shakman, fresh off of his nine-episode run helming the Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision — a show which nabbed an impressive 23 Emmy Award nominations this morning, including one for Shakman’s directing work on the series.
Matt Shakman (left) directs Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany on the set of ‘WandaVision.’ (Disney+)
In addition to his recent work for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shakman’s also spent time directing episodes of highly-regarded television series like HBO’s Succession and Game of Thrones, Amazon’s The Boys, and FX’s Fargo, You’re the Worst, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
The still-untitled Star Trek film, produced by J.J. Abrams, is centered on a script from writers Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet; while Beer’s published credits are mostly for projects still in development or in pre-production, Robertson-Dworet’s credits include Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel feature, as well as the 2018 Tomb Raider film.
If produced as reported — and heaven knows these things have fallen apart several times over the last six years — 2023 would be the first Star Trek film written by women.
In addition to the new about the film’s behind-the-scenes team, Deadline’s reporting also indicates that the 2023 film is going to move swiftly into production, with filming set to begin as early as next spring… a necessity if Paramount Pictures wants to have it in theaters on June 9, 2023.
We still don’t have any additional news on the movie’s story, casting, or even what part of the Star Trek multiverse it’ll be set in — as Paramount’s keeping a tight lid on the film’s details, aside from today’s news — but as more news comes out about this next big-screen adventure, you can be sure we’ll bring it to you here at TrekCore.

In addition, stick around to listen to Thad’s theory about what the Paramount+ exclusivity period for the Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture might mean for the possibility of other Star Trek remastering projects exclusively on the streaming service, and Alex’s wish for the future of EXO-6’s 1:6-scale action figure lineup!

We’re back with a look ahead to what’s coming down the interstellar pipeline from Hero Collector, as today we can bring you a trio of exclusive first looks at October’s upcoming additions to the Official Star Trek Starships Collection!
First up is the next addition to the slowly-growing Star Trek Universe collection: the eighth ship from Star Trek: Picard is the Romulan Flagship commanded by infiltrator Commodore Oh in “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2.”
The ship is certainly more yellow that it initially seemed in its Picard appearance, but some of the screencaps from “Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2” do reflect the coloring seen on the Hero Collector model — so as with too many of the Secret Hideout-era Trek starships, the full look of its design was not very evident on-screen.

ROMULAN FLAGSHIP (ISSUE #8) — A slim and sleek Romulan vessel designed as a warship, this starship
sported the crescent-shaped “wings” characteristic of Romulan vessels, as well as a prominent bridge window. Developed in the years after the destruction of Romulus, this ship saw mass deployment above the planet Coppelius – where it squared off against a Federation fleet led by William T. Riker!
The Romulan Flagship starship model measures in at about 5.5 inches wide, and is expected to retail at $54.95 / €49.99 / £39.99.

Next up is another entry to the larger-scale XL Starships lineup, the ill-fated Oberth-class vessel USS Pegasus (NCC-53847), as it appeared before it was embedded inside an asteroid after experimenting with illegal phase-cloaking technology (TNG: “The Pegasus”).
The first Oberth-class model released in the Official Starhips Collection was the USS Grissom from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, which became available to collectors in the subscription-scale size back in 2014.
This will make the XL Grissom a nice change from that original model; while it retains the same Oberth-class design — as both ships used the same physical model during Star Trek production — it’s always nice when there’s some variation in starship registries to help round out fans’ collections.

USS PEGASUS (Issue 28): A prototype Oberth-class starship, the USS Pegasus served as a testbed for many technologies… including a cloaking system which broke the Federation’s peace treaty with the Romulan Empire! The Pegasus was destroyed in testing, and its true purpose was covered up by Starfleet – until Jean-Luc Picard and the USS Enterprise were tasked with retrieving its wreckage…
This hand-painted XL model captures the Oberth-class Pegasus in precise detail, just as it appeared in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The oversized Oberth-class starship measures about 9.5 inches long, and will retail at $75.00 / €64.99 / £49.99.

Finally, we can round out October’s new releases with another addition to the Star Trek Online series of starship models: the Damar-class Cardassian Science Dreadnought, named for the rebellious leader who helped overthrow the Dominion occupation of the Empire.

DAMAR-CLASS CARDASSIAN SCIENCE DREADNOUGHT (Issue 19): A modernized vessel available to Cardassian players in Star Trek Online, the Damar-class Science Intel Dreadnought is named for the famous Cardassian leader who rose up and led a rebellion against the rule of the Dominion.
Equipped with a vast array of sensory and analytical capabilities, this massive dreadnought was designed to fully assess the enemy before a single shot is fired.
A smaller starship, the Damar-class measures about 5.5 inches in length and will retail at $29.95 / €24.99 / £19.99.
We’ll be back next month for another round of exclusive previews of Hero Collector’s upcoming Star Trek starship models — in the meantime, let us know what you think about October’s releases in the comments below!
For the second year in a row, San Diego Comic Con has turned into an online-only event — and the Star Trek Universe is once again part of the streaming show, as Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy will each have panels to preview their upcoming seasons!
Announced this week ahead of the July 23 event, the cast and creative teams behind Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy will be participating in online panels to preview their second and first seasons, respectively, before they debut on Paramount+ this year; each panel will be moderated by Lower Decks star Jerry O’Connell (Ransom).
The very first Star Trek: Prodigy panel will give fans their first insights on the upcoming animated series from the show’s recently-announced cast, as returning Trek star Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) will be joined by Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Angus Imrie (Zero), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), and Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog) to discuss the show.
Also participating in the Prodigy panel are series executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman, along with director Ben Hibon — and we’d be very surprised if we don’t some substantial news from this panel, such as our first footage from the animated series, or perhaps even a premiere date for Star Trek: Prodigy.
The Star Trek: Lower Decks panel will feature series creator/showrunner Mike McMahan, joined by series leads Tawny Newsome (Mariner), Jack Quaid (Boimler), and Eugene Cordero (Rutherford) to preview the second season, set to arrive on August 12.
With the debut of Lower Decks Season 2 scheduled just two weeks after the SDCC@Home event, it’s likely we’ll get more footage from the upcoming new episodes as part of this discussion as well.
The Star Trek Universe animation panels will begin at 10 AM PT (1PM ET) on Friday, July 23, and be available for fans worldwide to watch on the San Diego Comic Con’s YouTube channel.
Of course, we’ll bring you all the news that arrives from these Star Trek discussions here at TrekCore, so keep your sensors locked on our site and social media feeds for all the latest!

Our friends at Factory Entertainment, now in their second year of bringing Star Trek prop replicas to fans, are back this week with a brand new announcement for those of you who like to wear blue uniforms aboard the Enterprise-D!
Factory Entertainment — 'Star Trek: TNG' Medical Set Prop Replica

Contained in a display case with ‘Starfleet-issue’ plaque, the Next Generation-era hypospray — based upon the 24th century’s alternative to syringes — is a die-cast metal prop replica (the bodies of each replica is metal, with some components in ABS plastic or acrylic), with built-in battery-powered electronics to replicate the well-known “hsss” sound effect heard when injecting medication.
The hypospray features two buttons, each which triggers a different sound effect, and interchangeable medical vials which will be held in the replica’s handle with magnets. (Factory Entertainment’s listing also notes that the eventual product “may” come with user-fillable vials, but that’s still only just a possibility that has not yet been finalized.)
Sound effect 1: Standard administration (the usual “hsss”)
A hand scanner seen in TNG Season 1, and the Factory Entertainment replica (prototype).
The medical hand scanner, usually paired with one of sickbay’s medical tricorders, is also a die-cast metal piece; this one features a battery-powered, blinking red LED light to replicate the activation light seen on the screen-used device — along with a scanning sound effect.
Unlike the hand scanner seen in the later seasons of The Next Generation — which had a set of rotating green lights around the end — the Factory Entertainment prototype images seem to mirror the early-season design, which features just the red light in the center of the scanner’s ‘business end.’
One may think the scanner cannot be used without a paired medical tricorder, however Dr. Pulaski did just that in TNG Season 2’s “Up the Long Ladder,” scanning the Mariposan clones and identifying their copied nature using just her scanner.
While the 1997 Playmates Toys play-replica medical tricorder included a plastic hand scanner, to our knowledge this is the first time a licensed replica of a Star Trek: The Next Generation-era hypospray has ever been produced — and certainly the first one to include electronic sound effects.
Here’s Factory Entertainment’s official product description:
Factory Entertainment’s TNG Medical Set Replica has been copied directly from surviving resources in the CBS archives to ensure accuracy. Our development team also spent many hours analyzing footage to fine-tune the details.
This 1:1 scale set replicates two iconic props used by 24th century physicians in Star Trek: The Next Generation. It consists of a Hypospray (with interchangeable vials) and a Hand Scanner. Both feature electronic light and/or sound effects and are crafted with heavy diecast metal bodies.
Each numbered limited edition museum quality replica set comes with a wooden presentation case, cast metal plaque and a certificate of authenticity/prop story booklet and will make a fine addition to any Star Trek collection.
The Hypospray and the Hand Scanner each operate on three LR44 batteries (included).
We don’t expect this to be anywhere close to the last time Factory Entertainment will visit the Star Trek universe, to keep your sensors locked here on TrekCore for all the latest news on this medical kit — and anything else they may pull out of the 24th century in the future!
In the meantime, do you plan to add this new Next Generation replica set to your own collection? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
Announced through StarTrek.com this evening, this September will see the Star Trek: The Motion Picture(Theatrical Edition), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (Theatrical and Director’s Editions), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home all get a boost to the next level with brand-new 4K UHD remastered transfers.
The 4K Blu-ray and standard Blu-ray collections, with outer slipcover artwork.
Available for preorder now, this set — billed as Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection, as we are expecting the later films to come in separate, follow-up sets — this new release will feature both improved picture quality with Dolby Vision mastering, along with an isolated score track for The Motion Picture.(This appears to be the only new bonus feature in the collection.)
The formal announcement:
For the first time ever, experience the original four Star Trek films in stunning 4K Ultra HD. Newly remastered from original elements for optimal picture quality, each film is presented with Dolby Vision® and HDR-10.
This exceptional collection includes four Ultra HD discs, as well as four remastered Blu-ray discs with hours of previously released bonus content.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (both the theatrical and director’s cut), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home are presented on both the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Discs, along with access to digital copies of the theatrical version of each film.
While all of the other bonus features on the set are carried over from the previous Blu-ray editions (fully detailed at the StarTrek.com announcement), the standard Blu-ray discs in this new collection appear to contain the newly-remastered picture — which is great for those of you who haven’t yet made the leap to 4K but are interested in the upgraded visuals on each film.
Each of the original four Star Trek films will also be available individually on Blu-ray…
Newly remastered versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (both the theatrical and director’s cut), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home are presented in high definition along with digital copies of the theatrical version of each film.
And good news, international fans — while this new collection arrives in the United States and Canada on September 7, it’s not limited to North America!
The 4K Star Trek film collection will make its way to the United Kingdom on September 6, and then to France on September 8, followed by Germany on September 9. For those of you in other locations, no specific dates have been announced — but Paramount’s Blu-ray and 4K collections are typically region free so you may be able to import as needed.
* * * *
As we mentioned above, this is the first four films only — and its quite likely that one follow-up set (featuring the six other films), or two follow-up sets (split between V, VI, Generations and First Contact / Insurrection / Nemesis) will follow, however there’s no specific news on that front yet.
While we’ll take them all now, now, now! of course, this actually makes sense for a few reasons (if it occurs as we are speculating); it will be easier to ask fans to spend, say, $80 three times over a year, rather than one $300 price tag up front.
In addition, including one of the ‘premiere’ Trek films in each of our three hypothetical collections — Wrath of Khan in the first one, The Undiscovered Country in round two, and First Contact in the third set — gives each collection a ‘draw’ for fans along the way.
For those wondering why this set only includes films 1-4, it’s because it takes time to remaster all these films and the studio is doing them in batches. You’ll get 4 on 9/7, and the others will follow next year.
Besides, if Paramount released a 10-film 4K remastered box set first, people would b—- that it’s too expensive and they only wanted one or two of the films. The more of you who buy this first set now, the more comfortable Paramount will be in continuing to spend the money to release them all.
Vote with your dollars and don’t get picky if you want them all. Fans who got picky with ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation – Remastered’ on Blu-ray essentially ensured that ‘Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – Remastered’ got cancelled.
The other question not yet answered: when will these remastered versions of the Star Trek films land on streaming services? We know that the still-in-development Director’s Edition of The Motion Picture will arrive first as a Paramount+ exclusive, but there’s not yet any information on when we’ll see these other 4K editions outside of the Blu-ray format.
Fans in Europe have reported listings of Star Trek: First Contact on the Rakuten streaming service in 4K UHD format, so it’s likely just a matter of time until the next round of Star Trek films makes their way elsewhere.
