2023’s STAR TREK Film Lands a Director, WANDAVISION’s Matt Shakman; Filming Reportedly Starts Next Spring

The next Star Trek movie — announced in April for a 2023 release with a surprisingly scarce amount of accompanying information — and today, the famous Bad Robot mystery box seemed to crack open a bit as the director and screenwriters for the upcoming project have been named.

Reported first by Deadline tonight— and we’ve since confirmed the news with Paramount Pictures — 2023’s movie is set to be directed by Matt Shakman, fresh off of his nine-episode run helming the Marvel / Disney+ series WandaVision — a show which nabbed an impressive 23 Emmy Award nominations this morning, including one for Shakman’s directing work on the series.

In addition to his recent work for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Shakman’s also spent time directing episodes of highly-regarded television series like HBO’s Succession and Game of Thrones, Amazon’s The Boys, and FX’s Fargo, You’re the Worst, and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The still-untitled Star Trek film, produced by J.J. Abrams, is centered on a script from writers Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet; while Beer’s published credits are mostly for projects still in development or in pre-production, Robertson-Dworet’s credits include Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel feature, as well as the 2018 Tomb Raider film.

If produced as reported — and heaven knows these things have fallen apart several times over the last six years — 2023 would be the first Star Trek film written by women.

This would make the 2023 project yet another take on a Star Trek story, after just in March, writer Kalinda Vazquez was tapped to script a Trek film — clearly just not this one.

In addition to the new about the film’s behind-the-scenes team, Deadline’s reporting also indicates that the 2023 film is going to move swiftly into production, with filming set to begin as early as next spring… a necessity if Paramount Pictures wants to have it in theaters on June 9, 2023.

We still don’t have any additional news on the movie’s story, casting, or even what part of the Star Trek multiverse it’ll be set in — as Paramount’s keeping a tight lid on the film’s details, aside from today’s news — but as more news comes out about this next big-screen adventure, you can be sure we’ll bring it to you here at TrekCore.
