We’re back with the final part of our look back at 2013, covering our favorite exclusive interview and video features only found at TrekCore!

We had the opportunity to interview three of the most influential members of the 24th Century: TNG writer and Voyager/Enterprise executive producer Brannon Braga, and TNG/DS9 writer/producers Ronald D. Moore and Ira Steven Behr.

While the conversation with Moore and Behr focused predominately on their tenure on the Next Generation team in the wake of the show’s second and third seasons, it offers a great deal of insight into the stressful world of the series at that time.

Brannon Braga’s interview — while covering things like the overuse of the Borg in Voyager and fan criticism of his writing talents — is perhaps best known as the source of the “Enterprise on Netflix” campaign.

Braga idly speculated that if Netflix streaming viewership numbers were impressive enough, the cancelled series might be revived… but some Internet sites took his hypothetical scenario as gospel, starting unlikely-to-succeed Facebook campaigns and running attention-grabbing headlines. Braga himself eventually responded, attempting to quell the fires:

Our biggest contribution to the Trek world this year — and perhaps ever — was the discovery of a set of early, uncut episodes of The Next Generation which featured dozens of minutes of never-before-seen footage. Friend of the site Cyril Paciullo generously shared copies of several production-era VHS tapes he purchased at auction, and we worked hard to present the recovered cut scenes to the world for the first time.

While the footage we found was uncovered too late to be included on the Season Two or Season Three Blu-ray releases, our efforts did not go unrecognized: because of TrekCore’s video series, the TNG remastering team at CBS began working tirelessly to review the remaining seasons of the show… and began including fully-restored, high-definition deleted scenes on the Blu-rays for Season Four, Five, and beyond.

And because we couldn’t help ourselves, we also wanted to highlight several scenes that we want to see someday restored from the film vaults in our Scenes Worth Saving series: the often-teased Wesley Crusher’s 16th birthday party, the living space jellyfish in “Encounter at Farpoint,” and more.

features

2013 was a big year for TrekCore’s growing collection of meticulously researched, highly original feature interviews — things that we’ve always wanted to know about, but have never seen covered anywhere! From decades-old cereal boxes to weapons-grade marketing promotions, we went where (pardon the pun) no other Trek publication has gone before!

In October, we tracked down former Boole & Babbage marketing director Pat Letsos, who finally gave us the inside scoop on 1994’s The Vision, a six-minute promotional video starring Jonathan Frakes (in character as Commander Riker) advertising the company’s line of computer networking solutions. This infomercial had been making the rounds on YouTube for several years, and we were excited to finally share the story behind the viral video!

In September, we connected with Trek collector Marc Derro, a North Carolina resident in possession of one of the few remaining Star Trek: Voyager photon torpedo media kits distributed to local television stations in 1999.

After Marc was kind enough to share photographs and video of his priceless Trek artifact, we managed to get in touch with Susan J. Sullivan, a longtime marketing executive who actually supervised the design of the torpedo kit in the first place! Sullivan took the time to explain the entire genesis of the Voyager torpedo, from initial concept ideas, to manufacturing problems, to final execution.

After we published this article, one of our readers in the UK surprised us by

Finally, our big reveal of the fall was our massive, multi-part series covering the failed Next Generation line of toys produced by Galoob in the late 1980’s. We started off in September by digging into the nationwide Cheerios cereal contest launched around the debut of the series, offering winners a walk-on role aboard the Enterprise-D and prizes from Galoob’s then-unreleased toy line.

Feature: Star Trek and Cheerios, Part of a Balanced Breakfast

.   .   .

We followed that up with one of the year’s most popular features, a giant three-part interview with Galoob toy designers Jim Fong and Bob DiGiacomo, two artists who were instrumental in the production of the first wave of Next Generation toys. In this twenty-fifth anniversary retrospective, we covered everything from the initial visits to the TNG sets to aborted toy concepts to New York City’s annual Toy Fair trade show — a one-of-a-kind release that will should not be missed!

As we head into the new year, we want to once again thank all of our loyal readers for sharing our stories, photos, and video features, for chatting with us on Twitter and Facebook, and for helping to support our site by purchasing your Trek toys, books, and Blu-rays through our links.

There’s still plenty of news, original reporting, and archival research yet to come in 2014, so stick around — and see you next year!

TrekCore’s Best of 2013: Creating Trek for TV

tc2013_banner

Our look back at TrekCore’s best stories of 2013 continues with a set of top-notch features focused on the production of The Next GenerationDeep Space Nine, and Voyager — with exclusive documents, photographs, video presentations, and CG renders!

As we approach the end of the Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray releases, fan anticipation of seeing Deep Space Nine in high definition is growing by the day — and the biggest Deep Space Nine news of the year came in the form of a huge TrekCore exclusive: the surprise that all of the computer-generated effects created for DS9 still exist! We were fortunate to speak with Rob Bonchune — the CG supervisor who worked on who worked on three Trek series — and he revealed that just about everything created for DS9 and Voyager lie in the hands of the digital artists who built the effects.

Rob Bonchune: If they ask one of us – and if they use a team that uses LightWave – it’ll be much easier for them to redo… because the guys who worked on it, like me, have the assets. We have the original ships; we have most of everything that was used [in the making of the series]. That would eliminate a ton of the cost of rebuilding.

We spent a lot of time digging into the making of The Next Generation this year, covering several angles not included in the new Blu-ray documentaries. In August, we managed to get our hands on a set of rare behind-the-scenes photographs taken during the production of Season Four’s “Identity Crisis,” showing LeVar Burton being transformed into a wild Tarchannen III alien.

Two veteran artists who worked on the prosthetics — Gil Mosko and Jill Rockow — spoke to us about the tricky, multi-hour makeup process needed to complete the job.

We also took a look at the anamorphic widescreen photography used on TNGutilized when combining visual effects with moving live-action footage. Our reported featured not only time-consuming widescreen image reconstructions, but a before-and-after video comparison showing off some of the original footage taken from TNG production video.

One of our more challenging behind-the-scenes features this year came in the form of three in-depth examinations of TNG’s visual effects, courtesy of rare production workprints made available exclusively to TrekCore. Using this previously-unreleased video, we were able to create direct transitions from the raw, bluescreen-laden footage to the completed, high-definition effects which made it to the final version of each episode.

July’s popular Voyager Week included several special reports, including a special editorial by Voyager CG Supervisor Rob Bonchune, where he told the story of how the first all-CG Voyager model was created. From the earliest beginnings involving scans of the studio model to the evolution of the CG model during the series run.

The biggest part of Rob’s presentation, though, were a set of all-new Voyager renders created exclusively for TrekCore — complete with a ton of fresh digital upgrades!

We presented a look at the visual effects used in Season Four’s “Scientific Method” thanks to an unfinished episode workprint provided by one of our readers. By comparing annotated and bluescreen-laden raw footage to the completed effects in the broadcast version of the episode, we were able to show off some of the hard work that went into making the episode great — with special comments from Rob Bonchune!

Voyager Week also included an inside look at the making of “False Profits” with episode writer George Brozak! Not only did George provide an enormous amount of insight into the story development process that went into the making of the Season Three episode, but he also supplied several rare production sketches, internal casting documentation, filming schedules, and set photographs.

The most special part of this material was video taken directly from the raw shooting footage — never seen by fans before our article — which included a look at some of the visual effects work as well as all new outtakes from the sets.

Come back tomorrow as we wrap our year in review, covering our biggest and most important stories of 2013!

TrekCore’s Best of 2013: A Big Year for Blu-ray

tc2013_banner

2013 has been TrekCore’s biggest year so far, with some of the best stories, interviews, and videos we’ve ever produced. We’re thankful for all of our readers who have been sharing and commenting along the way, but we know there are a lot of newcomers who have joined us over the last few months — and we want to catch you up on some of our favorites from this year!

We’re starting off with a look back at the huge amount of high-definition Trek released in 2013, from the crazy Into Darkness Blu-ray fiasco to interviews with the masterminds behind the brilliant Next Generation and Enterprise bonus features!

div_spacer

headline_STID

Whether you loved or loathed the film, it’s hard to deny that the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-ray was probably the most mishandled home media release of the franchise. It took our team the better part of a week to dig into every corner of the messy Into Darkness Blu-ray, working not only to track down what features were produced for the set, but also to decipher where people could find it all!

With six features on the retail release, twelve features spread across in-store exclusives (and international borders), and an audio commentary relegated to the iTunes digital release, we congratulate those of you who were able to find copies of every feature for your collection — but we still don’t get why Paramount made it so difficult for the rest of us.

This year continued the impressive roll out of The Next Generation to Blu-ray, with three complete seasons and three standalone features hitting stores throughout 2013 — and we published six in-depth reviews to go with each home media release.

Blu-ray Reviews: TNG Season 3 · TNG Season 4 · TNG Season 5
“The Best of Both Worlds” · “Redemption” · “Unification”

.   .   .

But we started off the year with a massive seven-part interview with TNG Blu-ray VAM producer Robert Meyer Burnett, covering everything from the archival research that goes into the newly-produced bonus features, to arranging the massive cast, crew, and production team reunions, to the future of the Trek Blu-ray releases.

We also dug deep into the Enterprise Season One Blu-ray release, where we shared our amazement at the raw candor expressed by the production team and writing staff — but we also expressed our frustration and disappointment at the resurgence of the dreaded retailer-exclusive bonus features which restricted a special look at “Shuttlepod One” to Best Buy’s low-rent streaming service.

Blu-ray Reviews: Enterprise Season One · “Shuttlepod One” Declassified

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to put together a review for Season Two due to some of our other major projects this year, but look for our Season Three Blu-ray review in January!

.   .   .

We ended 2012 with the somewhat surprising news that all four seasons of Enterprise would be released on Blu-ray starting in 2013 — and in February, we spoke with Enterprise VAM producer Roger Lay, Jr., in a highly-detailed five-part interview covering everything from setting up the impressive “In Conversation” special with Rick Berman and Brannon Braga to the previously-unused behind-the-scenes specials produced during the series’ run.

ENTERPRISE Season Four Blu-ray News Roundup · Trailer Screencaps and Downloads

14

We broke a lot of Star Trek: Enterprise news last week: not only was TrekCore the first site to report the announcement of a new round-table writer’s reunion feature coming on the Season Four Blu-ray set in April, but we were the first to present the trailer and cover art for the final season set as well!

ents4cover

Since the news broke, there have been a couple of updates from around the web offering insight into what seems to be a can’t-miss look behind the scenes from the show’s primary writing team.

First, Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits reported some details of the writers’ conversation, from Trek VAM gurus Roger Lay, Jr., and Robert Meyer Burnett:

The Digital Bits: “VAM producers Roger Lay, Jr. and Robert Meyer Burnett tell me that lots more discussion of “season five and beyond” ideas will be included in the documentaries on the Season Four BD set…

I can’t wait to see this when it’s finally released on Blu-ray in 2014.”

Additionally, Enterprise writer David A. Goodman stopped by the comments section over at TrekMovie to answer the big question we were all asking: where was Season Four showrunner Manny Coto in Brannon Braga’s photo of the reunion?

David A. Goodman: “We had a great time, but it was a warts-and-all discussion that I think will surprise a lot of people…

Manny had a last minute problem at “24” and couldn’t make it. Brannon [Braga] and the writers who worked with him on Season 4 (Mike [Sussman], Andre [Bormanis], Judy and Gar [Reeves-Stevens]) spent a lot of time talking about his positive influence on the show.”

As disappointing as that news is, it’s a relief to know that Coto was intending to participate before his obligations to the “24” revival got in the way. His contributions to the fourth season of Enterprise brought about some of the show’s most well-loved storylines, so we hope to see him in the newly-produced interviews which will accompany the Blu-ray set.

Finally, we have the usual, often-requested high-resolution downloads of the Season Four Blu-ray trailer available through the links below, as well as a collection of HD screencaps from the preview footage. Looking at the still frames — especially at actor close-ups — you can really see how different the switch to digital photography made the series look in 2004.

ENTERPRISE Season 4 Coming April 1, 2014

28

It won’t hit stores until April 2014 — and Season Three hasn’t even been released yet — but CBS has just published the trailer for the fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise on Blu-ray!

[iframe src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/zLyzVyMAs3I” width=”560″ height=”315″]

The special release will come with its very own exclusive set of special features similar to the first two seasons released in 2013, including “Before Her Time: Decommissioning Enterprise,” a four-part documentary comprised of cast and crew interviews, and “In Conversation: Writing Star Trek Enterprise,” a 90-minute writing staff reunion. As soon as we have more details about the contents, we’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Also featured in this trailer is the first look at the Blu-ray set’s cover art:

ents4cover
Yikes. And we thought the Season Three artwork was rough.

There’s the recurring theme of making Scott Bakula out of puzzle pieces (in this case, he looks like he’s falling asleep); burying Connor Trinneer in the back of the cast when he and Jolene Blalock are the second leads on the show; the odd choice to cut off half the actors’ faces… even the title treatment is mishandled.

ents4_testThere’s no need to squish everyone together on the cover.

There’s no reason for the Star Trek: Enterprise logo to be rendered in black when all three previous season were done in white. Unless CBS Home Entertainment is planning to make an alternate Mirror Universe cover — the only time the show’s title was portrayed in black in the four seasons Enterprise was on the air — this is just a choice to mismatch the spines of the other Enterprise Blu-ray sets.

Those of you who are sticklers for uniformity may want to brace yourselves; let’s hope a few changes are made between now and the April release.

Anyway, as soon as we have them, we’ll bring you full-resolution screencaps from the trailer, high-definition downloadable versions, and all the other usual goodies.

In the meantime, you can pre-order Season Four today through Amazon at the link below! We’ll post UK and Germany order links when they are available.

Enterprise Writers Reunion Coming on Season Four Blu-rays

Star Trek: Enterprise co-creator and executive producer Brannon Braga revealed today that the Season Four Blu-ray set (due out in 2014) will include another “In Conversation”-style roundtable reunion — similar to the Enterprise cast reunion found on Season Two — with the writing staff of the four-season show.

ent_writers_tweet

Most of the already-released roundtable discussions found on the Enterprise and Next Generation Blu-ray sets have been fascinating pieces to watch, and this one will sure to be another winner… though it’s a bit disappointing not to see writer and Season Four executive producer Manny Coto with the rest of the staff.

New “Star Trek: Nemesis” Expanded Soundtrack · Interview with Producer Lukas Kendall

January sees the release of the final expanded soundtrack from the original ten films – the final adventure of the Next Generation crew, Star Trek: Nemesis – issued by Varèse Sarabande. We caught up with soundtrack Producer Lukas Kendall to get the inside scoop on the newest Trek soundtrack.

Lukas Kendall

Lukas Kendall – Star Trek: Nemesis Soundtrack Interview

div_spacer

TrekCore: It’s great to talk to you again, Lukas! This time last year, we asked you about the possibility of an expanded Star Trek: Nemesis soundrack – and now we’ve heard the great news that Varèse Sarabande will be putting out that set next month.

Tell us the story behind this set. I understand that Bob Townson, the producer at Varèse Sarabande, is a big Jerry Goldsmith fan.

Lukas Kendall: Bob Townson is a huge Goldsmith fan; he worked with Jerry on many original soundtrack albums and re-recordings. Bob has been busy this year, touring with a concert series celebrating Varèse’s 35th anniversary, so it was a fortunate circumstance where I could do some of the production work on the expanded Nemesis set.

He’s done well over a thousand soundtrack CDs – so he certainly doesn’t need my help – but this was a happy case where the timing made sense for me to work on this project. I’ve known Bob for over two decades and this is the first time I’ve been able to collaborate on an album with him.

nem_soundtrack

TrekCore: Nemesis completes a rather personal project for you and many others: finally issuing the last of the complete, extended Original Series and Next Generation movie soundtracks. Talk to us a bit about the journey – did you ever think you’d get here?

Lukas Kendall: Yes, I did think we’d get here, to be honest. I didn’t know exactly how it would unfold – or how long it would take – but in the end, it happened more or less as I had hoped. It was a very long process of rebuilding and modernizing the relationships between Paramount, CBS, GNP/Crescendo, and the many record labels that have rights to different titles.

Like a lot of collectors from my generation, I have gone from holding a tape recorder to the television set in order to hear unreleased cues to having a couple thousand tracks of Star Trek music in iTunes folders. It’s totally unreal how it happened; it’s given us instant access to each composer’s interpretation of Star Trek storytelling. I could have outlined, seven years ago, how it would all happen – and it wasn’t easy.

soundtracks

There were a number of us who worked on most (if not all) of the CDs: Mike Matessino and Neil Bulk worked on the audio, while Jeff Bond did the liner notes. A lot of the people at the labels and studios who contributed in one capacity or another are friends and colleagues I’ve known for ten or twenty years, so it’s really meaningful that we were able to do this all together.

Now that we’re almost done – there are some more Trek television albums that La-La Land wants to do – I am very glad that collectors have access to the music, that the studios got paid, nobody got ripped off, and nothing got released in anything but the correct form.

That last fact has resulted in a funny side effect: If you produce an album correctly (or video release, or any product), there is little feedback — because there’s nothing to complain about! “Great work!” isn’t very interesting or controversial, so most of the feedback you get is, “Great work on X, now when are you going to release Y?” Of course, now that we’re done with so many of the albums, even that feedback is dwindling!

spiner_singing

TrekCore: The inclusion of Brent Spiner’s rendition of “Blue Skies” on this set has generated a lot of fan interest. Which new tracks have you most excited?

Lukas Kendall: I think the longer version of “End Title” is what people have most been wanting. An oddity of this score is that we had virtually every track twice: a “live” mix made at the time of the orchestral recording, mostly used for the original soundtrack album, and a remix, which was mostly (if not entirely) used in the film. Mike Matessino identified all of the takes used in the film to make the collector’s edition a companion to the original soundtrack album, just like we did for Insurrection.

TrekCore: Let’s reflect back on all ten expanded Trek film soundtracks. Which ones stand out as the most impressive to you?

Lukas Kendall: My favorite continues to be The Wrath of Khan. It’s not just my favorite film and score, but it was the first expanded CD we did of the Star Trek movies. The most ambitious one we did, though, was Star Trek: The Motion Picture, because Bruce Botnick did a new mix of the complete score from the 16-track multitrack masters. That score is a masterpiece. That 3-CD set was a mammoth undertaking in every way, from the licensing to the mixing to the liner notes. La-La Land really invested a lot of money into that, just like they did with the TOS box set.

st09_soundtrack

TrekCore: What about the Michael Giacchino’s soundtracks for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek movies? Do you have any involvement – or interest – in the music from those films?

Lukas Kendall: My relationship to the new films and scores is solely as a fan. Like many fans, there are times when I’m excited to see the franchise reinterpreted with such vigor and spectacle, and other times when I feel like it has nothing to do with the Star Trek I know and love.

I used to read comic books, and at some point, maybe I was 16 or 17, not only did the stories start to repeat, but the art changed into something unrecognizable. It was all drawn differently, and not necessarily for the better. That’s how I feel about the new Trek movies – and movies and soundtracks today in general – it’s necessarily “better” or “worse,” but it’s all drawn differently; I just don’t have the same emotional connection to it.

But we’ll always have Paris… and Ron Jones’ score to “We’ll Always Have Paris.”

REVIEW: “Star Trek: The Fall — The Crimson Shadow”

Star Trek: The Fall
The Crimson Shadow
By Una McCormack
Release Date: September 24, 2013
Pocket Books

From the back cover:

Cardassia Prime is home to a prideful people who, for centuries, forged alliances with those they believed would strengthen them and their place in the Alpha Quadrant, and expanded their empire at great cost to other worlds.

For generations, dissenting voices were silenced either by fear or an early grave. When their wartime ally, the Dominion, suddenly turned on them, seeking to transform Cardassia into a tomb for every last member of their race, their old adversary—the United Federation of Planets—put an end to the carnage, and even now works to help rebuild Cardassia Prime.

To celebrate this alliance, the Castellan of the Cardassian Union is to welcome the Federation president to Cardassia Prime. As a symbol of this deepening friendship, the U.S.S. Enterprise-E is tasked to carry the Cardassian ambassador to the Federation back home. For his part, Ambassador Elim Garak is working with Captain Jean-Luc Picard to oversee the diplomatic reception that will commemorate the last of Starfleet’s personnel finally leaving the homeworld.

However, there are malevolent forces at work, who even now strive to “restore Cardassia to its proper place and glory,” and are willing to do anything to achieve their goal…

My thoughts:

The Crimson Shadow is the second book in The Fall, a five-book series featuring crossovers between the current series in the 24th-century post-Nemesis continuity. Taking place over a sixty-day period, The Fall deals with a rather shocking attack against the Federation through the eyes of various players in the current continuity. Written by Una McCormack, The Crimson Shadow is primarily set on Cardassia and deals with the effects of The Fall on current Cardassian politics and the former empire’s relationship with the Federation.

cardassiaPerhaps the cover should have reflected the Cardassian focus of the novel.

I have written reviews of a number of Una McCormack’s earlier Trek works. Those who have read those reviews will know that I think very highly of her work. Hollow Men was a terrific novel, and The Never-Ending Sacrifice will always be a high point of Star Trek fiction for me. So, how does The Crimson Shadow stack up?

Quite frankly, it blows them out of the water.

Author Una McCormack proves herself extremely adept at creating a vivid landscape and tone in the reader’s mind. The Crimson Shadow adopts a noir tone at times, alternating between advancing the plot in surprising ways and becoming a lovely, introspective character piece. The Crimson Shadow is very different from the typical Star Trek novel. While the Enterprise is on the cover, The Crimson Shadow is very much a story about Cardassia at large, and Garak in particular.

The other characters that populate the novel’s pages are extremely dynamic and well-thought-out. Much like Neta Efheny in McCormack’s earlier book Brinkmanship, one of the primary characters in this novel is someone we’ve never seen before: Ista Nemeny, a member of the Cardassian constabulary who is assigned to investigate the murder of a Bajoran Starfleet officer in Cardassia’s capital city. Through the eyes of this investigator, we see Cardassian society like never before.

I make no secret of the fact that Garak is one of my all-time favorite Star Trek characters. From his initial introduction in DS9’s first season, I have always been fascinated by the character and wholly impressed with Andrew Robinson’s portrayal. Una McCormack is able to channel Robinson’s performance in her writing for a pitch-perfect representation of the spy-turned-tailor-turned-ambassador.

garakGarak takes on a significant role in “The Crimson Shadow.”

Garak is one of the most complex characters ever created in Star Trek, something that Deep Space Nine excelled at. His complexity can be witnessed through his interactions with other characters in the novel. For example, his literary comparisons with Captain Picard were a highlight, as were his letters to Dr. Bashir. In particular, I enjoyed seeing his relationship with Dr. Parmak, who watchers of the television series may recall was mentioned as a victim of Garak’s interrogation techniques in the episode “The Die is Cast.”

In many ways, The Crimson Shadow can be seen as a companion piece to Andrew Robinson’s own novel A Stitch in Time. Readers wishing to get more out of The Crimson Shadow would be well-served to also read that particular book.

After a somewhat ponderous (if still enjoyable) beginning to The Fall in the previous book, Revelation and DustThe Crimson Shadow shifts gears by giving us less “setup” and more actual plot. It feels as though Revelation and Dust could not stand on its own, and rather needs the rest of The Fall (or perhaps further books set on Deep Space Nine) in order to feel complete. Not so with The Crimson Shadow. While I certainly wouldn’t suggest reading this novel without the rest of the series for context, it could be done and still feel satisfactory.

Final thoughts:

Vivid characterizations and amazing prose make The Crimson Shadow rise to the very top of great Star Trek fiction, and proves that tie-in fiction is not just “junk” literature. I would put this book toe-to-toe with nearly any modern novel in terms of complexity, entertainment value, and meaning. I enjoyed every single moment of reading this book, even when, at one point, I was tempted to throw it across the room; readers will know which part I mean!

Beautifully written, and featuring the continuing story of one of my all-time favorite Trek characters, The Crimson Shadow currently sits at or near the top of my “best of Trek” list. Well done, Una McCormack; you’ve earned a life-long fan.
