TNG Remastered – ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ Comparison Video & Analysis

CBS have released a new video showcasing the differences between the SD and remastered HD versions of Star Trek: The Next Generation’s pilot episode, “Encounter at Farpoint”. The video was released through EW.com and is mirrored here on TrekCore’s YouTube account for you to stream below. Unfortunately, the video was released in poor 320p quality, so whilst you can’t get an appreciation for the HD quality, you can clearly see the differences in colour timing which are quite remarkable!

TNG ‘The Next Level’ Sampler Disc – Bonus Features

Paramount Home Entertainment’s German website has revealed the bonus features which are due to be included in the sampler disc “Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Next Level”, being released at the end of this month:

  • TNG Season 1 Blu-Ray Trailer

This differs from the bonus features described for the Region A North American release described on Amazon.com:

It’s not clear whether these are regional differences (the German listing would appear to be describing a Region B European release) or whether one of the websites is inaccurate. However, from the information that’s been released, it’s apparent that the sampler disc won’t be containing any behind-the-scenes documentaries regarding the remastering process or unseen deleted scenes or gag-reels. Hopefully CBS/Paramount will include a wider range of special features with the Season 1 Blu-Ray release later this year.

UPDATE: January 11 – We have now received clarification on the bonus features included on the sampler disc. The Amazon.com listing is – for the most part – correct. Here are the bonus features as described on the disc itself:

The Season One Blu-Ray Trailer will be the only new feature included on the disc, promoting the 2012 release of the complete first season on Blu-Ray. We are advised that the third feature is actually the first promo released by CBS at StarTrek.com on Sep 28 without the live action footage. Please note that these features are only confirmed for the North American Region A release. At present, the only feature confirmed for Region B (Europe, Australasia) is the new Season One Trailer.

Drexler, Curry & Takemura On-Board the TNG-R Team

Doug Drexler (Make-up Artist & Visual Effects Artist, TNG) has announced on his blog the DrexFiles that he will be working on the Star Trek: The Next Generation remastered project alongside Dan Curry (Visual Effects Supervisor, TNG), David Takemura (Visual Effects Artist, TNG) and Michael & Denise Okuda. In his blog, Drexler announces the commitment of the project to remain “100% true to the original.”

You heard right, this time around Paramount is bringing in a team that lived TNG as it happened. Dan, as I’m sure you know, was the visual effects supervisor on Next Gen. Unlike the remastering of TOS, this job will be 100% true to the original. Visual effects shots will not be reinvented, pulling you out of the show. What’s about to happen is truly extraordinary. The studio has saved all the original footage, and VFX elements from the good old days.. We will be recompositing them, and then outputting them in high definition. Here and there, elements have been lost, and we will recreate only those missing pieces, and with this promise: aside from looking like you had your windshield cleaned, you won’t know the difference. Star Trek: The Next Generation is Gene Roddenberry’s legacy, it is culturally significant, and we will rejuvenate the show with curatorial eyes only. Paramount Picture deserves a round of applause, and I can’t wait to dig in with my friends.

It’s very exciting news to hear that the original team is being taken on my CBS/Paramount for the project. It seems as though CBS is going out of its’ way to ensure that this project remains as true and authentic to the original show as possible, and hiring these guys to work on it is testament to that. Drexler’s assurances that fans ‘won’t notice the difference’ should allay a lot of peoples’ fears that the project is trying to “reinvent” the show, and at the same time disappoint those people who wanted a complete reboot in the style of TOS-R. Personally, I’m very happy to hear that so much care and attention is being invested into ensuring the end product is faithful to the original show we all know and love so much.

Exclusive SD/HD Analysis FeatureTo better appreciate how groundbreaking the remastering project is for TNG, we have produced a new feature comparing shot-by-shot the original standard definition release and the new high definition footage as seen in the trailer.

The improved color timing, contrast and clarity in these images is astounding! When you compare them to the original SD versions we were presented with on the DVDs and that have aired on television, the difference in quality is shocking.

TNG-R – ‘Sins of the Father’ Missing Film

CBS/Paramount today revealed that they have been unable to locate a particular section of the original film elements to the episode ‘Sins of the Father’ which is due to be included on the Blu-Ray sampler disc, released on Jan 31 2012. In a document sent to retailers today, the studio states that:

“Sins of the Father” – 13 seconds of the original film elements for this episode have not been located and thus have been upconverted from Standard Definition videotape.

Fortunately this is only a very small part of the episode, however it does raise the alarming possibility that there may well be other sections of film missing from episodes in this project and as a result, certain scenes can only be presented in their SD format, upconverted to HD.

The original press release can be found over at TVShowsonDVD.com

Missing HD film from 'Sins of the Father'Update: Our sources have now confirmed which scene in affected. It takes place at around 30:29 in the episode and lasts for approximately 13 seconds. The scene shows Dr. Crusher exiting the turbolift on the bridge and giving Riker the information about a second witness to the Khitomer massacre. The scene ends as we cut to a view of a bridge terminal station.

We’ve been assured that the scene itself fits pretty well into the episode and doesn’t appear jarring to the viewer. Obviously, if you look carefully you can certainly tell that it is an upconvert, but it doesn’t spoil the flow of the episode.

We have been advised that a disclaimer will be present on the disc itself mentioning exactly where the scene is. There is a possibility that the footage has simply been mis-labeled and is stored in a box that hasn’t yet been checked, so there is still a hope that the footage will be located at some point (hopefully before the 3rd season set is released). You can watch the scene below in full.

Finally, it should be noted that Paramount kept incredibly detailed logs and archives of the original film footage, so for the most part problems like this should be rare. However, the remastering team always expected that there would be a ‘few missing pieces’. Hopefully that number will be small. We’ll continue to keep you up-to-date with any further complications in the transfer process.

TNG Remastered Trailer Analysis and Comparison Screenshots

Wow! Talk about a sneak preview! The CBS trailer for Star Trek TNG’s HD Remastering certainly whetts the appetite for the project and gives away a few nice hints about what we should expect from TNG in high def. Interestingly, the two scenes which are presented in the trailer are given in different aspect ratios. The live-action shot of Picard at the end of the TNG pilot, ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ is shown in the original 4:3 fullscreen whereas the visual effect of the Enterprise entering warp, familiar to fans from the opening title sequence, is shown in 16:9 widescreen. This issue has since been clarified by The Digital Bits and TrekMovie who confirm through a statement from Mike Okuda that the presentation will be in the original 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio – a relief for purists!

Now for some analysis… It’s somewhat difficult to get a handle on quality differences in the live action shot from ‘Farpoint’ as the trailer has incorporated this shot into their own little CGI sequence, however we were able to pull a frame off and do some comparison with the standard def version from the DVDs:

Comparison

The first thing that stands out is the huge difference in color palette. The HD cap is a far more balanced image, with better blacks and an all-round nicer contrast, especially on the red striping on Picard’s uniform. The increase in quality is best seen in the comparison – look at fine details such as Picard’s eyes and the stripe on Picard’s uniform (especially the left side) to see how detail is far sharper in HD.

The most shocking difference comes in the visual effects shot of the Enterprise jumping into warp as you can see in the images below:

The difference in clarity, detail and color balance is striking, and I must say I’m amazed at how good this shot looks. If this is any indication of how TNG is going to look remastered in HD, I’d say the fans are in for a wonderful surprise! Here’s some more HD goodness of the Enterprise’s warp-out effect shown in the trailer:

TNG Remastered on Blu-Ray – First News

Rumors of a possible high-definition transfer for Star Trek: The Next Generation have been rife on the internet ever since the Original Series was remastered in 2006. That project saw all 80 classic episodes brought firmly into the 21st century with all new special effects and a stunning remastering of the original film.

Star Trek fans have been asking if the same treatment will be given to The Next Generation, and recent rumblings from CBS Paramount confirm that Captain Picard and crew are about to join the original crew in glorious high-definition.

The Digital Bits site reported back in July that sources at Comic Con had confirmed CBS were working on a high-definition transfer for The Next Generation and that 4 ‘test episodes’ were being worked on with the aim of releasing a ‘sampler blu ray’ sometime in 2011.LeVar Burton

On September 2, LeVar BurtonTNG‘s Lt. Cmdr. Geordi La Forge, tweeted that he had stopped by CBS Paramount Television City to ‘see how the TNG conversion to HD for Blue Ray was coming along…’and followed up his tweet with the hashtag #mindblown.

Now, the Digital Bits has confirmed through sources at CBS Paramount which episodes will be featured on the blu-ray sampler disc:
‘The disc will include FOUR episodes, two of which will include Encounter at Farpoint, Parts 1 and 2. We’re told that the other two should be The Inner Light and Sins of the Father…’

These episodes would certainly provide a diverse cross-section from the show. Unlike the Original Series, episodes of TNG were all edited on video making a high-definition transfer impossible without going back to the original film and creating new special effects.

The Enterprise draws level with the spaceborne lifeforms from the pilot, 'Encounter at Farpoint'The four sample episodes are all quite different in terms of their special-effects content and presentation style. The pilot, ‘Encounter at Farpoint‘ would seem to present the biggest challenge for the remastering team. The episode is special-effects heavy, featuring such memorable scenes as the first saucer-separation, Q’s energy ‘net’ and the spaceborne lifeforms at the end of the pilot. Watching this episode on DVD, I have always been struck by the poor quality of the transfer. The picture is incredibly soft, colours are poorly displayed and washed out and there is very little detail visible in the presentation. The transfer to HD for the pilot should represent a huge jump in terms of quality and perhaps be the most noticeable out of the four chosen episodes.

The Klingon hall from 'Sins of the Father'Sins of the Father‘ is, from a cinematography standpoint, very murky and dark in it’s presentation – a key hallmark for most Klingon episodes. Hopefully a high-definition transfer will bring out much of the detail which is lost in the standard definition release. Whilst not special-effects heavy, ‘Sins of the Father’ does feature some iconic matte paintings of Qo’noS. It will be interesting to see how this ‘regular’ episode is remastered and whether or not similar techniques are used that were employed in the remastering of some of classic Star Trek’s famous matte paintings.

Picard gazes out at the Kataan probe in 'The Inner Light'The final episode, ‘The Inner Light‘ is arguably the most popular of the four. A long-term fan favourite, this episode is constantly seen in top-10 polls for the show. Again, this fifth-season episode isn’t especially special-effects heavy, however it does feature a few notable shots involving the Kataan-probe. The cinematography in this episode is also quite unique. Much of the episode’s plot takes part on the planet surface and is filmed in a ‘washed out’ style to depict the growing presence of the supernova. The difference between standard and high definition will probably be far less notable with this episode than the previous three.

You can remind yourself how the episodes look at the moment in our extensive collection of screencaps from the DVD releases of the show. Check out screencaps from the sampler-disc episodes with these links:

The Digital Bits reported in its September 12 bulletin that the sampler blu ray is set to be officially announced on September 28, TNG’s 24th anniversary. The anticipated U.S. release date will apparently be around December 6.

TNG Blu-Ray Sampler Artwork 1TNG Blu-Ray Sampler Artwork 2Update (Sep 26): The German portal for Amazon, Amazon.de has released cover artwork for the TNG sampler blu ray. The artwork describes the disc as ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Next Level, A Taste of TNG in High Definition’. Click the thumbnails to view the images in high resolution detail. Hopefully these are only provisional versions of the artwork as the image of the Enterprise-D seems to be back-to-front here (check the registration number!). Further update – these were indeed provisional shots, the packaging has now been updated and the Enterprise has been reversed to the correct angle! Corrected packaging is shown.

Only two days now until the expected announcement from CBS Home Entertainment on the details of the sampler disc – stay tuned to TrekCore for all the latest news as we get it!

Update (Sep 27): The Digital Bits reports that an official preview trailer for the sampler disc may appear online tomorrow. Hopefully we’ll soon have confirmation of the TNG remastered project from CBS!
