Inside the New TREK 50 Blu-ray Box Set with Roger Lay, Jr.

As you saw in our review from a few weeks ago, the new Star Trek 50th Anniversary Blu-ray collection is a hearty box set – a beautiful gold and black package containing not just the full run of Original Series cast adventures from television and film, but some wonderful collectibles as well.

The most substantial new part of the collection is the exclusive bonus disc contained inside, The Journey to the Silver Screen, a long series of new interviews with behind-the-scenes talent covering the span of time from the classic show’s cancellation through the final film in 1991.

We last spoke to producer Roger Lay, Jr. – one of the lead forces behind the amazing bonus features on the Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray collections – back in 2013 as Enterprise was being released in high definition, in an illuminating five-part interview.

We caught up again with Roger earlier this month at the Star Trek: Mission New York convention to talk about his newest contribution to the Star Trek media library.

TREKCORE: So this big box – which by the way, is really a beautiful package – is the first time that the Original Series television episodes and movies have all been released in one set, right?

ROGER LAY: Yeah, I think so. And this is the fiftieth anniversary, so it’s the perfect time to offer fans the massive binge-watching package, you know? To put everything related to the Original Series – and the Animated Series, for the first time – in one Blu-ray collection.

TREKCORE: It’s really great that the Animated Series has finally gotten a high-definition release on disc. It’s always been kind of overlooked – it was the last of the DVD releases…

LAY: …and as I said in our panel, I feel that it’s part of the canon. You know, Gene was there supervising everything, Dorothy Fontana and David Gerrold and Sam Peeples wrote for that show. “Yesteryear,” especially, is canon in my book!

TREKCORE: Well, they pulled from TAS for not just the Original Series remastering updates, but the Enterprise writers included some of that stuff too.

LAY: Absolutely! You see a sehlat in “The Forge” – what more connective tissue do you need than that?

shikahr
The city of ShiKahr (“Yesteryear”) is featured in the remastering of “Amok Time.”

TREKCORE: Well, speaking of the Animated Series – there aren’t any new features on this set. Everything from the DVDs is ported over, including the text commentaries which have sometimes been left behind, but why wasn’t there any new material created for this TAS release?

LAY: Well, the team felt that the stuff that was created for the Animated Series DVDs was great, and that it covered the series well already – and we really wanted to focus on the films our new set of interviews on the bonus disc.

With The Roddenberry Vault coming in December, we’re telling the story of the original show – so with this, we wanted to focus on everything that happened once the television show was cancelled. The bonus disc – called Star Trek: The Journey to the Silver Screen – picks up the moment the Original Series ended.

You hear from Bjo and John Trimble, Dorothy Fontana, David Gerrold, John Black… with all the people who were there when the show was in production, we also get to explore how everything came to an end. They guide you through what happened next, with all the fan efforts to resurrect Star Trek.

Devra Langsam, who was part of the committee who organized the first Star Trek convention – she’s in that piece, talking about putting that first convention together and how it inspired the studio to possibly do more Star Trek.

langsam
Trek convention organizer Devra Langsam discusses the first event in New York.

Then we go into the whole back-and-forth about if the show is coming back to television, or becoming a movie, and all the concepts that never made it to screen. We explore all of that in The New Frontier: Resurrecting Star Trek, before we even go into the making of The Motion Picture.

Then there’s an entire piece just on The Wrath of Khan – since it’s such a significant movie – and then a whole piece on the Harve Bennett era, which explores a lot of Harve’s ideas that didn’t make it to the films, like Prison Planet, the early Star Trek III script that were very different from the final movie, and then Star Trek IV with the whole Eddie Murphy thing.

There’s a great archival interview I found with Harve Bennett where he guides you through the storyline for his Academy Years movie, along with a new interview with David Loughery who also takes you through that story. So between Harve and David, plus Ralph Winter – who first came up with the thought of keeping the film series going with a new cast in case they didn’t get the original actors back for the next movie, as it was so difficult to get them for Star Trek V.

TREKCORE: It’s definitely not the same “making of” style of interviews that were on the original movie discs.

LAY: Well, I felt that no one had really covered the film era from this perspective – the idea that for every Star Trek film that was made, there were two or three that didn’t make it. And again, with everything I do, I like to provide context and a chronological narrative for everything.

harve
Producer Harve Bennett appears by way of archival interview footage.

So even though I’m exploring the movies that didn’t happen, we’re also showing you what DID happen. We shot a ton of new interviews with people like Ralph Winter, who was really responsible for all those movies along with Harve; he started as a studio executive on The Wrath of Khan and then left Paramount to work on the movies directly as a producer.

Kirk Thatcher, too, who was Leonard Nimoy’s assistant, who did VFX stuff at ILM for Star Trek III, and then by Star Trek IV he had become an associate producer. So I interviewed everyone that was still around.

And by the way, the research to find all the script pages, and outlines, and the other documents we include took a long time to do, but we wanted to make sure that it was definitive as it could be.

TREKCORE: It’s almost two-and-a-half hours – certainly longer than we expected!

LAY: It wasn’t easy. Everything you see in there – from the filming of the interviews, to the editing process, finding all the images, animating things like the Ralph McQuarry concept art – was done in four months, and it was a lot of work, and I hope fans will get to see it because there’s so much great information in there.

titans
Ralph McQuarrie’s artwork from “Planet of the Titans” appears in a slightly-animated form.

TREKCORE: And you’re kind of a completionist when it comes to this stuff, right? Because many people have bought this stuff separately already…

LAY: Well, if you go to a Broadway show, you know, you buy the souvenir program – and this is kind of the ‘souvenir set’ for the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek, because everything is in there, the packaging is beautiful, and you get those art cards, the cool pin, and the Journey to the Silver Screen bonus disc.

If you’re a completionist like me – and I know that not everyone is as an insane fan as I am – you want to have a souvenir of everything important to you, and this box is that for Trek, celebrating every aspect of the original cast.

TREKCORE: Well, we have one last question for you – the one we’re always asked – what’s the status of Deep Space Nine and Voyager?

LAY: Everyone wants to do it – there’s not a person involved in these projects that doesn’t want to jump in on Deep Space Nine. We talk about it all the time, but there has to be a market supporting the expense. The reality is that it’s a business, and it’s getting more and more expensive to do these things.

What I always say is that the best way to show support is to buy the Blu-rays we’ve put out. I know it’s expensive sometimes, but then I go, “Well, why would someone want us to put out DS9 on Blu-ray if they’re not even buying the other things we’ve produced?” It’s a kind of a Catch-22.

It’s not like people have forgotten about it; Deep Space Nine comes up all the time. Is there something fans can do? Yes. If you show support for all of the content – and remember, CBS hasn’t just been putting out the episodes barebones on Blu-ray, they’ve spent a great deal of time and money to give fans the definitive experience of Next Generation and Enterprise with tons of newly-produced content for each collection.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR7oewdXp7w

We love DS9, but it’s expensive, and it takes time, and these things have to generate a return – and I’m sure CBS would love to get to a point where the entire Star Trek episodic library is available in glorious HD, but it’s all dictated by the marketplace. So if fans keep showing their support by picking up the amazing content already available, that’s the first step.

DS9 is a dream project; it’s my favorite of the modern-era Trek shows. I know Mike and Denise Okuda really like that show, and they have great memories of the time they spent working on it – so it would be fantastic for them, too, to get to revisit it and get together with old friends for those special features.

But as our friend Mr. Spock said, “There are always possibilities.”

TREKCORE: So keep hope alive?

LAY: Absolutely, there’s no reason not to – but buy some Blu-rays, too!

First Details on STAR TREK BEYOND Blu-ray Features

We’re still awaiting Paramount’s official announcement on the release of STAR TREK BEYOND on home video, but today we have our first idea of the bonus features expected to accompany the newest Trek film, from the UK’s film rating commission.

Similar to the MPAA of the United States, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rates movies and home media releases for audiences in the UK, including ratings for the Value Added Material (VAM) – aka bonus features – that accompanies DVD and Blu-ray releases in that region.

While there’s no mention of any audio commentary track, the BBFC have rated two discs worth of VAM for the upcoming release. (Note: this list remains unconfirmed and subject to change until Paramount makes their official release announcement.)

The first disc of content clocks in at just over an hour, and includes about a minute of deleted scenes along with ten other features.

01:00 – DELETED SCENES
10:05 – BEYOND THE DARKNESS
04:28 – ENTERPRISE TAKEDOWN
08:13 – DIVIDED AND CONQUERED
05:12 – A WARPED SENSE OF REVENGE
03:03 – TREKKING IN THE DESERT
05:59 – EXPLORING STRANGE NEW WORLDS
08:01 – NEW LIFE AND NEW CIVILIZATIONS
07:48 – TO LIVE LONG AND PROSPER
05:01 – FOR LEONARD AND ANTON
05:10 – GAG REEL

The first disc’s content also looks to be included in the iTunes digital release of the film, which is previewed now on that streaming service’s BEYOND listing.

The iTunes listing also includes a synopsis of disc one’s features:

Step on board for an epic tour of STAR TREK BEYOND! Watch over an hour of behind-the-scenes featurettes with filmmaker and cast interviews, including Justin Lin, J.J. Abrams, Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto.

Go beyond the movie’s incredible edge-of-your-seat action and see how an unprecedented 50 new alien species were created, including STAR TREK’s newest villain Krall and the rebellious alien warrior Jaylah.

Explore the strange new world of planet Altamid and discover how Dubai became the inspriation for the Federation’s newest Starbase Yorktown.

Enjoy a hilarious gag reel as well as the deleted scenes you didn’t see in theaters, and much more!

The second disc is another fifty-four minutes of features, some of which are the film’s theatrical trailers along with Rihanna’s “Sledgehammer” music video. Interestingly, the “Sledgehammer” making-of featurette released back in July is not included.

08:05 – SMALL WORLD
05:11 – THE BATTLE OF YORKTOWN
03:29 – PROPERLY OUTFITTED
04:58 – SET PHASERS TO STUNNING
06:03 – SPLICED
09:14 – BEATS AND SHOUTING
08:07 – VISUALLY EFFECTIVE
03:55 – RIHANNA – SLEDGEHAMMER [MUSIC VIDEO]
01:25 – BEASTIE BOYS TRAILER (aka Trailer 1)
02:23 – TRADITIONAL SCORE TRAILER (aka Trailer 2)
01:53 – RIHANNA SLEDGEHAMMER TRAILER (aka Trailer 3)

While still unconfirmed, our speculation is that this second disc is going to be a retailer-exclusive release in the USA, likely at Target stores – as both Best Buy and Walmart have already listed their variants – and Target isn’t likely to go without a retail incentive for this film.

Should our speculation pan out, this will look much like many other home releases, with a bonus disc at one retailer, a Steelbook at another,  an accessory pack at another, and an online exclusive – while not ideal for collectors, it’s pretty standard fare these days in the United States.

Thankfully, since neither Best Buy or Walmart have bonus discs as part of their preorder listings, it looks like Paramount has learned from the crazy Star Trek Into Darkness debacle in 2013, when video content was split between several retailers (Best Buy, Target, iTunes, Xbox Video) and took until the Compendium edition re-issue to gather it all in one place.

For you packaging aficionados, though, you’ll still need to budget for separate purchases.

Once we have the official release information for STAR TREK BEYOND, we’ll be sure to keep you all posted – and  of course, we’ll be reviewing all the different bonus features for you here when available.

DISCOVERY Producers “Begged” CBS to Reschedule Show

We were surprised – but not shocked – to learn yesterday that STAR TREK: DISCOVERY has been pushed out to a May 2017 start date, after producers Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman decided they would not have enough time to produce a quality product by the planned January debut.

In a media conference today, CBS president Les Moonves touched a bit on the scheduling change for the upcoming Trek spin-off series.

We’ve delayed our ‘Star Trek’ [launch] ’til May. For those who think that’s something to be worried about, let me assure you: it’s not.

The producers came into my office last week and begged me – they said, “We are creating an entire universe; you know how fanatical ‘Star Trek’ fans are. We’re creating this universe, we need a couple more months to get the effects right, to get the world right. PLEASE let us have until May.”

With ‘Star Trek,’ which is the family jewels, I’d rather it be a few months late – and great – than than early, and not great. Because we will suffer for it.

So we made the decision to give them the time to make their perfect ‘Star Trek,’ which we are wildly anticipating. In addition, we have the ‘Good Wife’ spin-off, which was going to be ready earlier, so basically we just flipped their position [on] our calendar.

While there are some fans who have expressed concerns (and complaints) that this delay means only bad things for DISCOVERY, a great deal of reaction on social media appears to be some unsurprised relief that the show will have some more time to coalesce behind-the-scenes ahead of the public debut – and we’re inclined to agree.

In addition to the production team’s need for more time, CBS now has four additional months to roll out the “larger marketing push” that Moonves predicted back in March, as well as spread the CBS All Access streaming app to more platforms – such as Smart TVs and other devices which are missing the app from their services – before the May 2017 arrival of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY.

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Sets New Course for May 2017

Well, after almost a year of build-up to January’s launch of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY on CBS All Access, the broadcaster announced today that the new series will now be leaving spacedock next May – and that the previously-announced spinoff of The Good Wife will instead be the first original series on the streaming platform, next February.

The decision was made to push out DISCOVERY at the request of the production team headed by Bryan Fuller, the network detailed, in a joint statement by the showrunner and co-executive producer Alex Kurtzman.

“Bringing ‘Star Trek’ back to television carries a responsibility and mission: to connect fans and newcomers alike to the series that has fed our imaginations since childhood,” said executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller.

“We aim to dream big and deliver, and that means making sure the demands of physical and post-production for a show that takes place entirely in space, and the need to meet an air date, don’t result in compromised quality.

Before heading into production, we evaluated these realities with our partners at CBS and they agreed: ‘Star Trek’ deserves the very best, and these extra few months will help us achieve a vision we can all be proud of.”

In addition, CBS’s release included notes from CBS Television Studios president David Stapf and CBS Interactive president Marc DeBevoise regarding the schedule change.

David Stapf:

“The series template and episodic scripts that Alex and Bryan have delivered are incredibly vivid and compelling,” said David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios. “They are building a new, very ambitious ‘Star Trek’ world for television, and everyone involved supports their vision for the best timing to bring to life what we all love on the page.”

Marc DeBovoise:

“We have an amazing inaugural slate of originals for CBS All Access and world-class creative teams behind each of our shows,” said Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive. “This line-up and release schedule will ensure we deliver the highest quality, premium series that are sure to appeal to both existing subscribers and new audiences alike, throughout the year.”

Fans have been long-awaiting news on casting and other significant details on the upcoming Star Trek series, with only limited information on general character and setting detail has been released so far, and an early look at a design for the starship Discovery back in the summer – and many have wondered if broadcaster was cutting it a bit close on the production schedule to meet the impending January launch date.

What do you think about this news? Are you happy that the team will have more time to get the show put together before the first episodes air, or does this delay worry you?

REVIEW: “For the Love of Spock”

As we celebrate all things Star Trek, on this its 50th anniversary, 455 Films has released For the Love of Spock in theaters and on video-on-demand streaming services this weekend, a beautifully produced documentary which serves as a kind of love letter and final farewell to Leonard Nimoy from his son, Adam.

For the Love of Spock accomplishes one of those rare feats for a mainstream Star Trek documentary in that it is informative without being condescending to its core Star Trek fan base. Documentaries of this type often have a hard time finding a way to straddle the line between satisfying hardcore fans as well as the uninitiated. For the Love of Spock manages to do both exceptionally well.

Nimoy’s musical interludes also receive attention.

That said, if you’re expecting a dry, clinical rundown of Leonard Nimoy’s career in Star Trek with some behind-the-scenes dirt sprinkled in, prepare to be disappointed (or relieved, depending on your temperament). The key word in the film’s title here is “love” and the documentary is chiefly a tribute film serving to reveal, on a personal and – at times – emotional level, who the man was underneath the pointy ears and stoic demeanor.

Adam Nimoy produced the documentary with help from a crowd-funding campaign through Kickstarter, which helped to pay for the large amount of licensed video content in the feature, from Leonard’s Trek years (as well as other projects). The project began as a joint venture with his father, but after Leonard’s death last year, it took on a much larger scope and importance.

Adam was able to solicit the support of all principle actors from the original series for interviews, as well as those from the rebooted movies – plus many others in the entertainment industry and from Leonard’s life.

Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”) discusses Spock with Adam Nimoy.

There are a number of interesting takeaways from this film, especially if you’re not familiar with Leonard’s early years as a struggling actor in television. The birth of the pointy ears prosthetic, the Vulcan neck pinch, and the famous hand greeting are explained away, as you’d expect.

But these bits of trivia are almost incidental to the larger story being told: that of a man who passionately wanted to be an actor and who, after considerable sacrifice and subsequent success with Spock, found it hard to separate himself from that identity.

Because this is Adam’s story as much as it is Leonard’s, we also learn about Adam’s struggle finding his own career identity living in the shadow of his famous father. Adam did manage to carve out a career directing for television. In addition to NYPD Blue, Outer Limits, and Babylon 5, Adam directed two episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation – “Rascals” and “Timescape.”

Nimoy interviews Simon Pegg on the “Star Trek Beyond” set.

There are some glaring omissions that may upset fans eager to learn more about Leonard’s work on the original Star Trek feature films. While the film does spend some time on Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Leonard characterized the experience as “depressing”) and his path to feature film directing in the 1980’s with Star Trek III and Trek IV – as well as Three Men and a Baby – there’s no mention of any of the Star Trek movies after The Voyage Home, or his ground-breaking appearance on Star Trek: The Next Generation’s episode “Unification.”

We do pick up with his experience working on the 2009 Trek reboot film, with personal memories from Director JJ Abrams and members of the cast. J.J. Abrams, Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and Simon Pegg are among the Kelvin Timeline participants to discuss Nimoy in the interview segments.

nimoy-camera
Nimoy is remembered as a father, brother, actor, musician, and photographer.

For the Love of Spock is beautifully assembled, and the film’s coda, which takes place at Burning Man 2015, is captivating in its visual power. As a whole, For the Love of Spock doesn’t ignore the darker parts of Leonard’s life, but it doesn’t wallow in them at the expense of what truly defined Leonard Nimoy and his legacy, which is dignity, passion, and sacrifice.

For the Love of Spock can be viewed on many digital platforms, in theaters across the United States and Canada, and is available for preorder on Blu-ray and DVD at the film’s official website.
