Product Roundup: FanSets DS9 25th Pin, DISCOVERY Paintings, USS Franklin Model, New CCG Game and More!

We’re taking a break from our week of Toy Fair-centric coverage to talk about something else — more Star Trek product news! From Star Trek Beyond to a new Star Trek online game, there’s a bunch of new Trek stuff rolling out that you may just want to add to your own collection.

First up: FanSets’ Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 25th Anniversary pin was revealed today at StarTrek.com, based on the official series logo for the year. The pin is going up for preorder at FanSets.com soon at a $12.95 price point, with shipments planned for next month.

For fans of the Star Trek: Attack Wing game, we learned on-site at Toy Fair this weekend that publisher WizKids will be rolling out more ‘faction pack’ expansions later this year, including the first Star Trek Kelvin Timeline entry in the series.

Watch for more from Star Trek: Attack Wing in Spring 2018.

We first told you about Moebius Model’s USS Franklin 1/350-scale model kit back in August when it was on display at the annual Las Vegas convention, but now the finished kit is finally getting ready to ship.

The 15″ Star Trek Beyond model kit is up for preorder from a number of sources including Monsters in Motion for $49.99, and is expected to ship at the end of the month.

This month saw the launch of a new free-to-play online collectible card game, Star Trek Adversaries, for both PC and Mac users in an Early Access beta testing phase from developer Puppet Master Games.

Using a roster of all manner of characters from across the Star Trek prime timeline — from the Original Series all the way through Discovery, the Adversaries CCG lets you build a deck of power players and challenge your opponents in single-player or multiplayer tournaments.

Finally, art retailer Bye Bye Robot has revealed a series of limited-edition Star Trek: Discovery paintings to commemorate the first season of the show

The seven unique designs range from renditions of Michael Burnham, the USS Discovery and USS Shenzhou on patrol, and theatrical-style posters featuring the cast of the series.

We’re hope you’re not exhausted from our whirlwind coverage of Trek merchandise this week, because there’s still more to come, on the latest ways to expand your personal fleet from Eaglemoss’ Official Starships Collection and Star Trek Online!

ToyFair 2018: New Line of STAR TREK Bags from The Coop

We’re back with more Toy Fair coverage from our excursion to New York City this past weekend, checking out a new series of Star Trek bags and totes from The Coop, a licensee who has been producing specialty Trek notebooks, bags, and other specialty items for the last few years.

The Coops’ licensing director John Frazier told us that he personally wanted a Trek bag large enough to hold a gaming laptop, so he prioritized a larger-dimension offering with this Next Generation “PADD” messenger bag — complete with Enterprise-D LCARS theming on both the glossy exterior panels to the interior pattern.

The PADD messenger bag measures 21″ x 15″ and retails for $41 on Amazon, large enough to comfortably hold a 15″ laptop with room to spare. It also has a matching ladies wallet and mens wallet in the LCARS theme if that’s your style.

There’s also this groovy, retro Uhura tote bag, with artwork first seen on a notebook released by The Coop last summer. This handled bag is a bit smaller, measuring in at 19″ x 15″, and is Original Series branded in 70’s-era browns and oranges.

The Uhura bag landed in December for $55, and also has a matching wallet in the same artwork.

Previewed at Toy Fair but not yet available for sale is a matching Spock-themed tote bag, due out in the coming weeks and measuring the same 19″ x 15″ dimensions. Like the other bags, it too has a pair of matching wallets in the retro blue-grey design.

Along with their new line of Trek bags, The Coop also had on display some of the notebook designs and pet products they’ve had in the market for the past several months.

Frazier told us that the company recently locked up the licenses for all of the prime timeline Star Trek shows and films — including the rarely-merchandised Animated Series — so we’re likely to see more of these stylized Trek products in the future.

Who else would feature Riker playing Anbo-jytsu on a notebook?

STAR TREK: DISCOVERY’s Canon Connections: Episode 115

You know, when I wrote this column for the two previous episodes, I was worried that with only one episode to go there wouldn’t be enough references to previous Star Trek canon to warrant an additional article this week. Wow, was I wrong about that!

I think in the course of this one episode we had the most Easter eggs and canon references of any previous episode of Discovery, and that is before we even get to that final scene — so let’s dig into “Will You Take My Hand?” to wrap our Canon Connections series for the season!

Earth Orbit

For the first time in Star Trek, we see the busy Earth orbit that has been referenced in numerous shows — filled with starships and space stations — rather than just one ship or station at a time. Among all the activity, we can clearly see Spacedock, the famous mushroom-shaped station that first appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, under construction.

In addition, we can see settlements on the Moon, which makes sense because by the time of Star Trek: First Contact, we know that Luna carries a population of 50 million people.

“Call it Qo’noS — or the enemy planet.”

Qo’noS is depicted the same as other appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the Star Trek: Enterprise pilot “Broken Bow” as a vibrant green world.

In addition, we see a moon in orbit around the planet, which is likely Praxis, the moon that would explode and precipitate the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Optical Data Network

Saru asks Burnham to help him identify a glitch in the Optical Data Network as a ruse to express his outrage to her about Emperor Georgiou taking command of the ship. The Optical Data Network is the data transfer system aboard starships, referenced numerous times in the Star Trek canon.

Molor

According to Tyler, the chimney through which Discovery attempts to access the dormant volcano system under the surface of Qo’noS were previously the sight of a shrine to Molor. Molor was an ancient Klingon ruler who was defeated by Kahless, first described by Worf in TNG’s “Rightful Heir.”

Captain Killy’s Exploits

Georgiou fondly recalls her previous exploits with the Mirror version of Cadet Sylvia Tilly, the aptly-named Captain Killy.

These exploits include the subjugation of the Betazoids, the race of telepaths that count Deanna and Lwaxana Troi among their number, and wiping out Mintaka III, a planet of proto-Vulcans visited by the Enterprise-D in the Prime Universe in The Next Generation episode “Who Watches The Watchers?”

Redundant Organs

The sturdiness of the Klingon body is attributable to the brak’lul, a Klingon term for the fact that the vital organs are equipped with redundancies, such as two stomachs. The phenomenon was discussed in The Next Generation episode “Ethics.”

Apparently, the brak’lul extends to Klingon genitals as well…

Ceti Eels

In the Orion market that Burnham, Georgiou, and Tilly beam to on Qo’noS, there are a number of exotic foods being prepared, including two eels from Ceti Alpha V.

The eels, whose larvae can induce a form of mind control, would later be used by Khan Noonien Singh to take control of the USS Reliant in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

Orions

The Orions run an embassy and trading post at the location where the Discovery crew plan to drop the mapping drone. The appearance of the Orions features the classic depiction of an Orion slave girl (and boy!) and nefarious activities by various members of the species.

Special shout out to guest star Clint Howard, who makes a welcome return to the franchise in this episode. Howard appeared as Balok in The Original Series episode “The Corbomite Maneuver” and had two guest-starring roles across Deep Space Nine and Enterprise.

Nausicaan Pistols

Straight from Lorca’s menagerie, Georgiou offers to sell the Orions a pair of Nausicaan pistols. The Nausicaans were an aggressive race who appeared several times in The Next Generation. Most famously, Picard was impaled through the heart as a young ensign in a bar brawl with a Nausicaan, as depicted in the episode “Tapestry.”

Darseks

Georgiou sells the Nausicaan pistols for two thousand darseks, the unit of Klingon currency established in The Next Generation episode “First Born.”

Klingon Games

Tyler remembers that Voq is good at a game that a group of Klingons are playing at the Orion trading market, and uses it as a way to encourage them to give him information about how to access the shrine to Molor.

While the game itself has not appeared before in the Star Trek canon, the Klingons brawl and become aggressive with each other in between moves, much like depictions of previous Klingon carousing, such as during The Next Generation episode “Redemption, Part II.”

Trill

At the Orion tattoo parlor, we see a Trill receiving an animated tattoo. It would work with the timeline for this Trill to be Emony Dax, one of the previous hosts of the symbiont that would eventually be joined with Jadzia and Ezri.

We know that she was traveling through space during this period, having had a relationship with Dr. McCoy on Earth while he was at medical school.

Paris

After the Klingon fleet pulls away, we push back in on Earth through orbit and down to the surface, specifically to Paris, France. We see Burnham and Amanda speaking, and then Sarek arrives to tell her the good news that her record has been expunged and her rank restored.

Paris is the location of the Office of the Federation President – who grants Burnham her pardon. We also a maglev train running across the Paris skyline, the same as during a previous appearance of the city during the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Homefront.”

United Earth

Just after Burnham and Sarek’s conversation, while Burnham reflects on their discussion and her voiceover begins, we see the United Earth symbol behind her.

This symbol first appeared on Enterprise, and shows a globe with one laurel wreath on its left side, an obvious precursor to the logo of the United Federation of Planets.

Starfleet Uniforms

During Burnham’s speech before Starfleet Command, we see officers wearing both the Discovery uniforms we have become familiar with, but in several out of focus shots we also see officers wearing other uniforms. While generally out of focus in the episode, the coloring of these uniforms look much more similar to those worn by the crew of the USS Enterprise in the original pilot episode “The Cage.”

In addition, the medals that a number of officers, including Admiral Cornwell, wear have the familiar triangular shape of uniform medals that appeared in The Original Series.

Of course, there’s no bigger connection to Star Trek canon than the appearance of Captain Pike’s USS Enterprise, debuting in this episode sporting its 2018 new look, which takes several design elements from both before and after the 2250’s, including bits of Enterprise NX-01 and the refit Enterprise NCC-1701 from The Motion Picture — while adapting the Jefferies design to the Discovery era.

That’s a wrap on our Star Trek: Discovery Canon Connections series for this season — but we’ll surely be seeing more as we return to Discovery for Season 2!

Toy Fair 2018: McFarlane Toys’ Kirk and Picard Figures; Update on STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Phaser Prototype

We’ve gotten some rest but are back today with even more coverage from Toy Fair 2018 here in New York City with a look at the most anticipated new licensee of the year, McFarlane Toys.

Debuting at last summer’s Las Vegas Star Trek convention, owner Todd McFarlane and McFarlane Toys brand managers Jeremy Sodek and Evin Dempsey held panels at STLV to discuss upcoming plans for their new Trek license, including a series of seven-inch character figures from the Original Series and The Next Generation, along with kicking off a wave of Star Trek: Discovery products to include figures of Michael Burnham and T’Kuvma, and their take on a Discovery phaser toy.

We caught up with Sodek and Dempsey once more this weekend at Toy Fair, where the company showed off their nearly-finalized first releases for the year. First up is the 7″ Captain Kirk and Captain Picard figures, each with a series of hands and accessories to complete the set.

Slotted for release sometime around mid-April, the 7″ figures will retail at a $19.99 price point. There was no sign yet of the previously-announced Burnham or T’Kuvma figures, but Sodek told us that their designs are still being worked through licensing and likeness approvals.

With T’Kuvma’s surprising death in the Star Trek: Discovery series opener having “thrown us for a loop,” says Sodek, the company is working to make sure that Burnham will have some character to “partner with Burnham when she comes out [for sale].”

The highlight of our visit was a close-up look at the early-stage Discovery phaser prototype, which was released from manufacturing as a test build just in the last few days in time for Toy Fair. While it’s not painted or colored, it does have working electronics and lighting (as we feature in the video above).

Some of the planned functionality of McFarlane’s DISCOVERY phaser.

Unlike the ANOVOS phaser prop replica — which was intended to recreate the filming prop as a display piece using exacting processes and materials — the McFarlane phaser will be an injection-molded recreation with sound effects and additional lighting components.

The Type I phaser has its own sound and lighting built-in, which in turn activates the lighting on the Type II grip when docked in the handle. When completed, the spring-load battery pack in the grip will also have its own lighting to detail power levels in the toy.

Also featured on display was a mock-up of the planned phaser packaging, including a stand-in ‘exploded’ phaser insert illustrating the separable nature of the toy.

The McFarlane Discovery phaser will be set under $40.00 when it hits stores later this year, and from the feedback we’ve seen online and on social media, it’s sure to find its place into many fans’ collections.

McFarlane isn’t announcing any additional new Trek products past this trio right now, but Sodek did tell us that since they have the license to all non-Kelvin Timeline Trek series and films, they may look towards some of the other chapters of the franchise for their next ideas.

*   *   *

These new Star Trek products are also set to arrive in the new 2018 packaging theme we mentioned in our earlier Toy Fair reports from Round2 and Gentle Giant Toys, with colored banners and lead character imagery accompanying the sleek modern designs — Kirk/gold for TOS, Picard/red for TNG, Sisko/grey for DS9, and Discovery with Burnham/burnt orange. (No sign of Voyager or Enterprise editions yet.)

The Eaglemoss USS Shenzhou model being the first new box style to hit consumers (albeit in a special ‘dark’ version of the design), and additional early-issue Official Starships Collection re-releases to follow in similarly-themed dark styles.

We expect that new Trek products will be transitioning over to the new design style in the coming months, as our friends at FanSets tell us they are changing over from the familiar ‘blue clouds’ product packaging that’s been seen on Trek merchandise for the last few years to the new 2018 design.

Our Toy Fair coverage isn’t over yet! Keep coming back throughout the next few days for more from the trade show, including a look at a new Star Trek game set to arrive later this year!

Toy Fair 2018: More QMx STAR TREK 1:6 Model Prototypes

In addition to the new Star Trek: Discovery badges revealed this morning at Toy Fair in New York City, QMx also rolled out a number of still-developing prototype figures to expand their 1:6-scale line of high-quality Star Trek character reproductions.

Over the past year QMx has debuted their 1:6 “Space Seed” Khan Singh figure, and on display at Toy Fair is their prototype Star Trek II-era Khan, complete with wild silver hair and scavenged wardrobe from the Botany Bay.

Joining him from the movie line are the next iteration of the Wrath of Khan-era Admiral Kirk and Captain Spock, with wonderfully-detailed ‘monster maroon’ uniforms, right down to the pip-and-squeak insignia on their wrists.

From The Next Generation comes QMx’s 1:6 Lt. Commander Data prototype, following in the footsteps of QMx’ 1:6 Captain Picard released in 2017, complete with 24th Century uniform details and a standard Starfleet tricorder.

Finally, from the days of the Original Series comes Montgomery Scott and Hikaru Sulu, complete with classic Trek uniforms and accessories.

As with all of QMx’s prototypes, there’s no release date for any of these figures yet determined, as each continues to work through licensing and likeness approvals.

*   *   *

Along with the 1:6 figures comes two of QMx’s first “Master Series Latinum Edition” models, the Enterprise-D and Picard as Locutus, which are rolling out as part of the Star Trek “Mission Crate” releases from LootCrate this Spring.

The two models will be LootCrate exclusives for a time, but are expected to eventually come to QMx’s web store for direct purchase. The second “Latinum Edition” releases, not on display at Toy Fair, will be a USS Defiant ship model and a Lieutenant Worf character model.

We’re not done with Toy Fair yet! Come back tomorrow for more from the show, including our look at lots of stylish new Trek bags from The Coop, and a status update on at McFarlane Toys’ Star Trek: Discovery phaser!

Toy Fair 2018: Gentle Giant’s DISCOVERY Fleet Flyers

First announced late Friday night, Gentle Giant Toys’ Star Trek: Discovery Fleet Flyer starship miniatures made their real-world debut at Toy Fair 2018 in New York City today, where we got a close look at these not-quite-finished prototype designs.

The first-wave Discovery Fleet Flyer line of miniature ships consists of the Walker-class USS Shenzhou and Crossfield-class USS Discovery of course, but also the Vulcan shuttle seen depicted at the beginning of “Lethe,” as well as two ships from the Battle of the Binary Stars: the Nimitz-class USS Europa and the Malachowski-class USS Clarke.

The miniatures as displayed at Toy Fair are still in the prototype stage, with final sculpt and paint implementation still to be revised — notably the overly-golden hull of the Discovery is already on Gentle Giants’ to-be-corrected list, so don’t worry about that slipping by.

These ships, each measuring between 3″-5″ in length, are produced from injection-molded plastic and are equipped with a clear plastic stand which mounts to flat surfaces with a suction cup, and then each ship can be positioned in as you wish using the stand’s multiple ball joints.

Like the forthcoming starship model kits from Round2, these miniatures are using the sleek new 2018 Star Trek packaging style which appears here in an artists’ rendering (and can be seen as pre-approval print form in some of the above photos).

Gentle Giant tells us that the Fleet Flyers, due for retail release this fall, will be priced at $7.99 per ship, and is expected to be available through Target, Amazon, Walmart.com, and other well-known retailers. Once these reach final approval and become available for order, we’ll certainly let you know.

Keep checking back to TrekCore as our Toy Fair 2018 coverage continues!

Toy Fair 2018: Round2 Reveals New STAR TREK Model Kits

We’re continuing our coverage of Toy Fair 2018 here in New York City by checking out Round2 Corp. — parent company to perennial Star Trek model lines AMT and Polar Lights — and what they’ve got on the docket for the upcoming year.

First up is a set of AMT starship kits which have recently debuted, the 1:1400-scale Vor’cha-class Klingon battle cruiser and 1:750-scale Galor-class Cardassian vessel, a pair of glue-together model kits which each measure over a foot long when assembled.

Each of these two AMT models includes appropriate decal labels and a species-themed metal stand for display.

In addition, packaging for an upcoming Star Trek: The Motion Picture-era Constitution-class USS Enterprise was on display — set to debut in March — measuring a whopping 22″ at 1:537-scale. Included with the starship will be a shuttlecraft with variant label options.

Also debuting at the Round2 display is a pair of snap-together model kits from their Polar Lights line. The new USS Defiant and USS Grissom + Klingon Bird-of-Prey models are each set at 1:1000-scale, and will also include pennants, labels, and other appropriate hull markings.

Note that these two products’ box artwork is still in the prototype phase and is not finalized for production — the Oberth-class ship featured is not the USS Oberth, but in fact the USS Grissom from Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. This will certainly be corrected by release.

The Defiant model is due out first, coming this April, with the Grissom / Bird-of-Prey set for a May 2018 release.

These two Polar Lights releases are some of the first Star Trek products to wear the new 2018 Trek packaging design, featuring the sharp white and solid-color styling and including an artists’ rendition of the series’ lead character in the corner.

We also saw some other Trek toys wearing these new box designs at Toy Fair, which we’ll note as we continue our coverage of the trade show this weekend!

ToyFair 2018: QMx Debuts New Trio of DISCOVERY Badges

ToyFair 2018 kicked off today in New York City, where companies from around the world come to show off their new games, toys, and collectibles to retailers large and small — and our team is on site checking out all that’s new in Star Trek merchandise for the year to come!

We start today with the booth from QMx, the prop replica company that first revealed their Star Trek: Discovery Starfleet insignia badges last summer at San Diego Comic Con. We’ve been waiting since the new series debuted to see if they would follow up that first wave of magnetic pins with any more from the series, and today we can confirm that their next round of badges is right around the corner!

First up is the bronze Starfleet Academy badge worn by Cadet Sylvia Tilly throughout the first season of Discovery, backed in black and featuring four stripes to signify her final year at the Academy.

(Note: speckles on badge are dust from display showroom.)

The Discovery cadet badge will arrive in the operations variant only, matching the one worn by Tilly until her commission to ensign was issued in “Will You Take My Hand?.” While the image above is a QMx prototype, the final design is in production now and is projected to arrive in April 2018 at a $14.95 price point.

Secondly, the mysterious black Starfleet badges seen in “Context is for Kings” is on the way for April 2018 as well, with a glossy black finish in the large section of the delta, and a mirror finish on the smaller division.

(Note: speckles on badge are dust from display showroom.)

These badges are listed as simply “Magnetic Black Badge” at QMx’s display, so there’s no answers here as to what they signify in Discovery‘s Starfleet service — even the QMx representative we spoke with said CBS wasn’t sharing! Perhaps we’ll find out more about these unique badges when the series returns next year; until then, the black deltas will retail at $14.95.

The third new badge on display was the classic insignia of the Klingon Empire, newly rendered for Star Trek: Discovery.

(Note: speckles on badge are dust from display showroom.)

The traditional trefoil design of the Klingon Empire is rendered in this new magnetic badge in a brushed silver coloring, with a glossy blood-red backing, and are sure to bring honor to your house if you add it to your collection.

Also set to retail at $14.95, the Klingon badge will be arriving for sale in May 2018.

Stay tuned to TrekCore all weekend for the latest Trek news out of ToyFair 2018!

DISCOVERY Fleet Flyer Toys Announced from Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant Studios, a company which specializes in 3D scanning and prototype construction, first came onto the Star Trek scene back in the summer of 2017 with their wildly impressive recreation of the Klingon Torchbearer seen at San Diego Comic Con.

Now, in a new announcement released last night, they are launching a subdivision called Gentle Giant Toys, and included in their first wave of new products are a set of Discovery model ships called “Fleet Flyers.”

The first series of Fleet Flyers: USS Discovery, USS Europa, USS Shenzhou.

Boldly GO!… AND take your favorite ships from Starfleet with you! From the runaway hit TV series Star Trek: Discovery comes Gentle Giant’s Fleet Flyers! Relive your favorite space battles or explore the outer reaches of the quadrant with these replica spacecraft that have appeared in the new season of Star Trek: Discovery.

Each vessel is sculpted using actual digital models from the show, capturing every detail of each unique ship from both the Federation, the Klingon Empire and the yet unknown! Each ship comes packed with an articulated arm stand and suction cup so they can be attached to any smooth, flat surface for display!

Features: Screen accurate ship designs; deluxe, articulated suction cup armature so you can recreate your favorite epic space battles.

The product image above is subject to change and is still pending CBS final approval, but from what is shown it looks like these could be an interesting new source of Trek starships. There’s no details as to the size of the ships or a projected retail cost available yet, but these seem like they may be on the smaller side, which could make them a lower-cost competitor to the Eaglemoss Discovery model line.

Gentle Giant will be on site at Toy Fair in New York City this weekend, where our team will be scouting out all the newest in Star Trek toy and product details — we’ll be sure to bring you all the details from Gentle Giant regarding their Star Trek: Discovery “Fleet Flyers” once we know more!
