MINOR SPOILERS: Alan Van Sprang Says Leland’s Role a “Massive” Part of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Season 2

Yesterday at WonderCon Anaheim, the creative team behind Star Trek: Discovery revealed a ‘secret scene’ pulled out of the final episode of last season, “Will You Take My Hand?,” debuting actor Alan Van Sprang as an operative of Section 31, sent to Qo’noS to recruit emperor-in-exile Phillipa Georgiou to the clandestine organization.

In an interview recorded just after the Discovery panel, Flickering Myth caught up with the actor in a roundtable press discussion, where Van Sprang revealed that while his character ‘Leland’ was crafted in the final moments of the season, and he doesn’t yet know the details for how Season 2 will play out just yet, he knows that his character — and Section 31 — will be a big part of next year’s story arc.

[Season 2] is a mystery to me as well… It’s not only that I can’t say anything about it – which I can’t – but honestly, I know nothing about it. I really don’t. I did the last show, episode 15, that’s what you saw [at the panel], and they pulled it to be the teaser trailer [sic] for Season 2. So I know that I’m a part of Season 2, but I haven’t read anything, I don’t know what I’m doing.

I know [Section 31] is going to be a massive part of it, but honestly – and it’s not like I’m holding any secrets, like Jason Isaacs sitting here saying ‘I knew who I was, and what I was doing,’ no. I really have no idea. But I’m definitely a big part of Season 2. Definitely.

I think it’s a really interesting part of “Star Trek,” having this intelligence agency, and honestly, when I came in [to the convention] last night, they told me, “You cannot say anything!” It’s like “Fight Club.” “You cannot say ANYTHING about Section 31!” But I don’t even know anything! [laughs]

Like, I’m going into Season 2, and I know it’s a massive part of Season 2, but I really don’t know anything. But I look forward to it.

The actor also revealed that while he’s caught up on the Deep Space Nine episodes where Section 31 was first developed for the Star Trek franchise, he’s also looking forward to diving into the Star Trek: Section 31 novels from Simon & Schuster, which also expand the world of the secretive group.

I watched all of “Deep Space Nine” [Section 31 episodes], and I found own [Sloan] and the doctor [Bashir] from that show, their relationship, what they were doing… so I watched all of those episodes, and I think this is even more mysterious than that.

When we did [the Georgiou] scene, we didn’t know if the series was going to be picked up or not [for Season 2]… so now the research begins. There’s novels – there’s actually novels, books based on Section 31, so I’m just starting to read those… I’m sure they’re going to be interesting.

The last show I did, ‘Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments,’ there’s so many books on that, so I was reading those, and that was amazing, but Section 31, I’m really interested!

We’ll surely learn more about Leland and the role Section 31 will play as Season 2 moves into production this Spring, as pre-production continues in Toronto for filming to kick off next month.

TrekMovie confirmed at WonderCon this weekend that like the original plan for Season 1, Star Trek: Discovery will have 13 episodes to its second season, but there’s not yet a release date confirmed for when we’ll have Burnham, Saru, and the rest of the crew back for more adventures.

As always, keep coming back to TrekCore for the latest in Discovery news!

Reflections on DISCOVERY’s First Season and Secrets of Those Mysterious Black Badges Revealed at WonderCon

Star Trek: Discovery had their first convention day since last October’s New York Comic Con event at WonderCon Anaheim today, where a host of the series’ creative minds came to reflect back on Season 1, look ahead to Season 2, and share some secrets fans have been wondering about for months.

Moderated by series actress Mary Chieffo, the panel of production and art contributors was made up of executive producers Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, prop master Mario Moreira, costume designer Gersha Phillips, makeup artists Glenn Hetrick and James MacKinnon, production designer Tamara Deverell, composer Jeff Russo, and visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman.

The opening half of the panel was a look back at Discovery‘s first season, from props to sets to costumes. Hetrick recounted his excitement at learning he’d have the opportunity to work on the series, calling it an “out of body experience,” but relishing the chance to contribute to the Star Trek franchise.

Moriera spoke about his favorite prop from last season, the redesigned Klingon bat’leth, and humorously referenced the skills of outside vendors who helped provide some of the more intricate and high-level props like Georgiou’s sword, saying that it’s “easier” to get top work when artists are told it would be for Star Trek.

https://twitter.com/mayhemstudios/status/977695550777696256

Production designer Tamara Deverell talks about the “sad day” the Discovery art department when the Ship of the Dead — aka the Sarcophagus Ship — was torn down after filming was done on the set. Many elements from that set later ended up as parts of other sets’ decor, such as the base camp of the Mirror Universe rebels on Harlak or in the season finale on Qo’noS.

Composer Jeff Russo, who we last spoke to in December, told the audience that he eventually stopped reading scripts ahead of filming so he could be surprised when he received the final cuts of the episodes for scoring. “It made me feel what [the characters] were going to feel,” he said. On a lighter note, Russo also mentioned that he has a Spock doll on his piano, joking that he speaks to it — “Is that weird?”

Looking ahead to Season 2, the producers reiterate that Discovery is set in the Prime Star Trek timeline — as opposed to the Kelvin Timeline of the recent films — and even though “[Our] technology is different [and] our ship runs differently,” said Harberts, “Season 2 is really exciting for us because we’ll get to show how Discovery really fits” in the Prime universe.

Even Starfleet uniforms, which were dramatically redesigned for Discovery by Gersha Phillips, may become more familiar as next year progresses. “We ended the season with the Enterprise,” Harberts teased, “and we know what [that ship’s] uniforms looked like… I’ll leave it at that.”

Finally, as a surprise, showrunner Aaron Harberts revealed a “secret scene” cut from “Will You Take My Hand?”, featuring a sequence with Michelle Yeoh’s Mirror Georgiou, back in the the Orion brothel in a bar on Qo’noS, which she now appears to run.

For USA viewers:

For Canadian viewers:

For European viewers:

A man who appears to be a Trill (played by actor Alan Van Sprang) approaches the former Emperor, but she calls him out on not seeming like a typical Trill. The man hits a button, and his Trill spots disappear, revealing he’s human after all. Georgiou tells him that she “thought [the Federation and I] had an agreement.”

He tells her that it’s still a dangerous universe, despite the Klingon-Federation cease fire struck during the season finale, and that while he wants “galactic peace… that doesn’t come without vigilance, or a moral cost.”

“You don’t sound like Starfleet,” Georgiou tells him, and he confirms that he’s not part of that organization. “We’re far more resourceful… and we know how to keep a secret,” he says. “We believe you would be a valuable asset to us.”

The man (called “Leland” in CBS press notations) pulls out a small box, leaving it on a table for Georgiou to open, and he closes with an ominous message: “Welcome to Section 31.”

Georgiou opens the box. (CBS)

Sprang appeared at the WonderCon panel, and described the difficulty of keeping the secret since he filmed the scene last fall, and seemed to confirm he’d be appearing in Discovery when it returns for Season 2: “If you ask me anything, I’ll just nod,” he said, “I can’t say anything.”

Speaking of those Black badges, QMx’s replica, which we saw up-close-and-personal at ToyFair last month, finally have a product listing page at QMx’s site. While the Black badge, along with the Starfleet Cadet badge, is not yet available for purchase, their pricing has been confirmed at $14.95 each.

IDW Announces Third NEXT GEN Mirror Universe Comic Miniseries, TERRA INCOGNITA, Coming This Summer

Today at WonderCon in California, Star Trek comic publisher IDW held their Keep on Trekkin’ panel for attendees at the Anaheim-based convention, looking ahead to their ongoing — and concluding — Trek comic titles for 2018, and made a new announcement about an upcoming new venture kicking off later this year.

In attendance was IDW group editor Sarah Gaydos, writers Mike JohnsonScott TiptonDavid Tipton, artist J.K. Woodward, and Star Trek: Discovery writer (and Voyager novelist) Kirsten Beyer, who is co-writing the Discovery comics with Johnson.

Regarding the soon-to-conclude Star Trek: Boldly Go series, focusing on the post-Star Trek Beyond adventures of the Kelvin Timeline crew, Johnson recapped the recent “I.D.I.C.” storyline — which called back to the first Kelvin comic stories from several years back — and he again confirmed the series’ end, stating that IDW is going to “hit pause” until the future of the film series is known.

Beyer spoke to how the team worked to find comic stories to connect to the live-action Star Trek: Discovery series, and how there was a need to find tales to tell that could fit into the highly-serialized nature of the television episode.

Knowing that the first season was so heavily-focused on new Klingon characters, that gave inspiration to centering the first Discovery comic tie-in — “The Light of Kahless” — around T’Kuvma and the Klingon Empire.

The next Discovery comic series, “Succession,” kicks off in April, tied into the Mirror Universe and the characters introduced in the second half of Discovery‘s first season. The story will provide a look at the history between the Mirror Discovery characters — something only briefly discussed on-screen — like Gabriel Lorca’s history with the Terran Empire’s Michael Burnham.

Three of the first covers have been revealed so far, from George CaltsoudasElizabeth Beals, and Yoshi Yoshitani (above).

The IDW panel also recapped the plans for May’s Star Trek: TNG — Through the Mirror five-week event, which revisits 2017’s Mirror Broken tale by bringing in the Enterprise-D crew of the Prime universe and putting them up against their interdimensional duplicates. Each issue will be release during one week in May, with all five brought to life by different artists.

All five primary covers (above) are from J.K. Woodward, with interior art by Chris Johnson, Marcus To, Josh Hood, Carlos Nieto, and Debora Carita. A number of variant covers will also be released, as per IDW’s standard practice, from both the interior artists as well as concept artist Peter McKinstry.

The Star Trek: Discovery Annual release first announced back in December has a street date of April 4, and as previously reported, will center around Paul Stamets and Hugh Culber, focusing on their individual backstories, and the early days of their relationship.

The 48-page release features a pair of covers by longtime IDW artists Angel Hernandez and George Caltsoudas.

Finally, IDW made their big announcement about yet another Mirror Universe tale set to debut this summer… Star Trek: TNG — Terra Incognita. The six-issue miniseries follows the ongoing Next Generation saga started with Mirror Broken and continuing in Through the Mirror, but this time brings one of the Mirror characters over to the Prime Enterprise-D to cause havoc among the Federation crew.

Terra Incognita will continue to be written by Scott and David Tipton featuring artwork by Tony Shasteen, and covers from J.K. Woodward, Shasteen, and Elizabeth Beals.

IDW’s press release is below; while it specifies an August release in the text, the WonderCon panel announcement detailed a July release.

After the stellar success of Star Trek: The Next Generation: Mirror Broken, which introduced the alternate “Mirror” villainous version of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew to comics, and the excitement around the upcoming five-week mega-event Star Trek: The Next Generation: Through The Mirror, IDW now returns to the original, or “prime,” universe this August in Star Trek: The Next Generation: Terra Incognita, beginning a brand-new wave of episodic miniseries!

This six-issue miniseries reveals unique, focused stories where beloved characters find themselves in new, unfamiliar situations, in a format echoing the “done-in-one” nature of the television series. However, each issue also features a subtle throughline of an evil Mirror Universe crewmember established in the Mirror Broken and Through the Mirror series remaining on the ship, wreaking havoc while posing as his prime universe counterpart.

Featuring the best of both the Mirror and original universes, Terra Incognita is a unique new step in this riveting saga.

We’ll have more details on that upcoming tale as it breaks, along with our reviews of the Terra Incognita story when it kicks off this summer.

For the 25th anniversary of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the folks over at Star Trek Online are heading back to the Gamma Quadrant this June with a new chapter in their story, set to feature many of the original cast members of the Trek spinoff series!

Three of the best-loved characters from Deep Space Nine — Kira Nerys, Odo, and Quark — will be joining the game in STO’s upcoming “Victory is Life” expansion, and will be portrayed by series actors Nana Visitor, Rene Auberjonois, and Armin Shimerman, returning to their roles after nearly two decades. They’ll be joining J.G. Hertzler (Martok) who has been part Star Trek Online for some time.

More returning cast is expected to be announced soon, with GameSpot.com already mentioning plans for Alexander Siddig (Julian Bashir) and Andrew Robinson (Garak) named as additional characters coming.

In addition to the returning Deep Space Nine cast, the game will also expand for the first time to allow Jem’Hadar gameplay, with the soldiers of the Dominion joining the myriad of alien races that can be accessed in the game.

The “Victory is Life” expansion for Star Trek Online will arrive this June.

More Details on STAR TREK ONLINE Ship Models Revealed

We first told you about Star Trek Online‘s new 3D-printed ship model program last month, and we’ve now got more details about the company’s plans and pricing for this new project!

Star Trek Online executive producer Steve Ricossa gives a brief overview of the program and options in the video which premiered online last week:

Pricing for the 12-inch starship models, 3D printed on demand, has also been announced, with final product options including unpainted, single-color, and full-color finishes, depending on users’ preferences and price range.

Collectible Version: Base Price: $350
Captains can commission one of the company’s master artists to hand-paint a premium, full-colored resin model of their starship, which includes detailed shading. Exceptional artistry and focus is placed on each individual ship.

Single Color Version: Base Price: $225
Captains can order a 3D-printed model of their starship, painted in either gold, silver, bronze or black. The model is polished, finished and ready for display.

Primer Version: Base price: $200
Model painters and hobbyists can order a primed model of their favorite starship, coated in a base layer of primer and ready to be painted.

Players who access Star Trek Online via PC will have the opportunity to upload their custom starship designs right into Mixed Dimensions’ servers, the production company building the models. For non-PC players, there will be non-customized versions “replicating 20 of the game’s most popular starships,” according to the official STO blog.

There are also a series of ships which will not be available for printing, including the Crossfield-class and Walker-class from Star Trek: Discovery, as well as the Vesta-class series (best known to Trek novel fans as the starship design of Ezri Dax’s USS Aventine).

All the details about the new program can be found at the STO news blog and the GamePrint.net ordering site. The team behind the model program also answered fan questions on Reddit last Friday to address more specific game and product inquiries.

“Terrans Unite!” Lager Joins Shmaltz STAR TREK Beer Line

2018 is the year of the Mirror Universe, with Star Trek: Discovery’s first-season storyline, upcoming comic series, and the sequel to IDW’s Mirror Broken comic taking the TNG crew back across the dimensional divide — and now there’s an official beer of the Mirror Universe, too.

Shmaltz Brewing Company, who has developed several varieties of Trek-themed beers since 2016, now offers “Terrans Unite!” India Pale Lager, styled with artwork from J.K. Woodward’s 2017 Star Trek: TNG – Mirror Broken comics.

From Shmaltz’ website:

What if there was another world, a world that appeared similar to our own, with the same people, the same places, and even the same advancements in technology, but a world in which the motives and ethics of its inhabitants were turned upside down? The heroic now villainous and the noble corrupt, valuing power over peace and willing to obtain their desires by any means necessary – this is the Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe.

Our universe may feel villainous and corrupt at times, but we can still find comfort in good friends and tasty beer. By spanning north and south, east and west, continents and traditions, Mirror Universe blends ingredients bringing together the world of brave new craft brewing. HOPS – MALTS – LAGER – UNITE!

MALTS: 2-Row, Pilsen, Patagonia 90
HOPS: Pacific Gem, Centennial
5% ABV

This is the seventh variety of Trek beer the company has developed over the past few years, with the most recent being the “Captain’s Holiday” ale in December.

You can track down Smaltz’s Star Trek beers at distributors in your area, or stop by their brewery if you’re in the New York area.

Isaacs Wins EMPIRE Award, Talks TREK Fan Community

As we reported back in JanuaryStar Trek: Discovery actor Jason Isaacs was nominated for an Empire Award, an annual entertainment award from Empire Magazine, and this week the former Captain Lorca snagged a win in the contest for Best Actor in a TV Series.

Latif with actress Celia Imrie. (Image via EmpireOnline.com)

Discovery actor Shazad Latif was on hand at the Empire Awards, who was stopped briefly at the ceremony’s red carpet to chat about Season 2; the actor noted that he’ll “start again [on Discovery] in May,” a bit later than the announced return to production in April.

(That being said, with the season-ending Enterprise cliffhanger, Ash Tyler’s journey to the Klingon Empire may not begin until a few episodes into the second season.)

In addition to his win, Isaacs has been touring the media circuit discussing his new film The Death of Stalin, and in a recent interview with Chicago-based Third Coast Review, the actor spoke about his experience becoming part of the Star Trek universe, and his upcoming travels to both the 2018 Las Vegas convention, and next January’s Star Trek cruise.

[The Star Trek community is] amazing. Obviously I’ve been in the Harry Potter films, so I know what fandom is like. I’ve met some of the fabulous, passionate fans, but they’ve only been fans since the year 2000. There are many people I’ve met now who have been obsessed with “Star Trek” for 50 years.

It’s overwhelming, but it’s a new and wonderful thing. Jonathan Frakes, who played Riker [on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”] and directed some of our episodes, has been my guide and mentor though the madness of it all, and he persuaded me to sign up for some of the truly extraordinary “Star Trek” experiences like going on a “Star Trek” cruise with fans.

Isaacs (second from right) joins fans at “After Trek” to watch the week’s episode.

I said to him, “I can’t imagine anything worse.” He said, “I did it, and it’s great, and you’re coming.” It’s a very eclectic bunch of people, as you would imagine, who have in common only that they love “Star Trek” for different reasons—some of them because they like the ships and uniforms, some of them like the philosophy—but they are drawn from a very, very interesting pool, that’s for sure.

I’ve done some Harry Potter conventions recently, and the Trek fans have found me there, but I’ve never been to an exclusively “Star Trek” thing. Subject to work, I’ll be going to Las Vegas this year, which apparently turns into a giant “Star Trek” city for a week. I can’t pretend I’m not looking forward to it.

I’ve only met lovely people and had lovely conversations, and they are slightly insane, often, but in a great way.

We don’t yet know if Isaacs will make any future appearances in Star Trek: Discovery, but here’s hoping we haven’t seen the last of Gabriel Lorca.

Trek Comics Review: “Boldly Go #17”

With this penultimate issue of I.D.I.C. bringing this exciting story to a close, it’s Mike Johnson’s task to finally reveal the identity of the mysterious villain who has been narrating the last five issues of the variety of Enterprise crews from different dimensional origins.

Though the nature of the villain was clear to the reader through clues like mentions of omniscience, reference to our ape-like brains, and limited ability to perceive infinity, his identity was a guarded secret.

However, now we know that Gary Mitchell has returned for vengeance.

To be honest, I did not see that coming. After all, I have to confess that I haven’t read the full run of Star Trek: Ongoing — the first Kelvin Timeline comic series — which for me is a cardinal sin when it comes to being an authority on Star Trek comics. Yet, in my defence, 2011 was a pretty hairy year. I was lucky I was even able to pick up a basic load of comics on a monthly basis.

But to me, that’s something to say in Mike Johnson’s credit; he has a wealth of adaptive stories about the Kelvin Timeline that IDW really needs to tap into and promote more. If Paramount ever wants to see a greater fan-reaction return on the film series, then the ancillary works are the way to go.  Star Trek: Ongoing #2 is the issue to reference for Star Trek Boldly Go #17, as that is when we see the Kelvin adaptation of the classic episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

The original Star Trek: Ongoing series has been republished twice, in both smaller four-issue paperback releases and larger twelve-issue collections under the Star Trek: New Adventures title; the Gary Mitchell story is in Star Trek: Volume 1 and New Adventures #1.

It’s this type of work that will lure Original Series fans to seeing how talented writers like Mike Johnson can reconcile the two universes together, and I admire that he’s been doing this for years. However, with the news that Chris Ryall will be leaving IDW, it makes me wonder, who will be Star Trek’s champion there?

I like how Johnson also weaves in the concept of the “no-win” scenario into this story. Though this is a concept that predates Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan when we first learn of this aspect in Kirk’s past, it’s one that is canonically acceptable to bring up and Johnson weaves this well into the fabric of Gary Mitchell’s revenge.

Given that he has been watching, gathering strength after his defeat in Star Trek: Ongoing, it is a surprise to bring a villain from that far back into the series’ successor. With the nearing end of Star Trek: Boldly Go, this is a very stark and “full-circle” move.

I particularly liked the reference to “the timelines where you’re on an Enterprise powered by mushrooms!” – that made me laugh.

I also have to give credit to Marcus To. His art is straightforward, solid and wonderfully lined. In fact, given the title of the comic uses the word “bold,” so is his art. It’ll be a shame to see it ending as this series closes.

  • Marcus To leads the way with Cover A, and there’ a lot of Andy Warhol in this cover as we look at reality and racial variants of Sulu, Scotty and McCoy. It’s striking and I think I have to declare it as my favourite one out of the lot.

  • Cover B by Fico Ossio is also a very attractive and striking cover. As much as I liked it, I have to say that I’ve never seen Fico’s work before. This validates my claim that comic covers should be by comic artists and it’s a great chance to see new artists strut their stuff.

  • However, I can’t say the same for the Retailer Cover A which is a simple photo cover. It’s a waste of cover space to use a simple photo and reveals the nature of production choices involved in selecting a cover for a limited print run for a Retailer variant.

Because it’s a small number, the editorial powers-that-be would rather use a photo than an artist because of costs. I understand that choice, but it defies the nature of the medium.

  • Yoshi Yoshitani provides another fantastic and fanciful representation of a dynamic Uhura posed and ready for combat. I’d rather covers represented some aspect of the story, but there’s not doubting that this is a beautiful piece of work. I’d rather see it as a pin-up though, instead of as a cover.

You see, there’s a strong mood of betrayal in Star Trek: Boldly Go #17. Though Mitchell’s anger is clearly a result of the madness he took on when he was gifted with his powers, he still vents this rage at Kirk for reasons of abandonment and resentment. It’s hard to not see this paralleled with the fact that this series is ending, and I think there should me more attention to the fact this book closed a lot of gaps between the regular Trek universe and the Kelvin Timeline.

I liked seeing Gary Mitchell back and it brought the Kelvin Timeline closer to me than I thought could happen. It’s writers like Johnson that make this type of relationship happen. I enjoyed this and I look forward to the resolution between Mitchell and Kirk – who has managed to trick him into a final showdown by evening the odds, as we would expect Kirk to do.

I am not looking forward to this series ending — but next month it will, when Star Trek: Boldly Go #18 brings IDW’s Kelvin Timeline comic series to a close.
