SDCC Exclusive: Captain Sulu’s USS EXCELSIOR Tea Set Joins Factory Entertainment’s STAR TREK Drinkware Line

In just over one day following Monday’s reveal, Factory Entertainment sold out of their USS Enterprise-A teacup set — and due to the unexpected fan demand for the product, they’ve done a slingshot maneuver around the sun to bring in their planned 2021 follow-up to fans today!

UPDATE: This teacup set sold out in less than two hours!

Announced today and up for preorder now, their companion USS Excelsior teacup-and-saucer set has just joined the party — a replica of the blue-and-white dishware set used by Captain Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Originally planned for release during next year’s convention season, the unexpected fan demand for their Enterprise-A release earlier this week drove the company to move up their planned follow-up to this summer instead!

From the official release:

A prop replica cup and saucer set, from the USS Excelsior NCC-2000 as featured in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country! Crafted in fine porcelain, this set is suitable for tea of coffee and is presented in a gift box with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

The teacup and saucer formed part of a ‘Ship’s Dinnerware’ service, the prop used on set was found object with applied stickers.

This officially licensed, faithfully accurate prop replica features a silk-screened logo with metallic gold accents to the striking blue-marble design. Saucer measures 6 ¼” in diameter.

Tom Vargas from Factory Entertainment talks more about this surprise release in today’s Consolation-Con video:

It got a close-up appearance in the opening moments of the film, and then the captain’s fine serving ware found a quick end by smashing to the deck as the ship encountered violent shockwaves caused by the Praxis explosion.

Captain Sulu’s teacup…. just before shattering on the deck.

The Excelsior tea set was also seen in use during the recreated events of Star Trek VI during Voyager Season 3’s “Flashback,” seen when the captain takes a moment to appreciate one of young Tuvok’s Vulcan blends.

Of course, old-school collectors will remember the line of Excelsior and Enterprise-A dishware released by Pfaltzgraff in the early 1990’s; for those fans who missed their chance at that long-out-of-production run — or don’t want to pay exorbitant prices for surviving sets in the eBay market — this makes a great second chance.

That said: this run of teacups is even smaller than the Enterprise-A batch, and is likely to sell out just as quickly — if not faster. Limited to just 250 sets in total, the Excelsior teacup-and-saucer set was available to preorder now at Factory Entertainment’s webshop for $35 per set.

The company also revealed in today’s video announcement (above) that they’re working on a full-size, 1:1-scale Ressikan Flute from “The Inner Light,” the classic episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where Captain Picard lives an entire alternate life as Kamin of planet Kataan.

While the entire project remains under development — still working to finalize the finish on the metal flute as well as the design on the included display box — the planned release also is expected to include a built-in audio chip which will play the iconic “Inner Light” flute theme.

Factory Entertainment’s Barry Eldridge shows off a prototype of the Ressikan Flute replica.

As explained in the video above, there is still a lot of licensing negotiation to be completed before the product’s availability can be announced, so as soon as there’s official word on how you can get one for yourself, we’ll have the details here!

Three New STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS Images Beam Down

We’re a week away from next Thursday’s Star Trek Universe panel, where showrunner Mike McMahan and cast will bring us our first long-form look at Star Trek: Lower Decks — but today we’ve got three more images from the upcoming show to meet with your inspection!

Released this afternoon, the first image shows the Lower Decks crew — Ensigns Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), Tendi (Noel Wells), Mariner (Tawny Newsome), and Boimler (Jack Quaid) — sharing a moment at what looks to be the USS Cerritos’ equivalent of Ten Forward… though perhaps not a moment Boimler is enjoying!

Next up is a solo shot of a sheepish-looking Ensign Rutherford, giving us a good look at the digital eyepiece that’s replaced his left eye, as well as the details in his hair and eyebrow design.

Finally, we see this interesting shot of Ensigns Boimler, Mariner, and Tendi in what looks to be one of the Cerritos’ lower-decks facilities, a cargo storage and repair bay that includes a broken down shuttle… and a few spare warp nacelles lying around as well.

One of the Cerritos’ lower-decks cargo facilities.

We’re sure to see even more from Lower Decks between now and San Diego Comic Con’s online events next week — and then during the big final push leading up to the show’s debut on August 6.

REVIEW: Eaglemoss XL — USS Excelsior (NCC-2000)

While the second starship of this class warped into collectors’ hands last summer, the original and best Excelsior-class starship joined the XL-sized Official Starships Collection in late 2019 — bringing Captain Sulu’s first command home to your personal armada.

Designed by ILM artists David Carson (no relation to the Generations director) and Nilo Rodis — whose various prototype designs for the Excelsior-class have made their way into the subscription-sized collection — the USS Excelsior first appeared in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (under registry NX-2000) and its starship class made subsequent appearances in the remaining classic Trek films and all the 24th century television series.

Carrying its appearance and registry number from Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, the USS Excelsior NCC-2000 is a 10″-long, weighty model, with a die-cast metal saucer section and molded plastic secondary hull and warp nacelle assembly. It’s certainly got a decent weight to it, but can be slightly front-heavy if not mounted well on its display stand.

Though the Enterprise-B studio model was a modified version of the Excelsior studio model, the Enterprise-B and Excelsior XL starships are not based on the same digital files — in fact, this XL-sized Excelsior release is a totally separate creation than the XL-sized Enterprise-B.

The changes manifest themselves when stacked up side by side. In addition to the changes added for the Enterprise-B in Star Trek: Generations, the XL Excelsior has a very different paint scheme, thinner secondary hull, and slightly shorter nacelles than the XL Enterprise-B model.

The discrepancy appears to be due to the fact that the reference photos available to the digital modeler working on the Excelsior were from the three-foot studio model that was constructed specifically for the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Flashback,” rather than the original theatrical shooting model.

When the production concluded that the modifications made to the Excelsior model to turn it into the Enterprise-B could not be undone, a new physical model was constructed to serve as the Excelsior in that episode.

The digital model of the Excelsior used to create the XL model, therefore, largely relies upon that 1996-built model which means — while it may be rather accurate to the Voyager appearance, it has some noticeable inaccuracies from the starship as seen in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

The secondary hull is thinner than it should be, and the overall proportions are much better on the Enterprise-B XL. In addition, the deflector dish is set much further back on the Excelsior XL than in its on-screen movie appearances.

However, the Excelsior XL notably gets something right that the Enterprise-B XL neglected: the blue stripes around the edge of the saucer section. For most buyers of the model, they would never have cause to notice (nor care about) the discrepancies, thankfully these differences rise nowhere near the level of the rather poor Enterprise-A XL model, which had several very noticeable flaws.

The Excelsior has much heavier aztecing than the Enterprise-B, with much higher contrasts between coloring. It certainly makes the colors on the model pop, where the Enterprise-B has a more muted color scheme to it. The fine paint details across the model appear to be more pronounced on the Excelsior than they do on the Enterprise-B.

Overall, the Excelsior XL is a very nice model. Though it is not completely accurate in every detail, it looks great on the shelf, and the vibrant aztecing and stark colors ensure that it stands out among your ships.

If you’d like to add Captain Sulu’s ship to your fleet, it’s available in the US for $74.95 and in the UK for £49.99 now.

SDCC Exclusive STAR TREK VI Enterprise-A Tea Set Revealed

Hot on the heels of their new Star Trek bottle openers announced last week, our friends at Factory Entertainment have another new drinkware plan for this year’s convention season!

July 14 Update: This has SOLD OUT at Factory Entertainment’s site.

Announced today — and up for preorder now — the company has revealed a replica USS Enterprise-A teacup and saucer set, a replica of the fine china used aboard the Constitution-class refit during the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

…as seen from the banquet with Chancellor Gorkon’s entourage.

While the original set-used teacups were found items with Starfleet labeling applied for use during production of the film, these are all new porcelain items created for the 2020 convention season.

Factory Entertainment’s forthcoming ENTERPRISE-A teacup-and-saucer set.

NOTE: This image is a prototype; this post will be updated with final-product images once available. (The curved text is already addressed!)

Here’s the official word on the new release:

A prop replica cup and saucer set, from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A. As featured in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Crafted in fine porcelain, this set is suitable for tea of coffee and is presented in a gift box with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

This prop was seen during the state banquet scene where Captain Kirk and the Senior Officers dine with Chancellor Gorkon’s Klingon peace delegation. It formed part of a ‘Ship’s Dinnerware’ service, for state and formal dining. The props used on set where found objects with applied stickers.

This officially licensed, faithfully accurate prop replica features a silk-screened logo with metallic gold accents to the striking blue-marble design.  Saucer measures 6 ¼” in diameter.

This convention exclusive is limited to only 500 pieces.

Factory Entertainment’s release seems relatively faithful to the original prop, seen in greater detail via recent-year auctions, though with some slight adjustments made to sizing of the text and Starfleet delta.

A different version of the original props was seen aboard Captain Sulu’s USS Excelsior in the opening moments of the film — and later retrieved from storage during production on Voyager’s “Flashback” — without the gold backing behind the Starfleet insignia.

The Enterprise-A teacup-and-saucer set is limited to 500pc and is available for $30 from Factory Entertainment’s website.

The First STAR TREK: LOWER DECKS Trailer is Here!

It’s a Sunday surprise for Star Trek fans — after the trailer for next month’s new animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks inadvertently leaked online by way of the show’s Canadian distributor CTV SciFi Channel, CBS All Access has now debuted the official trailer for the rest of us!

INTERNATIONAL VERSION AVAILABLE HERE

The first real look at the adventures of Ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Tendi, Rutherford, and the crew of the ‘second contact’ starship USS Cerritos gives us a taste of the series’ first season, showcasing life aboard the ‘falling apart’ Starfleet vessel, away missions to alien worlds, and lots of familiar Starfleet technology and aliens as we return to the Alpha Quadrant in 2380.

While we’ll be pouring over the trailer for the next several weeks ahead of the show’s official August 6 release date, here’s a few quick reference we already noticed!

Argo buggies (‘Star Trek: Nemesis’) in the shuttle bay
A Ligonian glavin weapon (‘Code of Honor’) in Mariner’s cargo container
Boimler wearing his Starfleet dress uniform
A Napien crewman (‘Eye of the Beholder’) on the Cerritos’ bridge
Tendi wearing Starfleet stealth tactical gear (‘Chain of Command’)
Mariner’s PADD reflects a stardate equivalent to calendar year 2380

Accompanying the trailer is a new, second poster for Star Trek: Lower Decks, which also features the worn, ‘folded’ look of the original one from last week.

Certainly there is more to come on this front, so watch this post as we update it with more observations and connections to Star Trek’s past!

FanSets Continues STAR TREK Badge Line with DISCOVERY Command Delta

Our friends over at FanSets kicked off their line of full-size Star Trek series uniform insignia badges back in May with the first available Star Trek: Picard-era Starfleet emblem, and today the second entry in this new lineup: the command delta worn in Star Trek: Discovery.

Measuring just over 2.5″ tall and designed using the original screen-worn badges as reference, the Star Trek: Discovery delta pin features the same split-line design seen in the show, along with the iconic 23rd century command star symbol in its center.

Per the company’s description of this new pin:

This pin comes to you directly from the Star Trek Discovery series. It is full size at 2 ¾” tall. While manufactured with FanSets normal attention to detail this was not created to be a cos-play piece and is a pin, not a magnet. The pin has two posts/clutches to hold it securely in place. This pin is not a prop replica.

Unlike some of the more basic ‘flat’ pins that FanSets has issued in the past — like the Discovery Terran Empire badges back in 2018 — this is a fully three-dimensional build that carries the same curves and detailing as the badge worn by the show’s cast, and the solid construction means it’s certainly got some heft to it.

This pin-backed release isn’t the first Discovery command delta that’s made its way to the collectible market, of course; back in 2017, QMx issued their own wave of Discovery-era magnetic badges. While nearly identical in dimensions, the QMx version is a noticably more “yellow” shade of gold metal compared to the “softer” gold of FanSets’ design.

It’s been three years since QMx’s Discovery badges arrived, and despite multiple announcements of additional products — like the no-show Terran Empire and Discovery-era Enterprise deltas — but there’s been no sign of additional badges actually making its way to market from that company, and compete silence around Star Trek: Picard possibilities.

With that disappointment in mind, we’re happy to share that this month’s new release is just the beginning of their soon-to-expand Star Trek badge collection, as there are at minimum three more planned for the next few months — with more on the way coming down the road.

August will see the next Discovery-era design, as the black-and-silver Section 31 badge will become the third entry in the FanSets Star Trek delta line-up…

…and September will bring the inspiration for the Picard Starfleet delta, the original split-back “All Good Things…” future timeline Starfleet badge, which also appeared in Deep Space Nine’s “The Visitor,” and in Voyager’s “Timeless” and “Endgame.”

Originally planned for this summer, the company has shifted plans for the DS9/VOY-era Starfleet badge to a release date later in the year as the product continues to go through manufacturing refinement.

The new Star Trek: Discovery command delta pin is now available at FanSets web shop for $17.95.

Keep your sensors locked right here at TrekCore for news on the August and September releases when they beam down — and tell us, what Star Trek badge, pin, or patch would you like to see make an appearance in FanSets’ future plans?

Let us know in the comments below… because believe us, they’re listening!

The Empire Invades in New Klingon-Themed Updates to STAR TREK ONLINE and STAR TREK ADVENTURES Games

In a pair of new, big updates to the two biggest Star Trek gaming platforms, the Klingon Empire is set to take over this summer as both Star Trek Online and Star Trek Adventures each welcome the warrior race.

In the newest expansion to the long-running Star Trek Online, “House Divided,” actor J.G. Hertzler returns as Martok from Deep Space Nine — along with Robert O’Reilly as Gowron from both The Next Generation and DS9 —  in a story that combines elements from the Star Trek: Discovery era with the 24th Century Klingon Empire.

After accidentally sending herself and players through time with stolen Federation technology, J’Ula, sister of T’Kuvma (Discovery), finds herself at war as the modern Klingon Empire has done the unthinkable and allied themselves with the Federation. J’Ula and her lieutenant Aakar (Grandfather of Gowron) have taken it upon themselves to right this wrong, and call their true Klingon brethren to arms. It’s now up to the player to quell this rebellion alongside Martok (Deep Space Nine) and maintain the newly founded peace within the Federation.

This new epic war story brings two new playable episodes to Star Trek Online that all Star Trek fans are bound to enjoy. In addition, the new update includes a new month-long House Divided event for players to participate in to receive the Red Angel suit/armor, a 5-person space TFO over the Klingon Penal Colony of Rura Penthe, along with a new Angel’s Wake Lockbox — which contains the Ba’ul ship seen in the Star Trek: Discovery episode “The Sound of Thunder,” and Ba’ul Obelisk from Season 2 of Discovery.

The Red Angel suit from Discovery Season 2 also arrives for in-game use this month, a powerful reward that offers players a number of tactical moves to use against enemies.

The Time Crystals necessary to travel far through time weren’t possible to recreate, but the suit itself was. Powerful and versatile, it functions as standard combat armor until its special properties are needed. These properties, referred to as Red Angel Mode, can only be used for a short while before the systems must recharge.

All the in-game powers of the Red Angel suit — both defensive and offensive — are broken down in this feature piece at the official Star Trek Online blog.

Meanwhile, tabletop game Star Trek Adventures is also branching out into the world of the warrior with its new Star Trek Adventures: The Klingon Empire Core Rulebook, the latest addition to the role-playing series.

A new 390-page hardcover rulebook — complete with now-expected wonderful artwork adorning many of its pages — covers the entire history of Star Trek’s time with the Klingons, from the earliest clashes with humanity in Enterprise through the 24th century Dominion War era and beyond.

THE KLINGON EMPIRE core rulebook for the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game takes you to the Final Frontier of the Galaxy, where new worlds and new civilizations await bold Klingon warriors hungry for glory and honor. Your duties may take you to the edges of known space, to Klingon colonies in need, to the borders of neighboring galactic powers, or into the eye of interstellar phenomena. Your warship and crew represent the best-trained and most honorable of Klingon warriors, and your cunning and abilities are needed now more than ever.

A new threat looms from across the Gamma Quadrant, representing a worthy opponent for the worlds of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Tensions are high and it remains to be seen how the Klingon Empire will get involved. It is a volatile time for the Empire as her brave warriors and bold crews ready for battle against whatever foes present themselves.

Here’s a preview of the always-lovely artwork that adorns the pages of The Klingon Empire Core Rulebook:

Available for purchase now for $56 USD / £45 GBP, the hardcover edition is expected to ship to players this Fall.

New Behind-the-Scenes STAR TREK: PICARD Videos Amp Up Emmy Awards Consideration Push

Voting is now open for members of the Television Academy ahead of 2020’s Emmy Awards, and CBS All Access has been making quite the push for Patrick Stewart and the entire Star Trek: Picard team in an effort to raise awareness of the show for awards consideration.

Along with a multitude of new interviews with the cast — many of which reiterate some of the same behind-the-scenes information and stories that we’ve been hearing since the beginning of the pre-Season 1 press tour — there have also been a number of new behind-the-scenes videos that give a greater look into what’s needed to make the show.

First up, from the official Star Trek site, prosthetic casting supervisor Will Thorton takes us on a tour of the silicon headpiece production process to illustrate how today’s Romulan foreheads are brought to life:

Lead creature designer and prosthetic artist Neville Page and prosthetic designer Vincent Van Dyke detail what it took to recreate the Borg implants for Seven of Nine’s return to Star Trek after nearly two decades:

Picard visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman talks to Deadline Hollywood about the intricate digital effects needed to bring 2399 to life — with special looks at the construction of the crashed Borg cube on the shores of Coppellius, the downed La Sirena in the planet’s desert, and the massive Romulan fleet commanded by Commodore Oh.

Back in April, the official site also published this unique 360-degree video of the location filming on planet Vashti for “Absolute Candor,” allowing viewers to move the camera view around to all angles of Picard’s encounter with the burly Romulan ex-senator.

Star Trek: Picard’s first-season showrunner Michael Chabon joined star Patrick Stewart for an in-depth discussion of the seventh episode of the season, “Nepenthe,” which featured the much-hailed return of Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes) and Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis).

After a few months away, Wil Wheaton returned to The Ready Room with an “away mission” edition of the web series, featuring interviews with Stewart, makeup department head James MacKinnon, and Star Trek: Picard costume designer Christine Clark, along with an interesting tour of the La Sirena sets which give us a first look at the ship’s deck plans.

Costume designer Christine Clark also sat down for a solo interview with Gold Derby to talk about her work on Season 1 of Star Trek: Picard.

Star Trek: Picard is expected to return sometime in 2021, dependent on a return to filming.
