Right out of today’s Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic Con, the third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks finally gets a full trailer ahead of its August 25 return!
The first full-length look at Star Trek: Lower Decks‘ third season includes a heavy focus on the aftermath of Captain Freeman’s arrest at the end of Season 2 — and a visit the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, from dinner at Joseph Sisko’s restaurant in New Orleans to a rendezvous with starbase Deep Space 9 itself.
The trailer also reveals a voice cameo by J.G. Hertzler as General Martok, Rutherford taking a Delta Flyer-class ship for a ride (wearing a space-race uniform from Voyager’s “Drive”), Dr. T’Ana wielding a Starfleet-issue chainsaw in her sickbay, Mariner completing an orbital skydive right out of the 2009 Star Trek film, Rutherford and Boimler wearing their best Jake Sisko outfits, the return of Exocomp officer Peanut Hamper, Lt. Stevens running from Kukulkan, and more.
Entertainment Weekly also revealed this morning that a new alien named K’ranchwill be part of an upcoming Season 3 episode. From a new species called “Kromsapiods,” the fearsome-looking alien comes aboard the Cerritos to chase down Brad Boimler for an as-yet-unknown reason.
Along with the new trailer, Paramount+ has also revealed a series of character posters which give Ensigns Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimler (Jack Quaid), Rutherford (Eugene Cordero), and Tendi (Noel Wells) a taste of the Star Trek III: The Search for Spock treatment.
Star Trek: Lower Decks also stars Dawnn Lewis (Capt. Carol Freeman), Jerry O’Connell (Cmdr. Jack Ransom), Fred Tatasciore (Lt. Shaxs), and Gillian Vigman (Dr. T’Ana).
Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for its third season on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada on Thursday, August 25, and will follow on Amazon’s Prime Video service in many other international territories.
April’s bombshell announcement that the entire cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation would be returning for Star Trek: Picard set the fandom ablaze — and today we finally get our first glimpse of their looks in Picard’s third and final season.
Stars Patrick Stewart (Jean-Luc Picard) and Gates McFadden (Beverly Crusher) and Star Trek franchise boss Alex Kurtzman took the stage at San Diego Comic Con’s H today to preview the closing chapter of the Star Trek: Picard story, unveiling today’s long-awaited teaser to the packed Hall H crowd.
Along with this minute-long teaser, a series of character posters for eight of Season 3’s cast also beamed down with portraits of returning Picard leads Jean-Luc Picard (Stewart), Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), along with Beverly Crusher (McFadden), Will Riker (Jonathan Frakes), Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), and Worf (Michal Dorn).
STAR TREK: PICARD — Season 3 Character Posters
1 of 9
The teaser and posters reveal that Seven of Nine’s late-Season-2 field commission to Starfleet captaincy seems to have stuck, as she appears in command red for the final year of the series — and that along with Riker and Troi (seen in Picard Season 1), each returning character continues to serve in Starfleet’s ranks years after we last saw them in Star Trek: Nemesis.
Troi, who was seemingly retired in Season 1’s “Nepenthe,” joins her husband in a return to active duty, and promotions have been earned by Admiral (or Commodore) La Forge, and Worf — who is apparently NOT a captain, per a tweet by Terry Matalas — over the decades since their time on the Enterprise-E.
The gang’s all here — and all back in uniform. (Paramount+)
Notably missing from today’s reveals are Brent Spiner in today’s character spotlights; while the actor remains credited as a series regular for Star Trek: Picard Season 3, his specific role for the upcoming year has not been announced and seems to be a bit of a secret — likely to be revealed sooner to the show’s 2023 return.
Alex Kurtzman called Spiner’s role a “old new character,” perhaps referring to Alton Soong or some other Soong-ish character we’ve previously met. The villain of the season will be female, Kurtzman revealed — and while the Next Gen crew will be “scattered” around the galaxy, one driving storyline will be how Seven of Nine fits into active Starfleet service.
We’ll bring you more on the upcoming season as it breaks!
Star Trek: Picard is currently in post-production on its third and final season, set to debut in early 2023 on Paramount+ the United States, and on CTV Sci Fi Channel and Crave in Canada. Outside of North America, the series is available on Amazon’s Prime Video service in most international locations.

We’re just over a month out from the second big Star Trek-focused convention of 2022, as Creation Entertainment’s annual Las Vegas show is set to beam down to Bally’s Las Vegas Hotel & Casino in August.
As of this writing, Creation is advertising 130 guests for the event — and while a great number of those listed are one-off guest actors, panelists for Trek-related content, podcasters, or fans with creative projects, there is still a good representation of on-screen Star Trek stars scheduled to attend.
From the Kelvin Timeline films, Spock actor Zachary Quinto will be making his first appearance at the annual convention in several years — along with Keenser actor Deep Roy — while a fourth film for their Enterprise crew remains in production limbo following its announced 2023 release projection.
The modern era of Star Trek production will be well represented in Las Vegas, as Anson Mount (Pike) and Rebecca Romijn (Number One) from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) and John Noble (The Diviner) from Star Trek: Prodigy, Tawny Newsome from Star Trek: Lower Decks, Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Michelle Hurd (Raffi), Annie Wersching (Borg Queen), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Isa Briones (Soji), James Callis (Maurice Picard) from Star Trek: Picard will all be in attendance.
Star Trek: Discovery cast members Sonequa Martin-Green (Burnham), Anthony Rapp (Stamets), Blu del Barrio (Adira), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Doug Jones (Saru), Ian Alexander (Gray), Emily Coutts (Detmer), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys), Phumzile Sitole (Ndoye), Mary Wiseman (Tilly), and Wilson Cruz (Culber) will all be on hand throughout the event.
William Shatner (Kirk), George Takei (Sulu), and Walter Koenig (Chekov) lead the Original Series representation, while Gates McFadden (Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar), and John de Lancie (Q) will represent The Next Generation.
Deep Space Nine cast attendees include Nana Visitor (Kira), Andrew Robinson (Garak), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Casey Biggs (Damar), Chase Masterson (Leeta), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun), Max Grodenchik (Rom), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax), and Terry Farrell (Jadzia) — as Tim Russ (Tuvok), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robbie McNeill (Paris), Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Garrett Wang (Kim) represent Star Trek: Voyager, while John Billingsley (Phlox), Anthony Montgomery (Mayweather), Connor Trinneer (Tucker) covers the Enterprise era.
A great number of special events and panels are planned for the long Las Vegas weekend, including a Thursday night dinner and comedy show starring Star Trek: Discovery’s Tig Notaro (for those who purchased “Gold”-level tickets exclusively), as well as two Star Trek movie screenings for milestone anniversaries — Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for its 40th, and Star Trek: Nemesis which hits 20 years this winter.
Designer Geoffrey Mandel will take fans behind the scenes of Star Trek: Picard, presenting a look at the graphics work that has gone into the Paramount+ series, and he’ll also be exploring his well-loved Star Trek: Star Charts book which is still used as galactic map reference material in the modern-day Star Trek production offices.
A number of science-focused panels are also planned, including Star Trek’s Greatest Biological hits and Near-Misses with Dr. Mohamad Noor, The Real Astrometrics Lab with astrophysics expert Dr. Norbert Zacharias, Space Exploration with Arizona State University’s Professor David Williams, and many more.
Admission passes for Creation Entertainment’s 56-Year Mission: Las Vegas convention are still available in multiple tiers, along with their usual autograph and photo op tickets — if you’re heading to Las Vegas for the 2022 show, have a great time and we’ll see you there.
In addition, stick around to hear Abby’s theory about how the Gorn seen in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds may turn out to have a connection to Star Trek: Enteprrise tie-in, and Alex’s speculation about how fans may want to keep an eye out for Playmates Toys news coming out of San Diego Comic Con!

Beaming back to Paramount+ on Thursday, August 25, the 10-episode third season of Star Trek: Lower Decks picks up right where Season 2’s story left off: following the arrest of Captain Freeman following her alleged involvement in the destruction of Pakled Planet.
While no new trailer for the upcoming season was released today — we’re expecting that to come out of the July 23 Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic Con — the team at Paramount+ has just unveiled this new poster for the new year of stories.
Like the Lower Decks season key art designs from years past, this new Season 3 poster is a clear homage to the Star Trek III theatrical one-sheet, complete with blue-and-pink Rutherford face and the starship combat pictured near its top.
Returning for Season 3 are series regulars Tawny Newsome (Ens. Becket Mariner), Jack Quaid (Ens. Brad Boimler), Noel Wells (Ens. D’Vana Tendi), Eugene Cordero (Ens. Sam Rutherford), Dawnn Lewis (Capt.
In addition, stick around to hear Jenn’s theories about the impact that James T. Kirk may have on Strange New Worlds Season 2, and Alex’s theory that we’ll be back into another long marathon of weekly new Star Trek episodes much sooner than one might expect!

In advance of the summer of Season 3, the animated series released its first extended clip from the new season during last Thursday’s episode of The Ready Room, featuring a reunion between off-duty Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) after the Cerritos was impounded following the arrest of Captain Freeman last season.
Jump to timecode 30:55 for the new clip:
In addition, IDW Publishing announced that the Cerritos crew will also be taking the leap off TV screens this fall, as Star Trek: Lower Decks #1will debut the first tie-in comic series for the comedy this September.
Variant covers by artists Chris Fenoglio, Jay P. Fosgitt, and Phil Murphy.
Captain Carol Freeman leads the U.S.S. Cerritos crew on an expedition aimed to build bridges and advance Federation technology, but she and the away team quickly suspect that the planet and its people are not what they seem! Meanwhile, the crew in the lower decks take to the holodeck for some much-needed recreational time—until a bloodthirsty visitor decides to join in on their games. Can Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford save the ship from the likes of Dracula?
The three-issue miniseries will be helmed by writer Ryan North of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and artist Chris Fenoglio (Goosebumps and Star Wars Adventures), set during the events of the show’s first two seasons.
Finally, Star Trek: Lower Decks was also nominated by the Hollywood Critics Association as a contender in the Best Streaming Animated Series or TV Movie category, up against shows like Marvel Studios’ What If…? and Netflix’s Arcane.
The full list of nominees in this category are:
Arcane (Netflix)
Big Mouth (Netflix)
Central Park (Apple TV+)
Star Trek: Lower Decks (Paramount+)
Undone (Prime Video)
What If? (Disney+)
Here are the full list of nominees for the HCA awards; the winner will be announced at the Hollywood Critics’ Association awards ceremony on Sunday, August 14.
Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for its third season on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada later this year, and on Amazon’s Prime Video service in many other international territories. A specific air date has not yet been announced.
We’ve finally reached a hiatus in the months-long Paramount+ Star Trek marathon, and as the dust begins to settle following yesterday’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season finale, it’s time to catch you up on all the news that’s arrived out of subspace over the last few days.
SPOILERS FOR “A QUALITY OF MERCY” BELOW!

Introducing ‘The Port Galley’ Set
As part of the special coverage in this week’s episode of The Ready Room, host Wil Wheaton travelled to the Toronto-based Strange New Worlds production stages to interview star Ethan Peck (Spock) and showrunner Henry Alonso Myers — but the most interesting part of his visit is the unveiling of a brand-new Enterprise set we’ll come to see in the show’s upcoming second season.
Guided around “The Port Galley” by series production designer Jonathan Lee, The Ready Room spends nearly 8 minutes (start at timecode 22:30) exploring this new bar/lounge set which is essentially replacing the AR Wall-based crew lounge seen in the early episodes of Strange New Worlds Season 1, which was cumbersome to manage (though Lee doesn’t say that set won’t ever return).
STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS — 'The Port Galley' Set
1 of 10
The new location — which features cozy seating, a small performance stage, two video-display walls and a central bar — was desired to make things easier to film for the Strange New Worlds production crew, and was designed without windows to avoid having to worry about what’s happening outside the Enterprise when developing moments in the lounge.
Risk Is Our Business
‘Strange New Worlds’ co-showrunners Henry Alonso Myers (left) and Akiva Goldsman (right) with ‘Star Trek’ franchise boss Alex Kurtzman (center).
As our reviews mentioned a few times this season, despite the fun performances and mostly-enjoyable outings we’d hoped that Strange New Worlds might take some bigger storytelling chances over the last ten episodes — and co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman told The Hollywood Reporter that Season 2 will up the stakes in new ways.
“I feel the job of this show is to take big swings. And by the way, season one will look like a lot of bunting compared to season two. Star Trek is, in my view, most useful when it is emotionally connecting, which includes joy, wonder and sentiment. I think big swings are how you get there — and by the way, “big swings” just means “not as expected.”
A big swing can be small, it can be a small story. So, when we say big swings, I think we mean atypical. And that is our job right now. [Season 2 will be] bigger and better.”
More Kirk, More Engineers, and MOrtegas
Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk — in an alternate future.
Actor Paul Wesley talked with Variety about his continued participation as James T. Kirk in Strange New Worlds, after his debut appearance in “A Quality of Mercy.” While the Captain Kirk introduced in the season finale lived in an alternate 2266 future, Season 2’s Kirk will be contemporary to Captain Pike’s 2259 present.
“The ‘A Quality of Mercy’ Kirk] hasn’t been influenced by Spock, by Uhura. In many ways, he’s the same Kirk. But he’s not really the Kirk that we know, because he’s had a completely different life. So [the was] room in Season 1 for exploration of Kirk in a different way. It allowed me to put less pressure on myself, at least for that particular episode…. we didn’t explore Kirk as much as we will in Season 2.
Ultimately, ‘Strange New Worlds’ is pre- the Enterprise that we know, and I really think that that’s what this show is. Kirk is coming in, and he’s a part of that universe, but this really is Pike’s show in terms of him being the captain.
Ultimately, I don’t know what their plans are. All I can say is that I’m really enjoying being a part of this storyline, because it’s a Kirk that we’ve never seen. This is a younger Kirk. It’s before he was fully developed as a man.
I can’t talk about it too much, but man, I had such a blast on Season 2. The writing is so good. It’s so fun. Season 2 is where we get to really let loose and explore Kirk. I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
You can read the rest of Wesley’s comments on his portrayal of James Kirk, along with his experience landing the role and meeting William Shatner over at Variety.
Hemmer in ‘All Those Who Wander,’ and an accented red-shirted engineer in ‘A Quality of Mercy.
After the unexpected death of Aenar engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak) in “All Those Who Wander,” fans have already started speculating about who will lead the Enterprise maintenance team in Strange New Worlds Season 2 — especially after the voice-only Montgomery Scott cameo in “A Quality of Mercy,” set seven years after the current timeframe.
Strange New Worlds co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers told SyFy.com today that the show isn’t quite ready to bring the Scottish engineer into the series, but Season 2 will introduce a new Enterprise tech guru when the series returns next year.
“We will meet a new chief engineer — it’s not going to be Scotty. There will be a new character who I’m excited for you to meet, but I’m not going to tell you who it is. It’s going to be a very different person, a completely different type of engineer.”
Myers also reiterated previous statements that while Hemmer is gone — a plan for the Aenar set in motion even before the role was cast — actor Bruce Horak won’t be leaving the Strange New Worlds universe.
“For Hemmer, the intention of bringing in Hemmer was to bring in a character who would die. We knew that when Bruce Horak came in for his first audition. The challenge of doing all these legacy characters is everyone knows that none of them die, so we worked on how to make people care about the fate of the story.
One of our ideas was to make someone that we cared about die. And, for better or for worse, I feel like we didn’t know that Bruce would be so great. We didn’t know that he’d do it so well and we didn’t know it’d be so heartbreaking. Sometimes you’re fortunate and you find the perfect person for the perfect role and Bruce was that guy.
I will say that while Hemmer is dead, it’s not necessarily the last that we will see Bruce on our show.”
Myers also talked to /Film earlier this week, where he confirmed that fan-favorite Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia) will get her own focus episode in Strange New Worlds Season 2, after spending most of Season 1 adjacent to the other series regulars’ stories.
“Ortegas does have an episode in Season 2. We love Ortegas. One of the great things about Ortegas is that she fits so well into every story, because she’s always kind of in the center of it. You know what I mean?
I like to think of her as the person who gets to comment on every single story. Ortegas gets to do a bunch of things that she does in Season 2 that she didn’t get to do in Season 1, so I’ll leave it at that.”
Speaking separately to Inverse, Myers also noted that while there are still six-to-seven years until Captain Kirk is slated to take command of the Enterprise, there shouldn’t be an expectation that every season of Strange New Worlds will be equivalent to one year in space — though some more familiar faces from the future may not be that far away.
“We weren’t quite ready to cast our Scotty [for ‘A Quality of Mercy’]. That’s all I can say for now… we’re gonna meet some very interesting folks. We have seven years to play with here, and you know, there’s no reason that every season has to be a year. You could do a season that’s a week. You could do a season that’s six months.”
Anson Mount, Meet Admiral Pike
As part of a lengthy interview with Esquire, Strange New Worlds series lead Anson Mount spoke about his approach to playing the older Admiral Pike in “A Quality of Mercy,” a version of his character who travelled back in time from years (if not decades) into an alternate future.
“Mostly I didn’t want to overdo it, because if you talk to most people who are in their seventies or eighties, they will tell you that they still feel like they’re in their thirties, other than a few kinks here and there. For whatever reason, I’m what they call an outside-in actor.
I start with the body. I just wanted to find the places where the movement was not as easy and the voice was different. It was necessary to differentiate it a bit because I had scenes with myself. It was just necessary for the clarity of the scene.
I wanted a voice that sounded like it had given up a little bit after lots of emotional turmoil. So I thought, what would my voice sound like if I had spent a lot of time sobbing and screaming?”
Mount also shared his thoughts on Captain Pike’s outlook on life following his time travel adventure, as Strange New Worlds moves towards its second season.
“I would say he’s more resolute after the finale of Season One. He tried out the idea of having his cake and eating it too. It didn’t work, and strangely, when he realizes there’s no honorable way out, that’s a relief.
The older Pike made it very clear: you still have a choice. But to somebody like Pike, it isn’t a choice. So this is a choice that almost makes itself, and it is a tremendous relief. He doesn’t have to worry about it anymore.
His job now is to make every day count as much as possible. There’s a lot of freedom in that.”
