The second season of Star Trek: Lower Decks arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this week (watch for our review soon!), and on July 23 we expect to learn a lot more about when we’ll see the return of the USS Cerritos crew when the Star Trek Universe beams down to San Diego Comic Con next Saturday.

In advance of the summer of Season 3, the animated series released its first extended clip from the new season during last Thursday’s episode of The Ready Room, featuring a reunion between off-duty Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) and Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) after the Cerritos was impounded following the arrest of Captain Freeman last season.

Jump to timecode 30:55 for the new clip:

In addition, IDW Publishing announced that the Cerritos crew will also be taking the leap off TV screens this fall, as Star Trek: Lower Decks #1 will debut the first tie-in comic series for the comedy this September.

Variant covers by artists Chris Fenoglio, Jay P. Fosgitt, and Phil Murphy.

Captain Carol Freeman leads the U.S.S. Cerritos crew on an expedition aimed to build bridges and advance Federation technology, but she and the away team quickly suspect that the planet and its people are not what they seem! Meanwhile, the crew in the lower decks take to the holodeck for some much-needed recreational time—until a bloodthirsty visitor decides to join in on their games. Can Boimler, Mariner, Tendi, and Rutherford save the ship from the likes of Dracula?

The three-issue miniseries will be helmed by writer Ryan North of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and artist Chris Fenoglio (Goosebumps and Star Wars Adventures), set during the events of the show’s first two seasons.

Finally, Star Trek: Lower Decks was also nominated by the Hollywood Critics Association as a contender in the Best Streaming Animated Series or TV Movie category, up against shows like Marvel Studios’ What If…? and Netflix’s Arcane.

The full list of nominees in this category are:

    • Arcane (Netflix)
    • Big Mouth (Netflix)
    • Central Park (Apple TV+)
    • Star Trek: Lower Decks (Paramount+)
    • Undone (Prime Video)
    • What If? (Disney+)

Here are the full list of nominees for the HCA awards; the winner will be announced at the Hollywood Critics’ Association awards ceremony on Sunday, August 14.

Star Trek: Lower Decks will return for its third season on Paramount+ in the United States and Canada later this year, and on Amazon’s Prime Video service in many other international territories. A specific air date has not yet been announced.
