Exclusive – Mike & Denise Okuda: TNG Remastered Interview, Part 2

With just under two weeks left before the eagerly anticipated release of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 on Blu-Ray, I spoke with Star Trek legends and Consultants on the TNG: Remastered Project, Mike & Denise Okuda. Mike and Denise have always been wonderful in helping out TrekCore with information on the remastering project, so it was a pleasure to finally talk to them both and ask them some of the hotly contested questions which fans have been eagerly awaiting answers for.

TrekCore: There’s been a lot of talk about the presentation of an extended version of the Season 2 episode ‘The Measure of a Man‘ which is a popular fan favourite…

Denise: And ours too!

TrekCore: … Are you able to tell us anything about this? And could we maybe look forward to seeing future extended episodes?

Mike: With regard to ‘Measure of a Man’. That was kind of an unusual circumstance in that… first of all, we had a very, very early cut of the picture. It happened to be Melinda Snodgrass’ first professional tale. So when we found out there was an early version that was quite a bit longer than the final version, we were so excited about that! This was back in the day, I actually asked our friends in the editorial department for a copy of it and we gave that to her and she happened to hold onto it for all these years, because normally that sort of thing isn’t saved. When the Blu-Ray project started up, we emailed Melinda and said ‘Hey, is there any chance you still have that VHS tape?’ And she was so kind. She just mailed it back to us – that’s why we have it.

Denise: And everyone’s trying their darndest to make it happen. It’s kind of a crapshoot, but everybody is very enthusiastic that the process is going forward. Right now we can’t tell you if it’s going to be a happy ending, but everybody is very excited about the possibility and trying to make it happen.

TrekCore: Have you seen the extended edition yet?

Denise & Mike: Oh yes!

TrekCore: Could you tell me if it changes the episode significantly for you?

Mike: The plot itself does not change. What changes is more character development, more texture, there’s more emotion to it – you understand people’s motivations a little better.

Denise: The cutting is a little bit different. There [are] more wide shots than the final finish – the courtroom has more shots and closeups. So there is additional footage, it doesn’t change the story though.

Okona’s ship, the Erstwhile – Lost or Found?

TrekCore: About the project itself – I understand that some elements such as the original film of the ship Erstwhile in ‘The Outrageous Okona‘ were sadly lost. What happens in situations like this? Are you able to reconstruct these in CGI and I wonder if you could tell me a bit about the processes involved and the timescales and work involved in reconstructing little bits like this?

Mike: Each episode takes many months to reconstruct. As a result, the only way you can do that is – if you always have many episodes being worked on in parallel at different stages in the game. Wherever possible, the visual effects are being reconstructed from the original film and as far as the ship’s go – again, the vast majority of the ship shots do exist. When a piece of film is missing – on a case by case basis – you either reconstruct if from CG or do something else. I believe that initially there were some pieces of film of Okona’s ship that were not found…

Denise: I thought they were found? I don’t remember…

Mike: Yeah. Can we get back to you on that? I actually believe that the footage was found but I wouldn’t swear to it.

TrekCore: That would be great. I understand Doug Drexler was working on building a new model, but if it’s found obviously that’s better.

Mike: Well, initially there was concern and Doug started doing some work on it. But, I’m pretty sure that they did ultimately find it…

[Update: Mike has since been back in touch and confirmed that the Okona ship film was found. He states: “We checked with Doug and with others. They confirm that while there was concern over film for Okona’s ship, the film was eventually found, and Doug’s (excellent) CG model did not need to be used. Of course, Doug’s diligence in planning ahead was typical of the extraordinary dedication of everyone working on this project.”]

Denise: Yeah, I’m pretty sure too. I don’t remember… That happens though. I mean, you start finding the film and getting the correct case and so forth, and something may be missing. There’s a woman by the name of Sarah Paul… and Kiki Morris. It’s their job to go hunting and find the footage. Sometimes it’s in the box that’s marked, and sometimes it’s not and so – they have to go through… I mean, you can imagine the massive job. So initially sometimes, we’re missing something – but then, they find it. We’ve been just amazed and pleasantly surprised that most of the footage is eventually found.

TrekCore: We know from the sampler – ‘The Next Level’ – where there were a few seconds missing from ‘The Sins of the Father’ and I think you covered in the [Season 1] Bonus Features that you did find that film

Denise: Sarah found it!

TrekCore: I can imagine you must be holding your heart in your mouth when you realise this film has been misplaced, so it must be a relief when you find it…

Mike: Actually, given the thousands and thousands and thousands of individual pieces of film, we’re continually amazed that so little is missing! The folks at Paramount did a fantastic job of archiving the stuff. Kiki and Sarah are doing an amazing job of finding everything that’s needed.

TrekCore: I understand that you are both attending the Comic Con Panel on Thursday (July 12). Could you tell me a bit about that?

Denise: Yes! It’s going to be a lot of fun.

Mike: Basically, we have a panel with the principle people behind the actual restoration – plus filmmakers Roger Lay and Robert Meyer Burnett. We’ll be talking about the restoration process, the visual effects, the bonus features, the documentaries and just the fact that this is such a huge project and it’s the largest – as far as we know – the largest project of it’s kind that has ever been attempted.

TrekCore: I was about to say Mike – compared to other blu-ray TV show releases, this project is unprecedented in it’s scope. The budget that’s gone into it, the talent that’s involved behind the scenes and the publicity drive behind it… and now the comic con panel…

Mike: Well, CBS Paramount looked at Star Trek and they knew that there was a tremendous demand to see this in high definition. The problem of course that even though the show was shot on film, it was originally edited and all the video effects were done in standard definition. So, if we simply upscaled it to blu-ray, it just wouldn’t have looked very good. It looked great back in 1987 – it was cutting edge state of the art – but in order to bring it to today’s screens in HD, there was a huge amount of work required. Fortunately, CBS has faith in Star Trek and Star Trek’s standards and they said ‘OK, we’re going to take a gamble. We’re going to make this huge investment. We’re going to put a huge amount of effort and bring Star Trek back in a big way.’

TrekCore: I understand that this is the first time we’re going to be seeing Star Trek The Next Generation on the big screen with cinema screenings of two episodes – ‘Where No One Has Gone Before‘ and ‘Datalore’. What led to the choices of these episodes, and will you guys be getting your tickets?

Mike: Well of course we’re going to see them! Are you kidding!? Back in the day, we always used to lament that the set, the costumes and the models looked so good – it was a pity we couldn’t see it on the big screen – and now we’re going to get our wish! As far as the episodes go, we wanted an episode that embodied Gene Roddenberry’s vision of people boldly exploring and discovering the wonders of the unknown and for the second episode, Data is such a popular character and [Datalore] is such a pivotal episode to his character. It deals with a lot of his background, it introduces us to his evil twin and frankly Brent Spiner is kind of an undiscovered comic genius. He brings such delight to Data, to the evil Lore – such a delightful edge.

Fathom Events - TNG 25th Anniversary

TrekCore: I must ask on behalf of the fans, would there be any chance of seeing ‘The Best of Both Worlds‘ on the big screen?

Denise: Oh would we love to see that!!! I don’t know though…

Mike: The first season has been such a huge project… getting that out on blu-ray, and now we’re working on the second season. It’s so far down the road!

Denise: But, do you want to know something? You’re not the first person – nor will you be the last – to ask that question!

Mike: We would love to see it too.

TrekCore: If I could talk a bit about the bonus features on the Blu-Ray, because the DVD release in itself had a slew of bonus features which were fantastic in their own right. The Blu-Ray takes these to a whole new level with trailers, outtakes and these fantastic documentaries about the production of the series at the start. Can you tell me a bit about the development of these features and what goes into the construction of them and how they are formulated?

Mike: Well, CBS Home Entertainment very much wanted to create the definitive behind-the-scenes look at these things, so they brought on Roger Lay and Robert Meyer Burnett. Those guys have done so many interviews! From the very beginning of the process, everyone at CBS – David Grant [Vice President, Multimedia at CBS Television Distribution] and Ryan Adams [Director, Multimedia at CBS Television Distribution] – they’ve been very specifically looking for [material, and saying] ‘OK, if this stuff is suitable for behind-the-scenes, just make sure we know about it’.

Denise: At the beginning of the project, we screened a whole bunch of tests – lighting tests, costume tests, makeup tests – and it was kind of fun. So those are also being incorporated into the added material which I think is a lot of fun, and gives a glimpse into how the series… you know… the different revisions that needed to be made from the color of Data’s makeup, to the costumes, to the lighting on the bridge, the carpet… I mean, it kind of takes you behind the scenes to where it all began.

TrekCore: Your famous text commentaries which have been on previous DVDs have been a huge hit with the fans. You both have unprecedented access to all the minutiae behind the production of the movies and the shows. Are there any future plans to include your text commentaries and maybe even some audio commentaries on the Blu-Ray release.

Mike: We love doing those things, but I gotta tell you – at least for the time being – just our regular duties on the project are so overwhelming that we just couldn’t take on another project.

Denise: It was fun to do them – and maybe sometime in the future – but right now we’re just trying to do the remastering!

The remastered Minos from ‘The Arsenal of Freedom’

TrekCore: I know CBS recently very kindly provided us with a couple of shots of the remastered planet from ‘The Arsenal of Freedom’ – Minos…

Denise: Yes!

TrekCore: …It looks amazing compared to the old bitmap-planet version that there was in the [SD] copy. I know TNG often reused planets like this in different episodes. Do you plan on taking the same approach with the remastering – in reusing your remastered shot? Or, will you be introducing subtle variations?

Mike: This varies on a case-by-case basis. In some cases, there will be variations. In some cases, there will be straight reuses. In some cases, there will just be something new! It simply depends on what’s happening at that moment. There is a subsequent use of that exact green planet where if you first look at it, you go ‘It’s the exact same planet!’ [But] if you look at it a little more closely, you’ll notice there are some subtle differences. I didn’t see it when I first saw the show – I was thinking ‘It’s the same planet’. And then they pointed out the differences to me and I was ‘Oh my God!’ But that’s further down the road – it’s not a first season episode.

Exclusive! Planet Minos Revealed in HD!

We’ve got hold of a brand new exclusive today for everyone eagerly anticipating Season 1 of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-Ray. As a fan I’ve been intensely curious about how the remastering team will improve upon the infamously low-resolution “bitmap” planet shots from the first season, especially the notorious “Green Planet #1” which cropped up first in the episode as Angel One in “Angel One“, only to reoccur in “The Arsenal of Freedom” as Minos, “The Royale” as Theta 116 VII and in “Sarek” as Legara IV.

Today TrekCore can exclusively reveal the transformation done by the remastering team on one of these appearances – the orbital shot of the Enterprise approaching Minos in Season 1’s “The Arsenal of Freedom“.

The shear contrast in these two shots is simply mind-blowing. Perhaps it is worth pointing out that this beautiful comparison illustrates yet again the team’s shear determination to remain as faithful to the original show as possible. The remastered Minos uses the same green-white colour, and the areas of continents/cloud cover seem to be roughly in agreement with the original… However, gone are the awful jagged-edges around the Enterprise, a result of compositing the original orbital shot of the ship onto the planet background. The planet truly comes alive in the remastered shot – we can see variations in the colour of the continents indicating mountain ranges, topped by realistic cloud cover and all surrounded by a new halo of an atmosphere! It remains to be seen whether or not there will be any differences with the stock shot of this planet in the other three episodes in which it appears.

But wait! There’s More!! We couldn’t just bring you one new remastered shot – so here’s another brand new Exclusive to Trekcore remastered shot, this time from the episode “Where No One Has Gone Before“, part of an intense scene on the bridge where the crew are confronting Kosinski about his modifications to the warp drive:

The comparison illustrates yet again the night-and-day difference between the original SD version and the new HD master. I never get bored of seeing these shots! “Where No One Has Gone Before” always came across to me as incredibly over-exposed and bright. This has clearly been corrected in the remastered edition – with natural colours and flesh tones coming through just beautifully.

Stay tuned to TrekCore for more exclusives as we approach the release date of Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 1 Blu-Ray set!

Missing footage from ‘Sins of the Father’ found

Reports have surfaced that the missing 13 seconds of original film elements from Season 3’s “Sins of the Father” has now been located. We originally reported on the missing footage back in November when the remastering team were forced to use upconverted SD material to fill the void in the episode which was featured on January’s “Next Level” sampler release.

Answering a question on his Facebook page, Robert Meyer Burnett (responsible for creating documentaries on the 1st Season TNG Blu Ray set) has stated that the remastering team have now tracked down the missing elements which will be edited back into the episode for the release of the Season 3 Blu-Ray boxset. According to Burnett,

“It was indeed found and replaced. For the season three box set, SINS will be intact. We deal with this in a documentary for Season One.”

This is indeed excellent news – we remain hopeful that any further missing elements will have a minimal impact on this project. We have been unable to validate Burnett’s statements with CBS, but it would seem as though they are credible given the source.

We also have word that CBS are starting to prepare for pre-release publicity for the first season, so expect official news to start emerging soon!
