Trek Comics Review: “Starfleet Academy #4”

Suit up, cadets! We warp back to San Francisco in the fourth chapter of IDW Publishing’s Starfleet Academy comic miniseries!

sta4-covers

There are a trio of covers to collect for the next issue in the series:

Order Star Trek:
Starfleet Academy #4

  • The regular cover, by Derek Charm, is the first in a trio to place in a tractor beam and haul into your collection. Vel, T’laan, Grace, and Shen are running away from a huge slug-like monster that’s opened its maw to devour them. In the backdrop of space, an image of Spock watches on the transpiring events.I like the design of the creature, the poses of the characters as they take flight, and the coloring is also strong.
  • Robert Wilson IV has illustrated the subscription cover. This is an oddly constructed frontpiece of the crew’s shuttle zipping through space cut by three images of the crew members; T’laan in a tiny piece of the bottom left, Grace in the middle on the shuttle’s controls, and a shocked Shev on the right. The line work is really thick, making the images really blocky. The coloring is also odd, with a dull pink used behind the characters and a dull blue-white for the ship. This looks rushed.
  • The retailer incentive cover is a gorgeous work by David Malan. This features a gigantic bust of Uhura looking down. To her immediate right is a three quarters view of Kirk, while a three quarters view of Spock is on her left. She’s gazing down at silhouettes of the new characters of this series, who are looking at the sites that surround Starfleet Academy. Perfect in every possible way.

sf4-story

This penultimate installment, written by Mike Johnson and Ryan Parrot, opens with the group on a planet to scan and analyze its atmospheric composition.

Naturally, Vel touches the plant life and is given a mild reprimand for doing so. Shev is impatient to get back to the shuttle: they’re in the middle of the standings for the competition. While Lucia and Shev argue, T’laan is consumed by the findings on her tricorder. Instead, all three should have been paying attention to Vel’s who’s been trying to tell them something. She finally grabs Grace by the shoulder and says, “I am going to run away now.”

They turn to see the giant killer space-worm from the regular cover rear up. They take off running for the shuttle, save Shev who hold his ground with his phaser so the others may escape. The worm’s not effected by the energy blasts, so the Andorian runs to the high ground to avoid its bite. Unfortunately the creature follows.

This exciting opening concludes smoothly and then returns to the recent past as Uhura is in Admiral Marcus’s office. He’s going to expel her for her deeds from last issue, but someone saves her, concluding in fantastic fashion on Page 15. In the present, the crew needs to find a way to get their shuttle to move faster and Grace may have a solution. However, it takes them some place very unexpected.

This was a fun story full of action, romance, and mystery.

sfa4-art

Derek Charm continues his winning run as illustrator and colorist on this series. One might think he or she is looking at a Truffula tree in the first panel until Vel touches the plant. The design of the team’s suits are great and the coloring of them superior.

The space creature they encounter harkens to classic science fiction monsters of the 1950s without being cheesy. The blue and violet skies of the opening world are beautiful.

The five pages in the past have the look of lost scenes from Into Darkness, with Charm moving his point of view around like a cinematographer. The most impressive page is 15 where the reader is slowly moved closer to the characters, as the drama increases, until pulled back for an emotional send off. I’m not a fan of these scenes in any Trek show or film, but Charm aces this.

The final three pages are full of dramatic irony, as the readers knows what’s going on, while the characters do not. The coloring in the last panels on Pages 18 and 19 are beautiful, and the final panel of the issue is a great jaw dropper.

sfa4-letters

The talented twosome of Neil Uyetake and Tom B. Long create the captain’s log, dialogue, and transmissions (using the same font), Vel’s speech, sounds, and computer text. I would rather there be a specific font for the logs and transmissions, rather than have them differed by the shape and color of their balloons.

However, the sounds are outstanding, with the phaser blasts and explosions excellent.

No, This Is NOT An Official STAR TREK 2017 Poster

There have been a flurry of reports today about some mysterious artwork, which is supposedly a “teaser poster” for next year’s CBS All Access Star Trek revival — so we looked into this graphic which originated over at Empire Online and has spread like wildfire across the web:

not-trek-2017-poster

We have confirmed that this is not an official Trek 2017 promotional piece, and we have also learned that there have not been any official art pieces yet created for next year’s streaming series.

The truth behind this graphic is much less exciting; it’s simply a sample sales graphic created over at CBS… which happened to get its photo taken.

Sorry to be a downer on this one! While we’re as excited as you are for next year’s show, it seems that we’ll need to wait a bit longer for any official designs to come from CBS.

Justin Lin Works 16 Hours a Day on STAR TREK BEYOND

Last week, entertainment writer Logan Hill spoke to the Sitting Around Talking Movies podcast about his recent visit into the STAR TREK BEYOND editing offices, where he met with director Justin Lin and saw some of the work the editing team is doing on the upcoming film.

STAR TREK: THE ANIMATED SERIES is Coming to Blu-ray

For years, people have been talking about bringing the lonely Star Trek: The Animated Series to high-definition Blu-ray following its sister series’ upgrade to HD back in 2009 – and we were even hearing rumblings about the show’s future back in 2013 when the Next Generation remastering project was in full swing.

4K Remaster of STAR TREK II Confirmed for 2016

Since the first Star Trek movie Blu-ray releases in 2009, the same ten discs have been released over and over in different packages. The classic Trek films in one set, the Next Generation movies in another; all ten films in one box, every movie separately… even various combinations of two and three films together.

After yet another set of reissued 2009 discs were announced for February, we thought that Paramount had decided once again to ignore the original ten films, leaving the hopes of a sorely-needed remastering project in the dust. Even with the news that Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was being revisited for 4K UHD, the fate of the other nine movies was left hanging… until today.

Bill Hunt of The Digital Bits is now reporting that Paramount is not only getting The Wrath of Khan ready for a 4K-quality Blu-ray remaster (in both the theatrical and director’s cuts) — though a UHD 4K disc release is still up the air — but aside from the JJ Abrams films, and a few planned combo packs featuring possible new content, none of the other nine original films are getting new transfers. That means that for everything else, the 2009 Blu-rays are the best we’ll see for the foreseeable future.

It’s an extremely disappointing report to hear, with the nature of the picture quality on the rest of the earlier films — but rest assured we’ll be bringing you all the information we can on the Wrath of Khan remaster once it becomes available.

STAR TREK BEYOND Reshoot Week Wraps Up

5150 Action, the stunt coordination team working on STAR TREK BEYOND, detailed the last day of the additional photography reshoots scheduled for this week on social media tonight, and photos from passersby have spotted both Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine and director Justin Lin back on a small set in Los Angeles.

Captain Kirk actor Chris Pine was spotted with director Justin Lin on a small greenscreen setup at the Manhattan Beach Studios location, for some minor reshoot takes.

Since preshoot preparations with Sofia Boutella nearly two months before the start of filming in June 2015, 51510 has been tweeting their journey aboard the BEYOND bandwagon:

And of course, they followed BEYOND to Dubai for some of the larger action sequences we documented in October. Here, Mike Gunther, the founder/owner of 5150 Action, works alongside director Justin Lin.

The March reshoots were expected to be a short-lived process, and it seems that they only lasted a week – which should put those of you worried that this was some major overhaul of the film at ease.

While five days is enough to film a few scenes, including whatever Zoe SaldanaJoe Taslim, and Shohreh Aghdashloo were needed for, it’s hardly enough to reshape four months of principal photography.

Photos From a 2017 STAR TREK Promo?

We’re ten months away from the launch of the 2017 Star Trek show on CBS All Access, but a first batch of preliminary photos have already leaked out from the production floor as CBS beings to lay the groundwork for the upcoming series.

Zoe Saldana Back on Set for STAR TREK BEYOND Shoots

As we reported late last week, the production team is back at work for additional STAR TREK BEYOND filming, and today both actor Joe Taslim and Uhura actress Zoe Saldana returned to the set in Los Angeles for some more time in front of the cameras.

Like with Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, and the other cast we’ve seen over the past nine months of filming, Saldana is also sporting one of the new uniforms worn by the Enterprise crew – and as we reported back in the fall, the lieutenant has a rank braid back on her sleeve.

We’ve known about the rank braid returning to the female uniform design – something long wished for by fans – since the Dubai shoots back in October, where local photography was able to detail the wrist stripe.

We first spotted the female rank insignia during the location shoots in Dubai.

Like the men of the Enterprise, the new ladies’ uniform also sports the higher collar and extended sleeves, with cuffs as well. From the BEYOND trailer, we can also see the expert tailoring needed to create the form-fitting look.

We’ll keep watch for other updates from the second round of photography on the film and be sure to keep you all updated with any new information!
