New Posters Debut for TREK 2017 and STAR TREK BEYOND

Last fall, Paramount Pictures put up the first teaser poster for STAR TREK BEYOND – a placeholder design using the 2009 film’s photos – at the MIPCOM Entertainment Expo in Cannes, and it seems that CBS/Paramount has continued that trend for both the upcoming film and next year’s new Star Trek television show as well at the MIP TV international television trade show.

First up is this square presentation of the STAR TREK BEYOND key title art, which also sports the “Star Trek 50” logo we’ve been talking about since our exclusive debut last spring. Nothing really new to see here, but this is the first combination of those two graphic elements we’ve seen.

Additionally, paired with CBS’s other premium television projects, this large poster for the 2017 Star Trek show vividly announces the return to the small screen, in a design reminiscent of that early sales graphic we saw two weeks ago. Again, there’s no spoilers or hints to the direction of the series, but as CBS president Les Moonves detailed earlier this year, it’s a big draw for the international market.

New STAR TREK TOS, TNG Box Sets Coming in June

Back in November, CBS Home Entertainment released a three-season repackage of the remastered Star Trek: The Original Series on DVD, and this week they’ve announced a new series of releases coming this June for TOS on Blu-ray, as well as box sets for Star Trek: The Next Generation on DVD and Blu-ray as well.

tos-blu-box

The Blu-ray collection for Star Trek: The Original Series contains all twenty discs from the 2009 high-definition release in one box, with all of the bonus material and other features included. Like the first releases, the discs contain both the “classic” and “remastered” visual effects which can be each viewed independently. The set is projected for sale at $99.99.

Star Trek: The Next Generation gets a fourth-round DVD release in this new box set. We’ve confirmed that these are not, as some have hoped, a DVD release of the remastered edition of the series, but this collection features the same 48-disc standard-definition masters as the original 2002 arrival.

In addition, this set also leaves out the 2007 bonus disc contained in the Twentieth Anniversary box set.

Finally, the one thing many fans in North American have been waiting for: an all-in-one collection of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray. While we’ve been touting availability (and economic savings) of the region-free UK box set that’s been available since December 2014, we know there are those of you who didn’t want to import the collection from overseas.

This 48-disc set will have all the discs that were released as part of the individual season sets, but will not feature the Season 3 visual effects feature exclusive to Best Buy, nor will it contain the five standalone discs (“The Best of Both Worlds,” “Redemption,” “Unification,” “Chain of Command,” or “All Good Things…”) or their respective bonus material. The set will retail at suggested price of $208.99.

Preorders aren’t available yet, but we’ll update this post once they’re live.

With yet another release of The Next Generation on DVD following just two years after the last one – and with a low price point of just $144.99 (compared to earlier editions, anyhow) – it remains odd that both Deep Space Nine (retailing on Amazon for over $500) and Voyager (at around $300 for the series) have never seen a second round on DVD since their original sale dates in 2003 and 2004.

Unfortunately, we’ve confirmed that right now, there are no plans for new DVD box sets for the two spin-off series, though as usual, we’ve been told that sales of these new June collections may determine if either show might get another chance on DVD. At this point, that would be the only hope to see the shows on store shelves again, as their upgrade to HD is now nothing more than a wish list item.

We’ll be sure to keep you all posted as we learn more about these releases, the upcoming 4K remaster of The Wrath of Khan, and the Blu-ray upgrade for The Animated Series coming later this year.

REVIEW: The Original Series — “The Latter Fire”

latter-fireThe five-year mission of the Starship Enterprise has brought the vessel and her crew to the forefront of an important first contact situation.

Under the command of Captain James T. Kirk, the ship is heading to the planet Syhaar Prime in the Beta Quadrant—the home world of an alien civilization preparing to take its first steps on to the galactic stage.

One year earlier, the Enterprise came across a badly damaged Syhaari explorer vessel drifting in deep space. In collaboration with the explorer’s captain, Kirk and his crew were able to restore the ship to full function and send it on its way. And now, as the Syhaari display rapid technological advances made over the past year, hard questions must be asked.

Did the Enterprise crew leak advanced technology or information to the Syhaari during their first encounter, in total violation of the Prime Directive?

James Swallow is an author who really gets Star Trek. Reading his stories make you appreciate the message behind some of the best tales that the Trek franchise has to offer — and The Latter Fire is certainly no exception.

Fear is a consuming and pervasive force in our world. Fear of that which is different lies at the heart of countless misunderstandings and conflicts. In The Latter Fire, this idea is explored through a number of interactions throughout the story. The primary conflict in the story stems from an encounter between Syhaari explorers and an alien race called the Breg’hel.

Tormid, the captain of a Syhaari ship, commits atrocities against the Breg’hel, murdering the entire complement of a Breg’hel vessel. Fearing the unknown, he panicked and let his base emotions take hold.

Understandably, the Breg’hel were furious. Due to the interconnected nature of their species, the Breg’hel couldn’t conceive that the Syhaari weren’t all responsible for the death of their people. Once again, a huge misunderstanding leads to conflict, predicated mainly on fear. I found this aspect of the story to be very timely, given what is happening in politics and world affairs today. Fear is behind so much of what we do and think that it leads to rash decisions and poor judgement on the part of decision makers, law makers, and the general public.

Preconceived notions and prejudice both play a major role in the story as well. This idea plays out in the novel through a number of situations, including the Federation Diplomatic Corps and Ambassador Xuur’s preconception of Kirk and what he stands for. The aforementioned Breg’hel and their notion of the nature of the Syhaari could also be seen as a preconception that leads to misunderstanding.

amoebaThe “Leviathan” is reminiscent of the giant space amoeba from “The Immunity Syndrome.”

Until people have open minds and truly aim to learn about their neighbours and people with different ideas and ways of life, there will always be conflict. A theme in this story seems to be “challenge your preconceptions or they will challenge you.”

Another thing that James Swallow does really well is world-building. In The Latter Fire, this talent particularly shines as he creates two fascinating cultures, along with a giant space-faring leviathan creature. The novel is filled with very Original Series ideas, and was very reminiscent of some of the big spectacles in that series.

Final thoughts:

Communication, cooperation, and friendship; it is these ideals that Star Trek says should guide humanity into the stars. Fundamentally, The Latter Fire is about those ideas. It is Star Trek in the truest sense, and James Swallow captures the essence of “Roddenberry’s philosophy,” as it has become known.
