Terrestrial Team-Up in New STAR TREK BEYOND Photo

Paramount has released a new STAR TREK BEYOND photo to Empire Online today, featuring three of the upcoming film’s stars in a precarious situation.

While we’ve seen these characters in other official stills and in December’s teaser trailer, this is our first look at all three together on the surface of the planet central to the BEYOND story.

Since Spock is wearing his USS Franklin jacket in this image, it seems reasonable to concluded that this grouping takes place after the crew has convened at the new vessel, after the escape and landing from the downed Enterprise.

We’ll be sure to update our STAR TREK BEYOND image gallery with a high-quality version of this photo as soon as it’s been released.

Trek Comics Review #56: “Legacy of Spock, Part 2”

It’s this month’s issue of IDW Publishing’s Star Trek comic series: the second installment of “Legacy of Spock,” the next adventure in the new Five Year Mission.

trek56-covers

There’s three choices of comic covers to pick from this month:

Order Star Trek #56

  • The regular cover hails from interior artist Tony Shasteen. It’s a shot of the original Spock, Kirk, and McCoy facing the reader with the saucer section of the Enterprise behind them. The likenesses of the characters are good, but the coloring is too pale. All the reflections, on the saucer and the characters, make it difficult to find a focus.
  • John Watson takes a unique spin on the subscription cover. This is a beautiful rendering of The Girl with the Silver Earpiece. I don’t think Vermeer would have imagined that his painting would receive a re-imagining 351 years after its creation. Watson’s done a great job, even mirroring the expression of the original model onto Zoe Saldana’s face.
  • The retailer exclusive cover can only be found at the EMP Museum in Seattle, Washington. Why there? The Experience Music Project also houses the Icons of Science Fiction, featuring memorabilia from classic sci-fi films and shows. This cover by Jeffrey Vergee is a terrific pop presentation.Standing atop the saucer section of the Enterprise, Kirk is flanked by young and old versions of Spock. Bold blue and yellow stripes of lateral energy project behind the characters. The design is cool and the coloring strong. This is the cover to seek out.

trek56-story

The second chapter of Mike Johnson’s Legacy of Spock opens just after the events of the classic Star Trek episode “Amok Time.” Before the Enterprise takes its leave of Vulcan, Kirk asks his first officer if he’d like to spend more time at home. Spock responds, “Humans’ use of the word ‘home’ carries with it a sentimental meaning to which Vulcans are immune. I was born on Vulcan, yes. But I have no emotional attachment to it.”

The ship breaks orbit and the story transitions to the present, where Spock has been asked to leave the Vulcan orbital ship, as the elders consider him partially responsible for their homeworld’s destruction. His father escorts him from the ship and their parting is an emotional one, at least for one of them. Spock is then transported to a destination that surprises the Starfleet captain, but will be very familiar to Trek fans: Deep Space Station K-7.

Before Spock encounters a famous character, Johnson moves the story to the Romulan border of the Neutral Zone, where a Romulan warship catches a Klingon ship with two crew members that will move the story into deadly territory.

Any scene with Spock is fantastic. Watching him relive the past was just awesome. Listening to his thoughts on the differences he encounters in this new universe creates an undeniable sense of melancholy. Beginning on Page 10 Spock finds whom he’s been looking for. The scenes between the character and Spock are great because the Vulcan knows everything about this man, so there’s no way this individual can take advantage of him.

Pages 9 and 13 are just a bore, and that’s a shame because they’re the antagonists of this story. Fans dealt with this threat in a film and in previous IDW comics. This horse has been beaten to death. Loving Spock, but tired of another trip to this well.

trek56-art

Tony Shasteen’s artwork continues to have outstanding character work. His illustrations on the first two pages and on 7 and 8 are wonderful. Old Spock looks great as he makes his way through several locations, with his slight smile on 8 infectious.

The slight changes done to the familiar character on 10 are excellent — he retains just enough of this past look to create recognition in readers, but has just enough variation in him to be new. Several alien characters populate K-7 and they are strange and exotic. The best looking characters of the book are the pair of originals that appear on Pages 5 and 6; I would love to see more of this pair.

The backgrounds, once again, pull Shasteen’s character work down. This is doubly surprising this issue because the work on the interiors on Page 4 are clean and sharp; they’re not given the blurry treatment that follows. Also on this page is the refashioned K-7 which looks fantastic.

This page is followed with the interiors of a different ship which contains a great looking chair for the captain, but only rudimentary shapes for a crew member’s station and a muddled screen that contains a perfectly focused image. The backgrounds only worsen at the new setting that begins on 14; they’re made to look blurry. Why this is done escapes me.

trek56-colors

The work by Davide Mastrolonardo starts with bright colors and begin to consecutively dim starting on Page 9. Before this, the colors of the classic series bring some familiar warmth to the characters, and Page 5 uses a specific color to great effect for an iconic Trek race.

Starting on 9 espionage begins and the colors might be darkened to enhance the secretive nature of the story, but it never recovers. Worse, the backgrounds, if there are any, are continually paled behind the characters. This filtering effect is bizarre.

trek56-letters

This issue introduces AndWorld Design to lettering Star Trek comics. They create narration, dialogue, scene settings, whispers (all four are the same font), transmissions, yells, and the tease for next issue.

It’s disappointing to see colors used to differentiate the first four types of text, rather than have them employ a unique design.

Pegg Says BEYOND Doesn’t End a STAR TREK Trilogy

While some Star Trek fans have openly stated their wish that STAR TREK BEYOND might be the last entry in the “Abramsverse” Trek universe, co-writer (and co-star) Simon Pegg told Movies.com how this summer’s big-screen adventure isn’t planned as this crew’s closing chapter at last week’s CinemaCon event:

We’ve known for nearly a year now that lead stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are under contract for a potential TREK 4 should Paramount move forward with another sequel – something that may be more likely than some may think now that they’ve got some more cash coming in.

Alibaba Pictures announced today that along with other Paramount endeavors, the Chinese film company will be investing an unspecified amount of many towards the costs of the STAR TREK BEYOND production budget, and confirmed that BEYOND will be imported into that nation’s notoriously particular entertainment slate later this year.

Per the LA Times:

After dipping its toe in Hollywood waters by putting money into “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” last year, China’s Alibaba Pictures said Monday it is investing in two more Paramount Pictures films: “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” and “Star Trek Beyond.”

The companies did not reveal how much Alibaba would invest in the productions…. Alibaba indicated both films have received government approval to be imported into China under the country’s quota system and would be released on the mainland in the second half of the year.

“Star Trek Into Darkness” grossed $57 million in China in 2013, about 12% of its worldwide haul of $467 million.

For those of you setting your sights on the domestic box office figures to tell the whole tale of how STAR TREK BEYOND performs this summer… don’t count it out after opening weekend.

New STAR TREK BEYOND Title Graphic Revealed?

To date, there’s only been one official design of the STAR TREK BEYOND title artwork used so far, and we’ve got it posted right here at the top of this article.

From the first teaser trailer released back in December, to the various preliminary poster designs featured at last week’s CinemaCon event in Las Vegas, the classic Trek font has been used consistently to brand this July’s upcoming film.  The official film website duplicates the same graphic seen above.

This week, however, a glimpse of what may be the in-movie STAR TREK BEYOND title card may have made its way onto the web, by way of the Burbank-based Digital Vortechs post-production house.

Digital Vortechs, a high-end editing services company that has worked with the post-production teams of such recent blockbusters as Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Hateful Eight, and The Martian — as well as Bad Robot’s first Star Trek film in 2009, plus many Bad Robot television productions — posted the following photo to their social media channels Thursday night:

https://www.instagram.com/p/BEMGb0NDNun/

You may be asking why our speculation leads us to believe that this frame may be from the actual BEYOND film, and not from the next trailer coming in May: because it seems very unusual that the logo used for the film in marketing is going to change with such a short time left in the promotional window ahead of the movie’s release. The first trailer was put together by entertainment marketing company AV Squad, and our expectation that the same group (or one of a similar nature) will be completing the May 20 trailer.

Additionally, the likelihood that the film’s usage of the STAR TREK BEYOND wordmark is going to be a new design is extremely high. Just looking at the past several Trek films – and most films at large – the in-film title card is quite often different from the text seen in promotional trailers (which tends to remain consistent for brand-awareness purposes).

Here are just a few example comparison from the last year:

[metaslider id=23018]

Of course, we freely admit that our speculation could end up being totally incorrect, and this is just a fancy placeholder for use at the Digital Vortechs facility with no relation to the next trailer or final film at all — but we’ll find out soon enough.

Star Trek TNG Remastered: “Homeward” HD Comparison

Worf’s half-brother Nikolai has a secret plan to save a primitive civilization from a worldwide catastrophe that will mean their extinction — but when he involves the Enterprise crew against their will, it’s up to Worf to keep the secrets of the 24th Century hidden from the low-tech natives!

In STAR TREK BEYOND, Idris Elba Hates the Federation

STAR TREK BEYOND guest actor Idris Elba has a new interview out today with Entertainment Weekly, where he dives a little bit more into the “groundbreaking” role he’s playing in this summer’s Trek adventure.

Per EW’s interview with the British actor:

He has a real beef with what the Enterprise stands for. Krall’s a character who’s deeply steeped in hatred — in my opinion, a well-earned hatred — for the Federation. It felt quite political. There’s a relatability to what’s happening in our world. Not everybody’s happy with what everybody calls the good guys.

There’s some history that we explore, to understand why he feels the frontier needs to “push back.” There’s definitely an opposing argument to the good that the Federation think they do. There are purists that believe in independence, and believe that we’re all made differently for a reason, and will fight tooth and nail to defend that.

Krall is predatory. He’s not one for big speeches. He is one for going to get what he wants. If that means having to do it himself, outside of his army, he is not afraid to do that.

Elba also talks about his heavy makeup requirements for the alien role, something we first covered back in November:

Typically, my day would start at 4:15 in the morning. I’d be in the chair until around 7:30, shoot about 8:30. Shot ‘til around 9 at night, maybe later. Get home, unwind, get to sleep, and then wake up in the morning and do the whole thing again. It was definitely an extensive process. I learned so much about working with prosthetics, and how that can influence the performance. I’m claustrophobic by the way; I don’t like rubber masks on my face.

STAR TREK BEYOND Fan Event Brings Trailer on May 20

As we told you the other day, the wait for the next STAR TREK BEYOND trailer will need to last a few more weeks, and now we know exactly when it’s coming: May 20.

Announced today by Paramount Pictures, director Justin Lin will be hosting a “first-ever fan event” on the Paramount lot, and will include special surprises along with a live-streamed Q&A session with the BEYOND cast and crew.

Here’s the news release:

HOLLYWOOD, CA (April 14, 2016) – “Star Trek Beyond” director Justin Lin announced today a first-ever fan event to take place on May 20 in celebration of the series’ milestone 50th Anniversary this year and the film’s release this summer.

The one-time only special event, taking place at the historic Paramount Pictures studio lot, will include the premiere of the newest “Star Trek Beyond” trailer, an exclusive first-look of never before seen footage from the upcoming film, a Q&A with Lin and the cast and crew, special guests appearances, and other surprises. The Q&A will be streamed via Facebook Live.

Said Justin Lin, “As a lifelong fan of Trek, we wanted to do something special for the fans and we couldn’t think of a better way to do that than creating an event dedicated to them in the year that we also come together to celebrate the series’ amazing 50th year.”

No word yet on how these lucky fans will make their way into this event, but those details are surely coming along soon.
