STAR TREK BEYOND stars Karl Urban, Chris Pine, and Simon Pegg got to help debut their new film at the White House this afternoon to a group of veterans and active service members – with the help of First Lady Michelle Obama.
The presentation was part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, started by Obama and Dr. Jill Biden in 2011, which works “hand in hand with the public and private sectors to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the tools they need to succeed throughout their lives.”
After the actors geeked out a bit about being at the White House, they spoke about their involvement (via Trek) with the armed forces and families of veterans and active duty military, they introduced Michelle Obama who spoke for a few minutes to the audience.
Having you [veterans] here for this movie – which is cool, because it’s not out yet, right? Nobody else is seeing this – this is really a special thing. So you have to commit to not sharing the plotline! You can’t give anything away, okay? But you should lord it over your friends and family.
But this is just a small but hopefully special way that we can show you how much we here at the White House and how many people, including all of the creators and the stars of “Star Trek,” how cool they think you all are. And this isn’t just here – this is everywhere around the country and, quite frankly, around the world.
We can’t say it lough enough, but hopefully a cool movie in the White House is a good beginning.
Jokingly, the First Lady left the event flashing a pair of Vulcan salutes, and wished the audience well by proclaiming, “May the Force be with you!”
Heading out to tomorrow’s Kelvin Timeline IMAX / large-format movie marathon, culminating in an early showing of STAR TREK BEYOND? You can look forward to some exclusive artwork from Gallery 1988 artists!
Collider released an early look at the two “full size” posters today: the wide BEYOND poster for IMAX screenings is by artist Matt Taylor, and the tall Enterprise poster (for other large-format theaters) is from Jeffrey Everett.
These two designs are only available at tomorrow’s three-movie event!
In addition, Slashfilm revealed last night that opening-weekend showings of STAR TREK BEYOND in other 3D venues will also be your chance to score variants of these posters around the USA!

At the end of a crazy day in Star Trek news, Paramount and director Justin Lin decided to throw one more new trailer for STAR TREK BEYOND at us to kick off release week!
In addition to this new look at the film, with lots more new footage inside, another brief featurette focused on the director himself arrived this afternoon, showcasing Lin both on-set and in an interview setting – and of course, even MORE new BEYOND footage.

Paramount has officially announced that the Kelvin Timeline will continue in STAR TREK 4 (official title yet to be determined), which will bring back Thor actor Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk in the planned sequel.
J.J. Abrams revealed the scoop to Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz last week, who nearly has a stroke when he hears the news:

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 18, 2016) – Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage.
In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.
Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “STAR TREK,” will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.
The remaining cast is expected to return.
J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.
We’ve known for a year that both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have been contracted for a fourth film, and in J.J. Abrams’ recent comments about a possible sequel, he confirmed that Anton Yelchin’s Chekov would not be recast after the actor’s unexpected death.

Streaming giant Netflix has announced today that outside of North America, they will be the exclusive carrier of next year’s STAR TREK television revival, which will be exclusive to CBS All Access in the USA.
Netflix to Beam New CBS “Star Trek” Television Series in 188 Countries Around the World
Each Episode of the Highly Anticipated New Series to be Available to Netflix Members Exclusively in All Licensed Territories Within 24 Hours of the U.S. Premiere on CBSLOS ANGELES and AMSTERDAM– July 18, 2016 – Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new “Star Trek” television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of “Star Trek” in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.
Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic “Star Trek” television library – including “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Enterprise” will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.
The all-new “Star Trek” will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.

The show will be available outside of North America within 24 hours of each episode’s American release, which should dramatically reduce international piracy issues that a delayed rollout would likely create.
In addition, this will save any existing international Netflix subscriber from having to pay any new costs to view the show – unlike fans in the United States, which will need to pay teh $5.99 monthly subscription to CBS All Access.
In Canada, the series will be available via Space, and streaming on CraveTV.
The Bell Media rollout for the new Star Trek series in Canada will mirror the launch in the United States. The first episode will premiere on Canada’s most-watched broadcast network, CTV, on the same night as CBS.
All remaining episodes will initially be televised on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space (in English) and Z (in French), and then later exclusively on CraveTV, Bell Media’s streaming video-on-demand service. The Star Trek television library will return to Space (in English) and debut on Cinépop (in French), and will also be found among CraveTV’s leading lineup of premium television series.
This Netflix-based international distribution model is one that’s been happening with many popular shows being exported from the USA; for example, acclaimed AMC drama Better Call Saul and BBC America series Orphan Black are both distributed via Netflix outside of the United States.
A new seemingly spoiler-filled STAR TREK BEYOND promo video just landed from Paramount UK, featuring a look at Idris Elba’s bad-guy character Krall… and what seems to be a major revelation from the character’s backstory.
In the above video, Elba’s character appears for the first time out of heavy prosthetic makeup, in an archived video recording discovered by Uhura and Sulu – and he seems to be wearing one of the USS Franklin-style uniforms in which Spock spends most of the film.
Even we can’t believe this major STAR TREK BEYONDspoiler ended up being the focus of a new commercial, just days before the wide release of the film.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that 2016 is Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. With that milestone occasion, we have seen an increase in the number of tie-in media and products being released.
One such tie-in, The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained, promises to be a comprehensive, authoritative guide to the Star Trek universe. Does this title meet those expectations? Can it possibly rise to the occasion of being a “comprehensive” overview of this franchise that spans fifty years and boasts a fanbase that is singularly critical of all incarnations and knowledgeable about all aspects of said franchise?
First off, this book is laid out very well. It is divided into a number of sections that highlight various aspects of Trek. A general overview starts out the book, introducing the reader to the broad strokes of the setting of Star Trek. Next comes “Starfleet,” in which each of the main characters from the various series is profiled. Most of the characters get a two page spread, except for the Original Series characters who get four: two for the prime universe, and two for their Kelvin Timeline counterparts.
“Federation Allies and Enemies” is next, showcasing various species, groups, and individuals from throughout Star Trek history. These are the main ones, like the Klingons, the Cardassians, Khan, and the Maquis. After that comes “Science and Technology,” in which Star Trek staples like warp drive, the transporter, and holodecks are explored.
Finally, “New Life and New Civilizations” concludes the book, with a look at a few of the “leftovers”; aliens that are somewhat important to Star Trek as a whole, but maybe didn’t quite make the bar for the previous section. V’Ger, the Guardian of Forever, and the Pah-wraiths are a few examples of topics in this category.
This surprisingly effective layout makes it really easy to find the particular section you’re looking for, especially with the clear table of contents as well as an extremely thorough index. Can’t quite remember what species Kes was? It’s easy to look it up in seconds.
If you are a casual Star Trek fan, or even a newbie, this book is a really great introduction to the franchise. There is a lot of information here, but it is organized quite effectively. The broad overviews serve as a terrific way for a new fan to quickly get up to speed, while at the same time presenting information in a new and interesting way so that even the most hardcore fan can get enjoyment from the book. The graphics are often fun, illustrating concepts like the Vulcan mindmeld or Kirk’s doppelgangers throughout the years.
Given the limited space in the book, I often found myself impressed with just how much information the authors managed to include. While hardly near the scope of the Star Trek Encyclopedia (of which we will soon have an updated version), the amount of research and information crammed into this book is impressive. You won’t find an episode-by-episode guide, but you will also be hard-pressed to think of a crucial piece of the Star Trek tapestry that the authors of this books missed!
Even for a hardcore fan like myself, who has basically every fact from every series and film in the Star Trek universe memorized, The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained nonetheless will have a place on my bookshelf.
Beautifully laid out and featuring gorgeous full-color photos and illustrations, this book is perfect for the newbie to Star Trek, as well as the more seasoned fans. A few years ago, a friend of mine who had seen the 2009 Star Trek film wanted to get into the rest of the Trek universe.
I gave her a copy of Star Trek 101 by Terry J. Erdmann and Paula M. Block. While I still really like that book, I think that if it were around at the time, I would have included The Star Trek Book as a companion piece. The overview of the Star Trek universe that it provides is simply unparalleled. A great gift for Trekkies, Trekkers, and the Trek-curious alike!
