Michelle Obama and STAR TREK BEYOND Actors Host White House Screening

STAR TREK BEYOND stars Karl Urban, Chris Pine, and Simon Pegg got to help debut their new film at the White House this afternoon to a group of veterans and active service members – with the help of First Lady Michelle Obama.

The presentation was part of the White House’s Joining Forces initiative, started by Obama and Dr. Jill Biden in 2011, which works “hand in hand with the public and private sectors to ensure that service members, veterans, and their families have the tools they need to succeed throughout their lives.”

After the actors geeked out a bit about being at the White House, they spoke about their involvement (via Trek) with the armed forces and families of veterans and active duty military, they introduced Michelle Obama who spoke for a few minutes to the audience.

Having you [veterans] here for this movie – which is cool, because it’s not out yet, right? Nobody else is seeing this – this is really a special thing. So you have to commit to not sharing the plotline! You can’t give anything away, okay? But you should lord it over your friends and family.

But this is just a small but hopefully special way that we can show you how much we here at the White House and how many people, including all of the creators and the stars of “Star Trek,” how cool they think you all are. And this isn’t just here – this is everywhere around the country and, quite frankly, around the world.

We can’t say it lough enough, but hopefully a cool movie in the White House is a good beginning.

Jokingly, the First Lady left the event flashing a pair of Vulcan salutes, and wished the audience well by proclaiming, “May the Force be with you!”

Official: STAR TREK 4 is Happening, Hemsworth Returns

Paramount has officially announced that the Kelvin Timeline will continue in STAR TREK 4 (official title yet to be determined), which will bring back Thor actor Chris Hemsworth as George Kirk in the planned sequel.

J.J. Abrams revealed the scoop to Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz last week, who nearly has a stroke when he hears the news:

Here’s the official press release, which also confirms that one-time STAR TREK BEYOND writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McCay will return for the script.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES, SKYDANCE AND BAD ROBOT
ANNOUNCE A FOURTH “STAR TREK” FILM

CHRIS PINE AND CAST TO BE JOINED BY CHRIS HEMSWORTH, WHO RETURNS TO THE BLOCKBUSTER FRANCHISE AS GEORGE KIRK

HOLLYWOOD, CA (July 18, 2016) – Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Bad Robot today announced that the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will return to the big screen for another voyage.

In the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine’s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.

Chris Hemsworth, who appeared in 2009’s “STAR TREK,” will return to the space saga as George Kirk to star alongside Pine.

The remaining cast is expected to return.

J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will write the screenplay. J.J. Abrams and Lindsey Weber will produce through Bad Robot Productions. David Ellison and Dana Goldberg of Skydance will executive produce.

We’ve known for a year that both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto have been contracted for a fourth film, and in J.J. Abrams’ recent comments about a possible sequel, he confirmed that Anton Yelchin’s Chekov would not be recast after the actor’s unexpected death.

Netflix To Carry STAR TREK 2017 Outside of North America

Streaming giant Netflix has announced today that outside of North America, they will be the exclusive carrier of next year’s STAR TREK television revival, which will be exclusive to CBS All Access in the USA.

Netflix to Beam New CBS “Star Trek” Television Series in 188 Countries Around the World
Each Episode of the Highly Anticipated New Series to be Available to Netflix Members Exclusively in All Licensed Territories Within 24 Hours of the U.S. Premiere on CBS

LOS ANGELES and AMSTERDAM– July 18, 2016 – Netflix and CBS Studios International today announced a landmark international licensing agreement for the new “Star Trek” television series. Netflix will be the exclusive premiere home of “Star Trek” in 188 countries (excluding the US and Canada). Each episode of the new series will be available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.

Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic “Star Trek” television library – including “Star Trek: The Original Series,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: Voyager” and “Star Trek: Enterprise” will be available on Netflix around the world by the end of 2016.

The all-new “Star Trek” will begin production in Toronto in September for its January 2017 premiere. The iconic and influential global franchise will return to television for the first time since 2005 with a new ship, new characters and new missions, while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation.

“The launch of the new ‘Star Trek’ will truly be a global television event,” said Armando Nuñez, President and CEO, CBS Studios International. “‘Star Trek’ is already a worldwide phenomenon and this international partnership will provide fans around the world, who have been craving a new series for more than a decade, the opportunity to see every episode virtually at the same time as viewers in the U.S. Thanks to our world-class partners at Netflix, the new ‘Star Trek’ will definitely be ‘hailing on all frequencies’ throughout the planet.”

“‘Star Trek’ is one of the most iconic shows in television history and we’re thrilled to partner with CBS to bring the beloved series to Trekkies around the world,” said Sean Carey, Vice President of Global Television at Netflix. “The newest chapter of the story promises to continue the rich tradition of adventure and is sure to excite fans everywhere Netflix is available.”

The show will be available outside of North America within 24 hours of each episode’s American release, which should dramatically reduce international piracy issues that a delayed rollout would likely create.

In addition, this will save any existing international Netflix subscriber from having to pay any new costs to view the show – unlike fans in the United States, which will need to pay teh $5.99 monthly subscription to CBS All Access.

In Canada, the series will be available via Space, and streaming on CraveTV.

The Bell Media rollout for the new Star Trek series in Canada will mirror the launch in the United States. The first episode will premiere on Canada’s most-watched broadcast network, CTV, on the same night as CBS.

All remaining episodes will initially be televised on Bell Media’s cable networks, Space (in English) and Z (in French), and then later exclusively on CraveTV, Bell Media’s streaming video-on-demand service. The Star Trek television library will return to Space (in English) and debut on Cinépop (in French), and will also be found among CraveTV’s leading lineup of premium television series.

This Netflix-based international distribution model is one that’s been happening with many popular shows being exported from the USA; for example, acclaimed AMC drama Better Call Saul and BBC America series Orphan Black are both distributed via Netflix outside of the United States.

Major Spoilers Fill New Krall-Centric STAR TREK BEYOND Promo

A new seemingly spoiler-filled STAR TREK BEYOND promo video just landed from Paramount UK, featuring a look at Idris Elba’s bad-guy character Krall… and what seems to be a major revelation from the character’s backstory.

In the above video, Elba’s character appears for the first time out of heavy prosthetic makeup, in an archived video recording discovered by Uhura and Sulu – and he seems to be wearing one of the USS Franklin-style uniforms in which Spock spends most of the film.

REVIEW: “The Star Trek Book”

stbook-small

Who was the captain of the first Starship Enterprise? In which galactic quadrant is planet Earth located? And just what is the trouble with tribbles? Covering several centuries of intergalactic history, The Star Trek Book answers these questions and many more.

This comprehensive guide contains in-depth explanations of technological advances and key events in the Star Trek universe. It also includes detailed profiles of memorable characters, such as Starfleet personnel as well as their allies and enemies.

Packed with informative graphics, memorable quotes, and stills and props from the television series and movies, this book boldly explores and explains everything you need to know about 50 years of thrilling adventures across the final frontier.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that 2016 is Star Trek’s 50th anniversary. With that milestone occasion, we have seen an increase in the number of tie-in media and products being released.

One such tie-in, The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained, promises to be a comprehensive, authoritative guide to the Star Trek universe. Does this title meet those expectations? Can it possibly rise to the occasion of being a “comprehensive” overview of this franchise that spans fifty years and boasts a fanbase that is singularly critical of all incarnations and knowledgeable about all aspects of said franchise?

stbook1

First off, this book is laid out very well. It is divided into a number of sections that highlight various aspects of Trek. A general overview starts out the book, introducing the reader to the broad strokes of the setting of Star Trek. Next comes “Starfleet,” in which each of the main characters from the various series is profiled. Most of the characters get a two page spread, except for the Original Series characters who get four: two for the prime universe, and two for their Kelvin Timeline counterparts.

“Federation Allies and Enemies” is next, showcasing various species, groups, and individuals from throughout Star Trek history. These are the main ones, like the Klingons, the Cardassians, Khan, and the Maquis. After that comes “Science and Technology,” in which Star Trek staples like warp drive, the transporter, and holodecks are explored.

Finally, “New Life and New Civilizations” concludes the book, with a look at a few of the “leftovers”; aliens that are somewhat important to Star Trek as a whole, but maybe didn’t quite make the bar for the previous section. V’Ger, the Guardian of Forever, and the Pah-wraiths are a few examples of topics in this category.

stbook2

This surprisingly effective layout makes it really easy to find the particular section you’re looking for, especially with the clear table of contents as well as an extremely thorough index. Can’t quite remember what species Kes was? It’s easy to look it up in seconds.

If you are a casual Star Trek fan, or even a newbie, this book is a really great introduction to the franchise. There is a lot of information here, but it is organized quite effectively. The broad overviews serve as a terrific way for a new fan to quickly get up to speed, while at the same time presenting information in a new and interesting way so that even the most hardcore fan can get enjoyment from the book. The graphics are often fun, illustrating concepts like the Vulcan mindmeld or Kirk’s doppelgangers throughout the years.

Given the limited space in the book, I often found myself impressed with just how much information the authors managed to include. While hardly near the scope of the Star Trek Encyclopedia (of which we will soon have an updated version), the amount of research and information crammed into this book is impressive. You won’t find an episode-by-episode guide, but you will also be hard-pressed to think of a crucial piece of the Star Trek tapestry that the authors of this books missed!

stbook3

Final thoughts:

Even for a hardcore fan like myself, who has basically every fact from every series and film in the Star Trek universe memorized, The Star Trek Book: Strange New Worlds Boldly Explained nonetheless will have a place on my bookshelf.

Beautifully laid out and featuring gorgeous full-color photos and illustrations, this book is perfect for the newbie to Star Trek, as well as the more seasoned fans. A few years ago, a friend of mine who had seen the 2009 Star Trek film wanted to get into the rest of the Trek universe.

I gave her a copy of Star Trek 101 by Terry J. Erdmann and Paula M. Block. While I still really like that book, I think that if it were around at the time, I would have included The Star Trek Book as a companion piece. The overview of the Star Trek universe that it provides is simply unparalleled. A great gift for Trekkies, Trekkers, and the Trek-curious alike!

Trek Comics Review #59: “Connection, Part 1”

It’s the penultimate issue of IDW Publishing’s ongoing Kelvin Timeline Star Trek comic series: the first installment of “Connection,” the next adventure in the new Five Year Mission.

comic59-covers

There’s four choices of comic covers to pick from this month:

Order Star Trek #59

  • The regular cover, by interior artist Tony Shasteen, is a wonderful surprise. This features the cast of the original Star Trek series imposed over half of the Enterprise. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Uhura, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov look terrific, with the good doctor sporting a smile that beams with charm. The coloring is also good, composed of a cool combination of yellows, oranges, and light pinks. This would make an outstanding print.
  • The subscription cover is by Josh Adams, with colors by Adam Guzowski. This is also a nice shot of the crew, but this features the current film stars on the bridge looking at something on the viewscreen. Every character’s stance and emotion tells reveals something about them: McCoy leans on a terminal, Scotty looks at Kirk’s action, the captain strongly points forward, Spock turns to watch Uhura, the comm officer’s mouth is agape at the vision, Chekov is startled, and Sulu bites his lip at the unknown. Nicely done. There’s a lot of space between the title and the characters; looks as if Adams misjudged the size of the logo. Still, a good cover.
  • IDW Publishing is celebrating the acquisition of the publication rights to ROM, and there’s one featuring art by Drew Moss and colors from Adam Guzowski. I like the Enterprise, the sky, and the monsters threatening ROM and Kirk. The heroes give me a bit of pause. ROM looks much smoother than I remember him being, with his suit almost appearing to be rubber. He’s also got a something in his hand that resembles a stick of dynamite. What happened to his neutralizer? Kirk is just in a funky pose. He’s too calm as he fires upon the horrors before him. I like ROM and I like Star Trek, but I was hoping for something better.
  • You’ll have to go online if you want a copy of the Supply Pod retailer variant by Tony Shasteen. This is a beautiful piece featuring the original McCoy, Kirk, and Spock in bust shots above a gorgeous Enterprise. There’s a star flare in the upper left corner that leads to the captain who’s surrounded by his two friends. The iconic ship takes up the bottom third of the cover as it speeds upwards diagonally. The colors, again, are really good on this, with McCoy looking the best and the red splay of energy whipping past the Enterprise gives it an excellent sense of motion. Again, this is print worthy.

comic59-story

Mike Johnson finally gets to play in the best of both worlds: writing both the new and the old cast, side by side. “Connection” starts with Kirk waking up in his quarters… sort of. The entire issue is split down the horizontal center of book with the original series cast at the top and the film cast at the bottom.

Chris Pine’s Kirk has woken up in the Original Series’ Kirk’s quarters, while William Shatner’s Kirk is in the Kelvin Timeline. Though both characters are essentially doing the same things, this goes beyond a gimmick as Johnson shows the two thinking slightly different thoughts; his writing matches exactly how each interpretation of Kirk would think and speak in this situation.

Johnson does an exceptional job with these characters’ voices. Pine’s reaction to his uniform is “the colors and details were off,” while Shatner’s is, “the color are details were…unusual.” This slight tweaking echoes Shatner’s pauses and emphasis on certain words. As each man makes his way to a bridge that’s familiar, yet different, they become more alarmed. The character that each turns to in this situation was fitting, and their reactions to what they see on Page 6 cool.

What happens to each after this are very different, with certain crew members doing something to their obviously ailing captain; the dialogue at the bottom of 8 was spot on!

The reason for this switching of captains is revealed on page 11, and would work well enough for a movie premise. However, Johnson is not content to have just the captain switch places. On 12 many fans will have their longest dreams come true as one crew member goes somewhere not shown before. I laughed, was embarrassed, and felt sad at what occurs to the character at the top portion of the tale.

And it was impossible not to hear the bottom portion of this tale spoken in the actor’s voice. A third crew member also gets swapped, this time for humorous effect, and each behaves exactly as one would expect them.to; their final lines are 16 are perfection. The book has an excellent cliffhanger that leads into this series’ final issue.

Johnson captures each character’s voice and has quite a bit of fun swapping characters.

comic59-art

What an usual assignment this must have been for Tony Shasteen.

First, getting only half the page to be able to communicate each story to the reader, and second, showing essentially the same story, though with one character flipped. This may seem like a simple thing, swapping out a character, but the amount of details that he had to keep track of must have been maddening.

Take for example the first page where Kirk wakes up: the Shatner’s Kirk has quarters that are littered with mementos, while the film version’s quarters would be spotless, and they are. I love all the bric-a-brac that surrounds the Pine-Kirk when he gets up. The look that each character has on his face upon seeing their surroundings starts this tale of confusion excellently.

Shasteen uses each character’s reactions superbly throughout this book; take, for example, when each considers their uniform, their stance in the turbolift, and their final panels on 3 — outstanding.

The character work on each page is terrific, with 6’s captains stellar, the smile from McCoy on 7 sweet, the top of 12 beautifully moody, the partner atop 13 and 14 dreamy, and the reactions on 16 great. The exterior shots of each Enterprise are too few, as Shasteen does a good job on these as well, with each releasing an object that’s drawn excellently.

Stylistically, I’m still not happy with Shasteen’s backgrounds, which are very sketchy when compared to the characters that inhabit them. They are instantly recognizable, but should be much tighter. Pages 4 – 7 and 14 & 15 are just too blurry, distracting the reader from the actions of the characters. And, good heavens, what in the world is happening behind Chekov on 19? That effect should have been toned down immensely.

comic59-colors

David Mastrolonardo nails the coloring of this book sensationally. The opening shots in the Kirks’ quarters uses many similar colors (flesh and reds), but tweaks them every so slightly to show the differences exist not only with the captains but the colors (Shatner is paler than Pine, and the Original Series’ quarters are darker).

Both men wear the same color of mustard on their uniforms, which unites the pair visually, but their backgrounds are so wholly different as to have the reader join in their confusion. There are a lot of lens flares on the bridge of the Enterprise from the films, and I wish they had been lessened; although this is yet another visual sign for the reader.

The bottom panel on 6 is a particularly slick bit of coloring for a mirror effect that’s sharp. The shots in space are also good, with violets used to show the difference between Treks.

comic59-letters

Captain’s (or is that “Captains'”?) logs, sounds, dialogue, yells, communications, and the tease for next month’s final issue all hail from AndWorld Design.

The logs and dialogue are the same font, differentiated only by the shape and color of their dialogue balloons, which works, though I would have rather seen a different font employed. The communications, which appear on 19 use a different font and balloon shape, so it could have been done with the logs. The yells are done for humorous effect and they are funny.

The opening alarms to wake the Kirks are different, which is a slick way to tell the reader that this will be a story about slight differences. Nicely done.

Another Hour of New TREK BEYOND Clips and Interviews

Another day, and nearly another hour of STAR TREK BEYOND videos to take up your Saturday afternoon!

First up is this new clip from the film, giving us our first good look at Lydia Wison’s character Kalara, a pink-skinned humanoid which many have noted shares more than a passing resemblance to Alan Rickman’s character in Galaxy Quest.

Here’s another short interview clip on Sofia Boutella’s Jaylah, featuring some snippets of new scenes from the film – including her holographic duplication technology, where she can seemingly fight three bad guys at once.

Barco Escape has released this new trailer showcasing their three-screen plans for BEYOND when it arrives in theaters next week, featuring some new shots of the Swarm attack on the Enterprise. If you are near one of their new theaters, go check it out!

Krall actor Idris Elba spent Wednesday in London, helping to sign off on this large outdoor mural of the international BEYOND poster – and then surprised fans at a local screening of the film.

Finally, if yesterday’s dump of long-form interviews with the cast and crew weren’t enough, here’s even MORE conversation with the BEYOND team, filmed this week at the Los Angeles press junkets.
