THE RODDENBERRY VAULT Reveals Lost STAR TREK Clips, New Blu-Ray Release Arriving in Late 2016

In a surprise reveal today at its own San Diego Comic Con panel, STAR TREK: THE RODDENBERRY VAULT, a years-long endeavor to recover lost and cut footage from the making of the original Star Trek series, debuted with never-before-seen clips from production of the series.

The source of the recovered material (to be released as part of an extended documentary) comes from hundreds of film reels of archived, unused Original Series footage – called the “Holy Grail” by Denise Okuda – which remained in Gene Roddenberry’s possession after the conclusion of filming on the classic series.

Mike and Denise Okuda spoke to the motivations behind the nine-year (!) project, starting from hints of cut scenes in the James Blish novelizations of the classic Trek episodes to occasional publicity photos that the pair had never seen before.

Producer Roger Lay, Jr., who worked on the Next Generation and Enterprise Blu-ray releases, also confirmed that a Blu-ray release of this recovered footage will be arriving before the end of 2016 – but the team has not yet finalized the documentary, and could not specify how many minutes of recovered footage will be included.

UPDATE: Here’s the full press release for the upcoming Blu-ray:

IDW’s Post-BEYOND Comics Begin with BOLDLY GO Series

IDW Publishing’s sixty-issue Star Trek: Five Year Mission (previously Star Trek: Ongoing) monthly comic series comes to an end in August, and after taking a month off, the crew of the Kelvin Timeline’s USS Enterprise will be back in print for Star Trek: Boldly Go.

This new monthly post-STAR TREK BEYOND series kicks off in October, with writer Mike Johnson and artist Tony Shasteen returning to helm the ongoing storyline.

Star Trek: Boldly Go will reunite the fan-favorite Trek team of Mike Johnson and Tony Shasteen on writing and art duties, respectively, and will succeed the currently running Star Trek series which will conclude after 60 universe-expanding issues, penned primarily under Johnson’s watch. Boldly Go will follow the events of Star Trek Beyond, the latest major motion picture in the ongoing cinematic saga.

“What better way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of STAR TREK?” asks Star Trek editor Sarah Gaydos. “And what better team to do it with? Mike and Tony are poised to take the series in such an exciting direction. I can’t wait to introduce the world to these new characters… as well as some interesting friends and foes from the past.”

Chronicling the adventures of Captain Kirk and his iconic crew, a danger unlike anything the Federation has faced before threatens our heroes as they explore new worlds and encounter new species. All that plus brand-new uniforms for the crew!

Star Trek: Boldly Go will beam into comic shops this October and will feature character-focused connecting subscription variant covers by series artist, Tony Shasteen. A bold new era of STAR TREK begins here!

In a new interview with IGN, Johnson and Shasteen went into detail about the planning and goals of the new monthly series.

On starting up a new run of Kelvin Timeline comics, and following the events of STAR TREK BEYOND:

It’s been five years since we launched the ongoing comic, it sort of dovetailed nicely with the idea of a five-year mission. And literally, 60 issues divided by 12 months is five years, so it felt like an appropriate time to wrap it up. And then along with that, we had the movie coming out at the same time, which these comics have always followed the Kelvin timeline crew.

So it felt natural to then use the movie as sort of the jumping off point for the next series.

Stay tuned to TrekCore for our reviews of the new Star Trek: Boldly Go comics as they arrive!

IDW Publishing Announces STAR TREK / GREEN LANTERN Sequel Comic Series for Late 2016

Star Trek comic publisher IDW Publishing announced yesterday that their Star Trek / Green Lantern comic series, which wrapped up its six-issue run in January, will return later this year for another chapter in the crossover tale.

The first series – entitled THE SPECTRUM WAR – concluded with the Star Trek universe becoming the new home for the Green Lantern Corps, and the upcoming sequel will pick up from that development.

“We’re very happy to extend our ongoing relationship with DC with these iconic characters in new storylines,” says Greg Goldstein, President and COO of IDW Publishing. “Fans who enjoyed the previous series will enjoy the fun, new adventures we have in store for these upcoming titles.”

Captain Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise will once again cross paths with the Green Lantern Corps in a sequel to last year’s Star Trek/Green Lantern series. The creative team of Mike Johnson and Angel Hernandez will reteam for another epic space opera, this one picking up the new status quo where it left off and introducing additional cosmic heroes and villains familiar to fans of both series. This series is slated for a winter 2016 launch.

Trek Comics: NEW VISIONS Adaptation of “The Cage”

It’s a special of IDW Publishing’s ongoing Star Trek photonovel series: an adaptation of “The Cage,” the first adventure of the starship Enterprise under the command of Captain Pike!

Order New Visions: “The Cage”

Against the pale violet sky of Rigel VII that contains the Enterprise, a giant Talosian gestures to Captain Christoper Pike who’s surrounded by several familiar faces: Yeoman Colt, Mr. Spock, Dr. Boyce, and Number One.

He’s pulled a phaser on four others — all different versions of Vina. A beautiful cover created by John Byrne that combines some of the iconic characters from this episode into one image. I’m a huge fan of Captain Pike, so this really works for me.

cage-story

“Based on the television episode written by Gene Roddenberry,” this adaptation by John Byrne captures all of “The Cage” to celebrate Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. If a reader hasn’t seen this episode, it’s a fantastic look at the voyages that could have been.

This fifty-page giant opens with the Enterprise receiving a radio wave that’s transmitting a distress signal: a ship in trouble is making a forced landing. It’s coming from the Talos star group, but there are no known ships or colonies out there. The signal matches that of the S.S. Columbia, lost eighteen years ago, which would explain why the radio signal took so long to be received.

Captain Pike is unwilling to investigate, given that there are no indications of survivors. He goes to his quarters and summons the ship’s doctor to include his opinion in the ship’s log on the signal, but the conversation turns to a recent mission that’s gives the captain pause to consider what he’s doing with his life. Their discussion provides much backstory to the captain, but their dialogue ends when Spock interrupts that are crash survivors on Talos IV.

Pike then finds himself in a situation that no other captain has encountered before. It’s neat to see his reaction to the characters on Page 17 and how he how interacts with both characters on 20. Pike’s response at the bottom of 24 and his dialogue on all of 25 nicely shows how he’s a man that doesn’t succumb to his animal nature, but wants answers to his questions.

As Pike is trying to learn what’s happening to him, his crew isn’t just sitting idly by; they are taking some extreme measures to get to him. The give and take between Pike and one of the antagonists on 31 and 32 has always been a favorite scene of mine: each character believes they have the upper hand and the give-and-take is still strong after all this time.

If one wants to see the definition of Star Trek cool dialogue, the final two panels on 43 that contain text are just awesome. Also commanding a strong punch is the scene on 48 — it’s still haunting. Where the characters end up is great, with the dialogue in the fourth panel on 49 an awesome climax.

cage-art

Photomontage work is done by John Byrne using images from the episode, manipulating them so that the story may be told in the visual form of a comic book. Byrne is not just finding frames from the episode and cutting and pasting them into a format to be read; he’s combining and creating images to make a larger picture and to intensify the drama.

For example, at the bottom of Page 3 Pike is making his way to the turbolift. The panel’s focus is on him, but the dialogue balloons lead the reader to move toward Number One, who responds to her captain’s orders. This is a combination of several images because Number One is not in the original shot of the television episode; I know, because I double-checked on Netflix.

The inclusion of Number One in the panel gives a reaction of disappointment from the bridge crew, showing that not all agree with his decision and giving one character some individuality. Due to the time period of this episode, the dimensions weren’t in the widescreen format that today’s audiences get from their programs. If Byrne had followed the dimensions of the broadcasted image, this book would be a series of six squares on every page, and that would be unbelievably boring to look at.

One of my favorite images is on Page 17, where one character’s reflection is placed on another character. This is terrific way to show a character’s visual reaction to another’s speech and reinforces the setting for the protagonist. The look on the antagonist’s face is sensational, as he shows fear at the lead’s words. This point of view is repeated on 31 and 32 for a similar, outstanding effect.

There’s a neat montage on 48 and I love that it only goes up to a specific point in human history, giving a nod to when this television episode would have been filmed. The visuals that should have the most effect on the reader occur on 48. It works better as a series of stills in this book, than the limited dissolve effects of the 1960s.

The imagery of this book tells the story well and does so in such a smooth way that some fans might think they’re looking at cut and pasted images. This only shows that Byrne has a masterful command of this format.

cage-letters

The series title and creator, the dedication, dialogue, the story’s title and adapter, sounds, and a yell are also crafted by John Byrne. I’m so happy to have sound effects in this story, because many of these noises have become so iconic their absence would be instantly noticed, such as those on 14 and 23.

Several of the sounds are colored outlines and this is absolutely the right thing to do; if the sounds had been colored solid they would have obscured too much of the imagery in the panels. My favorite bit of lettering in the book is the absence of dialogue balloons for several characters. I don’t recall ever seeing this form of communication done without the balloons and it’s an extremely clever way of visually reinforcing for the reader how these characters have specific dialogues.

I didn’t even notice this until I went through the book a second time. Very, very smart.

Final thoughts:

I’ve read some commentary online with some fans challenging the publication of this adaptation of “The Cage,” essentially arguing “Why should I buy it if it’s an episode?” First and foremost, the story is excellent. This episode was notoriously cast aside because it was too cerebral. Heaven forbid a story should make one think. The message of the story still resounds, fifty years after the fact.

Even if one has more than a passing familiarity with the story, having it in this format makes it easier to access than pushing several buttons to call up to view. The visuals are wonderful. Star Trek has a look to it that has become ingrained in the minds of millions. I count myself as one of those who could just pour over the visual aspects of this series, and I have in more than one publication.

Looking at these images is thrilling. I linger over every panel, soaking in each element. It’s far easier to enjoy the images of this book than to continually hit pause during a viewing, let alone go back and forth to try and find the right image. This is an incredible reference for an incredible episode. It’s the perfect special to celebrate Trek’s golden anniversary.

“For the Love of Spock” Official Trailer

The first full trailer for Adam Nimoy’s For the Love of Spock documentary arrived this week, featuring clips of some of the film’s interviews with the STAR TREK BEYOND cast, as well as other Trek luminaries such as Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer, original cast actors William Shatner, Walter Koenig and George Takei, Kelvin Timeline producer/director J.J. Abrams, and others.

The film is making its way around the film festival circuit now, and will be shown at the annual Las Vegas Star Trek convention in August, as well as the Mission New York convention over Labor Day weekend.

For the Love of Spock will make it’s global debut on September 9 in theaters and on multiple video-on-demand services.

TREK BEYOND Box Office Numbers Arrive for Early Shows

STAR TREK BEYOND debuts in wide release today for the United States and 36 other international markets, but the Wednesday night Kelvin Timeline marathon and Thursday’s early-bird showings have already started to gain decent ticket sale revenue.

The new film, which is out in 3,928 theaters nationwide today, drew in a surprising $5.5 Million figure just from preview screenings, which is a big increase from the $2 Million preview opening nabbed by Star Trek Into Darkness back in 2013. BEYOND wasn’t expected to top STID’s opening weekend numbers (which finished at just over $70 Million in May 2013), but this could signal a larger sales figure yet to come for the new movie.

Per Deadline, this is actually a bigger take than last year’s Spectre, which grabbed $5.25 Million for preview showings of the latest James Bond film.

Deadline also gets deep into social media tracking:

In terms of social media, Star Trek Beyond has a strong Social Media Universe of 191M. The third installment breaks down as 27.1M Facebook fans, 26.2M Twitter followers, about 3M Instagram followers, and over 134.7M YouTube views. According to RelishMix, the film is benefitting from YouTube views from earlier installments in the series. The official trailer is getting 20K to 30K views daily, but daily view counts for most videos for Beyond are rather light, in the 10K to 25K range. The earned-owned ratio of 7:1 is also good, but not great.

The addition, they say that Rihanna’s music video has been a spark plug, adding 20M views since June, 30th. And, the cast is engaged from Simon Pegg (7.9M fans and followers) to Zachary Quinto to Zoe Saldana, which is good news beyond its big Comic-Con presence.

In fact, as of Thursday afternoon, the #StarTrek, #StarTrekMovie, #StarTrekBeyond, #StarTrekPremiere and other related hashtags really started taking off more than doubling the amount of activity from yesterday morning.

We’ll follow up as the weekend progresses to see just how far BEYOND tracks during these opening days in theaters.
