The Wand Company Shares New Updates on Classic STAR TREK Tricorder Replica Project

It’s been nearly nine months since The Wand Company unveiled its plans to recreate the classic Star Trek tricorder as a fully-interactive electronic prop replica — following its similar Original Series communicator and phaser products — and as Spring rolls in, the company has shared some updates on how this major undertaking is progressing.

A few weeks ago, company director Chris Barnardo released an initial statement about the tricorder replica’s long development time — the first comments about the project since last July’s announcements — promising more to come as the weeks and months ahead continue.

[You] have been patient, but now an update is long overdue. Work progresses well on the development as we overcome the challenges of creating an exact Tricorder replica that functions properly and is a worthy companion to our Phaser and Communicator. I know that you are going to have hundreds of questions and I hope that these emails, with news and tidbits of development chitchat, will answer most (if not all) of them, as we concentrate our efforts to get this Tricorder manufactured and into your hands.

Remember that we are a very small team and are hugely grateful for your patience, so bear that in mind if we don’t have time to answer every question. We can assure you that, as fans ourselves, we are as desperate as you to see this wonderful version of the Tricorder working for fans around the world as soon as possible.

I know that we have left you hanging, but I also know that you believe (rightly so) that this is because The Wand Company will not knowingly compromise on the details that make our Tricorder something that you will love, as we leave no stone unturned in our quest to make this the best ever functional replica, which is taking a bit more of our time and concentration that we had bargained for.

Over the coming weeks, we are now at last ready to take you on a journey through space and time as, bit by bit, we unravel the steps we have taken to bring this iconic piece to life. So wherever you call home on this pandemic-ravaged planet of ours, I hope you will be able to sit back and enjoy the story as it unfolds.

As part of the first early-March update, Bernardo shared this CAD file illustrating the guts of the planned tricorder replica, teasing fans that it offers “a sneak preview of some of the details and functions” that the finished product will contain.

Following up on that promise for future updates, The Wand Company team shared a lengthy behind-the-scenes breakdown of how they’re utilizing the last remaining original Wah Chang-designed tricorder props from the Original Series — owned by Star Trek film and television series modelmaker Greg Jein, perhaps most famous for building the Enterprise-D and other classic Next Generation models.

Greg’s tricorder is one of the two originals that were made by the late, great, Wah Chang in June 1966, long before anyone knew how enduring Star Trek and his prop designs were to become… the one in Greg’s collection is the “Wah A-B” (so-called because parts of the original two “A” and “B” units were swapped around after Season 1).

Meeting in late 2019 (luckily, before the pandemic would have made such efforts a daunting challenge), Jein shared his original screen-used tricorder with the company for laser 3D scanning and other examination processes to serve as base reference material for The Wand Company’s efforts.

The 3D scanning of inanimate objects is more accurately performed with either a laser scanner or a “structured light” scanner. For the tricorder, we used a Hexagon Metrology system comprising a ROMER Absolute Arm with an RS3 laser scanning head. The arm is balanced to enable the operator to move the laser scanner smoothly around the subject, and contains seven precision encoders to keep track of the exact position of the scanning head.

As reflective surfaces (such as metal and glass) do not scan well, before the scanning could start, the glossiest parts of this priceless prop were gently spray-coated with a scary-looking but, everyone was assured, totally harmless self-vanishing 3D-scanning spray. Greg oversaw this process to make sure that the prop wasn’t damaged.

Under Greg’s patient and watchful eye, the laser scanner’s 65 mm long blade of red light ‘painted’ over the surface geometry of the tricorder, rapidly measuring the distance from the scanning head to the surface 4,600 times per line, plotting highly accurate positional coordinates that stitched together to build up a three-dimensional point cloud of the tricorder’s surface. On a nearby laptop, a 3D image seemed to appear out of thin air as more and more of the surface was scanned.

After checking with Greg that doing so would not damage the prop, Andrew opened the tricorder’s top and bottom doors to peer inside. As expected, the top compartment was almost completely lacking in internal features. Those details – the rack of “memory discs” and the circular moiré element – known now only from what can be seen in first season screencaps, are long gone.

At some point in the summer of ’67 after the end of Season 1, the production team decided that they needed more tricorder props.  The two original masterpieces were taken apart so that copies could be made and, in the process, the original props were damaged and eviscerated, with the original guts now lost forever.  Opening the lower door revealed some slightly more interesting details, which Andrew has since been keen to include in our replica.

Measuring and inspecting the exterior and interior of the original tricorder prop. (Photos: The Wand Company)

The 3D scan data is a fantastic resource for guiding our CAD modelling, but we also took as many physical measurements as possible. The measurements provide a good old-fashioned control reference and, equally importantly, handling these classic props always brings us closer to understanding the original designer’s intent. Studying these incredible items with our own hands and eyes helps us to bond with them and become immersed in their story, in a more powerful way than just watching a 3D scan emerge on a computer screen.

The 30-micron (just over one-thousandth of an inch) accuracy of the 3D scan data is great for the overall geometry, but even finer resolution is needed to analyse the surface texture of the black Kydex material from which most of the tricorder’s body is made.

We had already studied this material when developing our Star Trek Communicator replica, and had been generously loaned a piece of the original 1960s Kydex by HeroComm, which we had been able to scan with a Zygo 3D surface profiler which uses white-light interferometry to measure the surface undulations with an incredible 1-nanometer resolution (a strand of human DNA is 2.5 nanometers thick!).

Weights, measurements, even texture patterns were captured from the original prop. (Photos: The Wand Company)

However, to check the way that Wah Chang’s vacuum-forming process might have stretched the Kydex texture in different regions of the tricorder, we took a few silicone rubber impressions of the surface. For further reference, we weighed the tricorder and, of course, measured the geometry of the strap and its stitching

While there’s still no formal release date or pricing set for The Wand Company’s tricorder prop replica, Bernardo notes that there is still “quite a bit of the story to come” as the months ahead progress towards a reveal of the final product.

Last summer, the company said they were targeting a price point of around $250 USD — quite the bargain for such a replica, as anyone in the collecting arena will tell you — but as more specifics arrive about their final offering, you can be sure we’ll share them here.

If you’re interested in this classic Star Trek tricorder prop replica, you can register on The Wand Company’s website for more news on the project, and preorder availability, as things move closer to fruition.

Set Course for Bathtime with STAR TREK: TNG Tubbz Ducks

If your bubble baths have gotten stuck in the 21st century, you can now jump ahead to the Enterprise-D era as the second wave of Star Trek Tubbz duck figures from Numskull made their splash this past week.

The first set of Star Trek Tubbz ducks were designed to emulate the classic Original Series characters of Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Lt. Uhura, and Dr. McCoy, and in the 2021 second wave, the vinyl line moves to The Next Generation as Captain Picard, Lt. Commander La Forge, Counselor Troi, and Lt. Worf paddle onto the scene.

Measuring about 4 inches tall, Captain Picard is pointing in his signature ‘Engage’ motion, the La Forge Tubbz carries the engineer’s signature red padd, Troi has the counselor’s signature eyeshadow and flowing locks, and the Worf Tubbz is armed with his trusty bat’leth for bathtime battles.

Original Series Tubbz are available now, and preorders are open now for the Next Generation series ahead of their planned June 2021 release.

While the Original Series Star Trek Tubbz have been spotted at Target stores in the United States, if these feathered Federation friends are going to join your collection, the Next Generation (and classic Trek) Tubbz can all be ordered through Numskull’s website for $12.99 each in the US, and £12.99 each for shoppers in the UK.

Longtime STAR TREK Artist John Eaves to Receive Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award

Longtime Star Trek artist John Eaves has been working with the franchise for nearly thirty year, joining the Star Trek V: The Final Frontier team back in 1989 and having a hand in nearly every incarnation since: the Next Generation series and feature films, Deep Space NineEnterprise, the Kelvin Timeline films, and Discovery.

His designs include headlining Trek starships from the Sovereign-class Enterprise-E from Star Trek: First Contact to the Walker-class USS Shenzhou in Star Trek: Discovery. While his design work has been featured in special presentations like the “John Eaves Sketchbook” interview series on the DS9 DVD sets and the Star Trek: First Contact & Star Trek: Insurrection Sketchbook, fans finally got a spotlight look at his work in 2019’s The Art of John Eaves (which we reviewed upon its release).

A concept design for the Discovery-era Enterprise, by Scott Schneider and John Eaves.

This year, Eaves’ peers will be honoring his decades of contributions both Star Trek and other productions when he’s presented with the Art Directors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in April, recognizing his years of contributions to the industry.

Here’s the official announcement from the Art Directors Guild:

LOS ANGELES, March 31, 2021 – Concept Artist John Eaves, known for his iconic illustrations and designs for the Star Trek series and for the numerous science fiction realms he created, will receive the Art Directors Guild (ADG, IATSE Local 800) Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illustrators and Matte Artists (IMA) at the 25th Annual ADG Awards.

Herman Zimmerman, Emmy®-nominated Production Designer for the Star Trek franchise, will be presenting the award to Eaves. The event will celebrate Eaves’ artistic contribution to the many space vehicles, sets, and concepts that have become classics in the Marvel, Star Trek and Sci-Fi worlds that we know today.

“For the past 36 years, John’s work as a Production Illustrator has been an integral part of over 100 films and television shows. From props, to sets, to vehicles, to gadgets, and, most prominent and recognizable, a small fleet of starships for the Star Trek franchise, John has inspired many and left an amazing mark on our industry. We celebrate his creativity, talent, and contributions to the Craft and honor him with this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Tim Wilcox, ADG Illustrators & Matte Artists Council Chair.

John Eaves has worked as a concept artist on many of Hollywood’s most successful franchises, creating iconic Sci-Fi images of futuristic worlds, vehicles, spaceships, and otherworldly designs that have become the foundations and concepts of over 100 award-winning motion picture franchises.

These include four Star Trek movies; Captain America: The Winter Soldier; Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides; Spider-Man: Homecoming; Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Iron Man 3. His talented prop designer and diverse model maker skills are on display in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Ant-Man, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Iron Man 2, Batman Forever, Toys, Die Hard 2, RoboCop 2 and The Hunt for Red October, among many others.

Eaves’ groundbreaking work has garnered him numerous awards, including four previous ADG awards. As a child, John was fascinated with aircraft and science fiction and how films came together, a fascination that continued into adulthood and which led to a highly successful 36-year career and still counting.

Eaves will be presented the award during the virtual 25th Annual Art Directors Guild Awards on April 11, where legendary Star Trek production designer Herman Zimmerman will preside over the moment.

New STAR TREK LEGENDS Game Debuts on Apple Arcade

Tilting Point LLC, the digital gaming company behind Star Trek Timelines, rolled out their next Star Trek mobile game today, tying almost all generations of the Trek franchise together in Star Trek Legends.

Launching today on the Apple Arcade gaming platform — playable on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac devices — the new Star Trek Legends game ties together characters from the Original Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, and the TOS and TNG feature films using the time-traveling anomaly featured in Star Trek: Generation, the mysterious Nexus.

Captain Kirk, Dr. Crusher, Seven of Nine, Scotty, General Martok, Worf, and Soji Asha make up this STAR TREK LEGENDS player’s custom crew.

From the game’s official synopsis:

Engage in an epic storyline for control of the mysterious Nexus and the fate of the universe as players step into the role of their favorite Star Trek heroes and villains in the hit franchise’s official team-based RPG. Players will embark on missions, experience epic turn-based combat and make choices that influence the entire story as they take command of the U.S.S. Artemis.

They’ll warp into the Nexus, where they’ll discover new worlds and recruit over 40 of their favorite characters from the entire Star Trek franchise – Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: The Next Star Trek: Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Discovery, and Star Trek: Picard.

Their crew’s skills and ingenuity will prove critical as players choose the right team members from their collection for the task at hand. Each legend has their own unique set of skills, abilities and weapons, from Spock’s Vulcan Nerve Pinch to Worf’s deadly Bat’leth.

Explore beautifully rendered 3D worlds, fully realized and lovingly animated characters, and a dynamic graphics system that provides a console-level experience on your Apple device.

Burnham, Pike, Worf and Picard battle a Romulan, a Gorn, Locutus of Borg, and the Borg Queen.

Characters like Dr. McCoy, the Borg Queen, General Martok, Phillipa Georgiou, and Soji Asha all share the screen in this crossover game, which was also the subject of a feature interview on the official Star Trek website today — shedding a little more light behind the game’s story.

Something is happening within the Nexus that is causing its walls to break down. It would have started long before the events of ‘Star Trek: Generations’, where the Nexus rifts were a known phenomenon, and it’s becoming more and more of a threat.

‘Star Trek: Generations’ established that travel into the Nexus isn’t a simple matter, but it would stand to reason the Federation has been hard at work understanding more about it. When the events of ‘Star Trek: Legends’ begin, the Federation is finally successful in constructing a starship – the U.S.S. Artemis – capable of withstanding the power of the rift and traversing the Nexus. At least, theoretically.

And that is where we are bringing the player in. The maiden voyage of the U.S.S. Artemis is a perilous one. No one knows what awaits on the other side of the rift and how the ship and its crew will be able to come back from the Nexus. If there ever was a mission you would “boldly go” on, this is it. As captain of the U.S.S. Artemis, we are immediately casting the player as a true model of a Starfleet officer: stalwart in the face of danger and committed to the greater good in the face of immense risk.

It won’t be long before the player learns of other Starfleet officers that have been pulled into the Nexus from other eras of Star Trek history. The Nexus is not bound by our principles of time and space, and you start the journey ignorant of the circumstances that have led to this time-spanning union. It’s a considerable part of the overall mystery as you and your crew delve deeper into the origins of the extradimensional realm.

That’s not to say everything about your adventure in the Nexus will be alien and shrouded in mystery. We’re using the liberty it affords us as a realm consisting of multitudes of realities to tell self-contained stories and even follow up on old plots that have become iconic to ‘Star Trek’ fans.

The Gorn captain wants a rematch, Kirk!

If you’re interested in checking out this new Star Trek Legends game and have a compatible device, you can find it at Apple Arcade today.

Mirror Spock & Mirror Chekov, PICARD’s La Sirena Join 2021’s Hallmark STAR TREK Ornament Lineup

Last year’s Star Trek Hallmark holiday ornaments were the first in a new line of larger “Storytellers” products, with built-in lights and audio electronics in these first inter-connecting display pieces — and for 2021, the company is continuing their plans with two more classic Star Trek characters.

Revealed this week are the first look at Hallmark’s take on the Terran Empire’s version of Pavel Chekov and Mr. Spock, part of the seven-character “Mirror, Mirror” series of Star Trek Storyteller ornaments that Hallmark announced in 2019.

Following Mirror Kirk, Sulu, and Uhura in 2020 — and expected to conclude with the Mirror versions of Scotty and Dr. McCoy in 2022 — the special run of episodic tie-in figures are once again expected to be the main offerings from Hallmark this year.

…and the first photos of the final products from Hallmark’s 2021 catalog.

From our August 2019 report:

Each of the character ornaments contain audio from the episode, and will play back lines from the episode on their own — but when brought together, the ornaments will communicate with each other with built-in radio technology to replicate scenes from the episode where those characters interacted.

Once all seven $29.00 ornaments are released — Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov — the entire set will work together to perform a cut-down, abbreviated rendition of “Mirror, Mirror” for owners.

The first five Storytellers ornaments, and classic Enterprise tree-topper (released in 2020).

The Hallmark Star Trek ornament fan site also published some additional technical details on the 2021 ornaments, from the soon-to-be-published 2021 Hallmark catalog, including an anticipated July 10, 2021 in-store availability date and the projected $34.99 retail price.

APRIL 2 UPDATE:

While like last year, the Star Trek Storytellers ornaments are the primary Trek releases for 2021, as the 2021 Hallmark “Dream Book” made its way to TheDigitalDreamBook.com today, revealing that the two Mirror Universe crewmates will be joined this October by the first starship ornament from Star Trek: Picard, Captain Rios’ La Sirena.

A digital render of Hallmark’s planned La Sirena ornament.

Retailing at $32.99 when it goes up for sale this October, the Kaplan F17 Speed Freighter ornament will be Hallmark’s first starship ornament since 2019’s refit Constitution-class, as last year the company took the year off from ship designs to focus on the launch of the Star Trek Storyteller releases.

2021’s new Star Trek Storyteller ornaments will be available this July at local Hallmark Gold Crown stores, and online at Hallmark.com.

Set a Course for Camping in New STAR TREK: TNG Shuttlecraft Tent (No, This is Not an April Fool’s Day Gag)

Now that we’re on our way out of the winter months, it’s time to start planning for summer excursions (pandemic permitting, of course!) and there’s no better way to get away from being stuck inside for the past year than hitting the trails in the great outdoors… and now you can set up camp Star Trek style!

Debuting this week from Ukonic — and we swear this isn’t an April Fool’s Day gag, as it’s been in development for some time now — the new two-person Star Trek: The Next Generation Shuttlecraft Justman pop-up camping tent will help you brave the elements on your nature-bound away mission.

Do you ever look up at the stars and wonder… where is the U.S.S. Enterprise? We sure have! Stargaze all night long with this pop-up camping tent inspired by Star Trek: The Next Generation. The authentic design resembles a small-scale Federation Type 6 shuttlecraft, as seen attached to the Enterprise-D.

Now you can boldly go where no one has gone before right here on Earth. The durable construction is made to withstand harsh weather and conditions, including a B3 mesh design to repel insects and mosquitoes. This camping tent is perfect for your away mission to a local campground or an evening of stargazing right in your own backyard. You could even use this spacious tent to transform a Twin XL bedroom into a fabulous shuttle bay.

Built to comfortably sleep 2-3 people, this tent is easy to set up for all of your outdoor adventures. The convenient pop-up design means no assembly is required, so Trekkies can enjoy a hassle-free experience. The camping tent features a portable design and comes complete with a carrying bag for storage. Easily pack it up for your intergalactic missions across the cosmos.

Note: Metaphasic shielding function not guaranteed.

The pop-up tent is named for classic Star Trek and first-season Star Trek: The Next Generation producer Bob Justman, who was nearly as influential as Gene Roddenberry himself in building the foundation of the Trek franchise, as part of Roddenberry’s team dating back to “The Cage” in 1964.

Based upon the Enterprise-D’s Type-6 shuttlecraft of the same name — Beverly Crusher’s metaphasic shield test shuttle seen in “Suspicions,” which returned in “Gambit, Part II” — the Justman tent is retailing at $139 and on sale now at the Toynk store.

Clear Your Calendars and Make Room for STAR TREK’s April 5 FIRST CONTACT DAY Celebration

Last September’s Star Trek Day was a rousing afternoon of convention panels and online activity, sorely needed in a year when everyone was stuck at home and missing that Comic Con and STLV experiences… and next week, we’re getting a springtime sequel!

April 5, 2063 was the day Vulcans first made contact with humanity in Bozeman, Montana — depicted, of course, in 1996’s Star Trek: First Contact feature film — and next Monday, the Star Trek franchise is celebrating that historic day with their own First Contact Day event.

Virtual First Contact Day Celebration Will Commemorate Pivotal Moment of Exploration and Acceptance in “Star Trek” History, first depicted in “Star Trek: First Contact”

Programming Includes Themed Panels with Cast and Creatives from “Star Trek” Series, Cast from “Star Trek: First Contact,” Exclusive News from the Star Trek Universe on Paramount+, The Return of #StarTrekUnitedGives and More

March 30, 2021 – Paramount+ invites fans from around the world to a virtual celebration of First Contact Day on Monday, April 5. As depicted in the film “Star Trek: First Contact,” April 5, 2063 is the day that humans first make contact with Vulcans, marking a pivotal moment of exploration and acceptance in “Star Trek” history.

The virtual event will honor and commemorate this future date by providing “Star Trek” fans exclusive programming, including themed panels with the cast and creatives from classic and current “Star Trek” television series and cast from “Star Trek: First Contact,” exclusive news from the Star Trek Universe on Paramount+, curated episode marathons, the return of the #StarTrekUnitedGives initiative and more.

Additional information on free First Contact Day programming and initiatives can be accessed at StarTrek.com/FirstContact.

A follow up to Star Trek Day, First Contact Day is also a continued celebration of “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry and the world he created and first introduced to audiences almost 55 years ago, championing diversity, inclusion, acceptance and hope.

The main event starts at 3PM ET (12PM PT) on Monday, April 5, where returning Star Trek Day hosts Wil Wheaton and Mica Burton will emcee three hours of panels and presentations, in the middle of a twelve-hour Star Trek episode marathon themed around the day’s celebration.

  • Special Presentation (3PM ET / 12PM PT): The event begins with a “special announcement and presentation by Patrick Stewart,” with details yet to be revealed. Our speculation is that it may be an official “We’re in production!” update for Star Trek: Picard Season 2, but who knows!

  • Star Trek: First Contact 25th Anniversary Panel (3:20PM ET / 12:20PM PT): Cast members Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner and Alice Krige discuss behind-the-scenes memories and the film’s importance 25 years after its premiere.

  • “Creating First Contacts” Panel (4PM ET / 1PM PT): Costume Designer Gersha Phillips (Star Trek: Discovery), Senior Concept Designer Neville Page, VFX Supervisor Jason Zimmerman and Make-up & Prosthetics Department Head James Mackinnon (Star Trek: Picard) come together in conversation about creating the incredible worlds of Star Trek, as seen in Discovery and Picard.

  • “Women In Motion” Panel (4:30PM ET / 1:30PM PT): Star Trek: Discovery’s Sonequa Martin-Green, Star Trek: Picard’s Michelle Hurd and Isa Briones, and Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Dawnn Lewislook back at how Star Trek: The Original Series actress Nichelle Nichols helped pave the way for women of color on television and overall, her lasting impact on not only Star Trek, but science and culture.

  • “Second Contact” Panel (5PM ET / 2PM PT): Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Paul F. Tompkins, the co-host of official Star Trek podcast The Pod Directive, and Brent Spiner and Jonathan Frakes of Star Trek: The Next Generation discuss how some of the hilarious B-stories from past series like The Next Generation paved the way for new iterations of Star Trek, including Lower Decks.

  • “Star Trek: Prodigy” Panel (5:30PM ET / 2:30PM ET): Kevin and Dan Hageman are joined by Star Trek: Voyager’s Captain Kathryn Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, who is reprising her role in animated form in Prodigy, as they talk about the highly anticipated upcoming CG-animated kids series.

Like the September Star Trek Day event, these panels will be available to fans worldwide through the official franchise website — at StarTrek.com/FirstContact — and will also stream for free in the U.S. on PlutoTV and Paramount+’s Twitch page.

(If you can’t watch them live, don’t worry; they’ll also be available afterwards on the Paramount+ YouTube channel, and available to streaming subscribers on Paramount+ as well.)

For fans in the United States, there will also be a marathon of Star Trek episodes from all of the television shows, each featuring an “iconic first contact.”

    • TOS: “Arena”
    • LOWER DECKS: “Second Contact”
    • DS9: “Little Green Men”
    • SHORT TREKS: “Children of Mars”
    • VOY: “Scorpion, Part II”
    • DSC: “New Eden”
    • TAS: “The Infinite Vulcan”
    • ENT: “The Andorian Incident”
    • TNG: “First Contact” (Season 4 episode)
    • PIC: “Broken Pieces”

This “Best of First Contacts” marathon begins at 12PM ET (9AM PT) and will pause during the three-hour First Contact Day panel session. The marathon of episodes will be available to stream for free at StarTrek.com/FirstContact for viewers based in the U.S. only (due to international licensing rights).

The franchise is also reviving the Star Trek United Gives charity campaign they launched in September.

On April 5, for every person that tweets the hashtag StarTrekUnitedGives (#StarTrekUnitedGives), Paramount+ will donate $1 to organizations who do the real-world work of championing equality, social justice and the pursuit of scientific advancements.

While that’s all the official news about the First Contact Day plans, we’re hoping that there may be some surprises planned for the events — and with Lower Decks and Prodigy panels as part of the celebration, perhaps we’ll even find out when those two shows may let fans make “first contact” with their upcoming new seasons.

If that’s not enough to make you want to pay attention on Monday, you also may want to keep your eyes open for some new Star Trek product announcements that might be beaming down on April 5 — keep your sensors locked on TrekCore for all the news that breaks that day!

STAR TREK: VOYAGER Documentary Fundraiser Campaign Tops $1 Million, Targets HD Footage & Premiere Events

As it enters the final week of fundraising, the incredibly-successful crowdfunding campaign behind To The Journey — Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager spent this weekend blasting past its ultimate stretch target of $1 Million raised from fans around the world.

The campaign set a stretch goal of $900,000 to be able to remaster included Voyager episodic footage into high-definition — which, despite the funds raised, is still being negotiated with ViacomCBS — which was a major victory and selling point for this film’s older cousin, What We Left Behind — Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

455 Films, the production company behind this Voyager documentary project, has stated that if there’s not an agreement reached with ViacomCBS regarding Voyager remastering work, they’ll simply put that money raised into other parts of production — but there’s no reason to give up hope yet.

In recent months, fans have lent their own time and computing power to take the existing DVD release of the series and create a home-brewed upscale to a quality that’s somewhat approximate of a high-definition experience; while the earlier seasons of Voyager don’t see much of an improvement due to the poor picture quality, the latter years have been remarkably clarified through these fan efforts.

TrekCore reader Billy Reichard shared these captures from a home-upscaled edition of “Bride of Chaotica!,” which hints at just how much improvement a true remastering could bring to Voyager.

In addition, now that this major $1 Million milestone has been reached, the campaign’s final stretch goal — “an exclusive, never-before-seen Voyager surprise” — has been unlocked, but for now, there’s only fan speculation as to what that top-secret reveal is going to be. (Share your guesses in the comments below!)

As the last few days of the fundraiser wind down, three premiere events tentatively scheduled for late 2022 have also been planned — in London, Los Angeles, and New York City — with the campaign soliciting ticket sales to the screenings as part of the open fundraiser perk packages.

Tickets for each premiere are selling for $200 USD each, with a discounted option for a plus-one to join you.

There are still three days left to donate to the Indiegogo fundraiser for To The Journey — Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager, and if you still want to get your hands on a Captain Janeway mug replica, exclusive T-shirt, tickets to a premiere event or more, you’ve got through March 31.

Polar Lights Reveals New 1:1000-Scale USS VOYAGER Model Kit, Plus: 1:1000-Scale USS EXCELSIOR Returns

Hobbyists have had a lot of time at home this past year to work on all their crafty Star Trek projects, and now the fine folks at Polar Lights are ready to add some Delta Quadrant flair into the mix!

Announced late last year, the new 1:1000-scale Intrepid-class USS Voyager is on the way from the long-running model company, with two versions of the famously long-traveled starship to chose from as builders set their course for home.

While this isn’t the first Voyager model released for hobby builders — Revell released a larger 1:670-scale version in Europe a few years back (available here for those interested) — this is the first “official” US release at this scale.

A prototype of Polar Lights’ 1:1000-scale USS VOYAGER model (via The Trek Collective).

Measuring in at about 13.5 inches when the snap-together kit is complete, the company is offering both an opaque version of the Voyager kit, along with a clear plastic edition which can be paired with internal lighting (not included) and then painted for additional realism.

Each version of the ship model also includes the Intrepid-class’s claw-footed landing gear (for an optional display variant), as well as clear nacelle parts, a clear deflector dish, and clear larger windows (such as the mess hall, etc.) — and movable warp nacelles, to reflect the variable-geometry engines seen in the series.

As with Polar Lights’ other kits, the models will also include all the necessary hull graphics and registry markings in the kits for those final touches.

Each of the 1:1000-scale USS Voyager models are set to retail around $44.99 and are up for preorder now at various hobby-shop retailers ahead of its May 2021 release; if you’re shopping online you can order through the CultTVMan store (opaque version here and the clear version here).

In addition to the new Voyager model, the Round2 team (via the AMT brand) is also reviving their 1:1000-scale USS Excelsior model from several years ago, with a reissue of Captain Sulu’s starship — just in time for the 30th anniversary of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

Included in this 18-inch model are decals to set the ship as either the Star Trek III-era or Star Trek VI-era registry (NX-2000 or NCC-2000), along with a domed display base and detailed sections of the ship like the under-slung cargo bay.

The Excelsior reissue is due out mid-year and can also be preordered from the CultTVMan shop for $35.99.

Round2 promises that they have “lots of other cool Star Trek stuff” on the way for 2021, so we’ll keep our eye out for more announcements as the year moves forward.

Bring Home Jerry Goldsmith’s Complete STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE Score in New Printed Collection

There’s a new release sure to perk up the ears of any musically-inclined Star Trek fan, celebrating the legendary soundtrack of the first franchise film: the complete printed score to Jerry Goldsmith’s Star Trek: The Motion Picture music!

Announced this week by Omni Music Publication, a massive 473-page publication collects every single measure of Goldsmith’s Motion Picture score, from the opening overture through the film’s closing credits — even musical moments written but never recorded for the movie — the first time any such printed work has been released for a Star Trek production.

Here it is, one of the holy grails of film music: the complete score to Jerry Goldsmith’s classic “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.” Every note of every cue is included. Every cue Goldsmith wrote is here, whether it was used or not, whether it was recorded or not.

This is one release you won’t want to miss. No other score in Goldsmith’s oeuvre comes close, It represents his modernism and romanticism side by side. This classic score has it all: adventure romance, and otherworldly suspense.

This is how you score the start of a franchise!

Musicians alike will delight in the endless textural invention, for Goldsmith had an unerring command of orchestration; every one of the 473 pages of orchestration reveal a mind that was able to create engaging music that perfectly suits the film.

Omni has also released three preview pages for the orchestral score, from the opening “Love Theme” overture, the “V’Ger Flyover” midpoint of the film, and the closing “End Credits” music, with individual musical direction for dozens of different instruments.

If you’re looking to score a copy of this, um, score, you can head over to Omni Music Publishing’s site now where the massive release is available now for $85.00.
