David Carson ‘Yesterday’s Enterprise’ Commentary Back on S3 Blus

David CarsonTwo weeks ago we published the full press release from CBS for the upcoming Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season 3 Blu-Ray set and noted the disappointing absence of David Carson’s Director’s Audio Commentary on the fan-favorite episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (Previously released on 2008’s “Alternate Realities” Fan Collective DVD.) At the time we were advised that this omission was due to contractual reasons. Thankfully it would appear that these issues have now been resolved; Our sources tell us that the Carson commentary will be included on the set after CBS managed to clear it for inclusion. Carson’s track will sit nicely alongside the brand new commentary from Ronald D. Moore and Ira Steven Behr which we’re reliably informed is fantastic! (Aren’t all Ron Moore commentaries fantastic!?)

The audio commentary count for Season 3 now stands at five:

With just over nine weeks to go until release, it’s reassuring that the team are pulling out all the stops to make this set as complete as humanly possible while at the same time sticking to their deadline. Be sure that you secure your copy today by pre-ordering the set below:

Exclusive: New Preview Images from “On Board the USS Enterprise”

Cover Art for On Board the USS EnterpriseWe recently announced the upcoming release of the new book by Star Trek stalwarts Mike & Denise Okuda titled “On Board the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D”, an inside look at one of Star Trek‘s most recognizable ships. The book comes with a special CD-ROM featuring an interactive tour of some of the more familiar locations on the ship, recreated using the latest computer-generated wizardry.

The “Okuda” name always brings a lot of anticipation with non-fiction Star Trek titles, and this is no exception. As part of our ongoing coverage of the release, we’ve got some new images from inside the book as well as some exclusive stills of the interactive tour featured on the bonus CD-ROM.

A number of people have asked about system requirements for the CD-ROM. The tour is presented as a browser-based package and can be viewed in any “suitable web browser”, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari. We’ve included a photo of the system requirements and instructions for those worried about compatibility issues.

Redesigned TNG DVD sets coming this April

StarTrek.com announced today that all seven seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation will be re-released in newly-designed packaging this April 16 as an Amazon.com exclusive. All previously-released DVD content is reported to be included – but the newly-produced Blu-ray documentaries, of course, will not.

The new packaging features silhouettes of Picard, Data, Crusher, Riker, La Forge, Troi, and Worf, along with an oddly-structured main title logo on each set. Strangely, the sets featuring Crusher has her in gold, wearing a Season One uniform… and the set featuring Troi has her wearing a red version of her ‘Encounter at Farpoint’ outfit, headband included!

[metaslider id=23610]

While some may question the need for a new DVD release in this age of high definition Blu-rays, keep in mind that these sets have a suggested retail price of $47.99 (though will likely sell for less) – a much more budget-friendly starting price than the Blu-Ray releases, appealing to those who aren’t as fussed about the remastering (although really – after seeing the Blu-Rays, we could never turn back!)

If you’re still looking to purchase the show on DVD, now is a good time to buy, as these prices are the some of lowest ever offered for the series sets.

Book Preview: “On Board the USS Enterprise”

Cover Art for On Board the USS Enterprise

Nearly twenty years ago, fans of Star Trek: The Next Generation were transported aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise through the Star Trek: TNG Interactive Technical Manual. Now, in the upcoming On Board the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, authors Denise and Michael Okuda return readers to the flagship of the Federation in a new book and multimedia package sure to bring back fond memories of the 24th Century!

The book/CD-ROM package is released by Barrons Educational Books in North America and Carlton Books in Europe and promises to lead readers on an in-depth tour of the Enterprise-D, from the Bridge to Main Engineering to Captain Picard’s quarters.

Accompanying the wealth of ship information are detailed diagrams of the interior and exterior of the Galaxy-class starship, with glossy pull-out diagrams and dozens of full-color photos.

The package also includes an interactive CD-ROM to lead fans on digital tours of many of the most well-known areas of the Enterprise – these virtual tours will allow fans to experience the next best thing to really being on board the famous starship!

Tobias Richter – who has contributed digital renders to Trek projects like the annual “Ships of the Line” calendar – has helped design several, all-new 3D renders of many of the Enterprise-D’s famous shipboard locations, like the Bridge, Sickbay, Main Engineering, the Transporter Room, and many more!

Mike and Denise Okuda have written and co-written several outstanding Trek reference guides over the years, which served as the most authoritative and in-depth guides to the 23rd and 24th Centuries before massive online reference sites like Memory Alpha were available to the general public. Many of you probably have one or more of their works on your bookshelves today, and can remember the hours spent pouring through their pages.

TrekCore will be bringing you a range of coverage on this release, including some previews into the book and CD-ROM as well as a full review. On Board the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D is scheduled to hit shelves on March 14, 2013.

tclogoThe last 18 months have seen a huge surge in activity at TrekCore as we continue to strive to bring you the latest news, interviews, reviews and behind-the-scenes information on Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s remastering into high definition. As our coverage has grown to include the upcoming launch of Star Trek: Enterprise on Blu-Ray in addition to profiling the latest Star Trek soundtracks and books and bringing you exclusive interviews with the people in front of and behind the camera, the existing manual system of publishing articles has become far too time consuming and troublesome and was starting to impact on the growth of the site.

As a result, we’ve switched to a new system designed to bring you content far more efficiently. Fear not! All existing content and comments have been ported over, and the new system offers a whole host of benefits:

  • All previous articles including TNG Blu-Ray, ENT Blu-Ray, Merchandise and Interviews have been centralized to the new TrekCore News Blog (blog.trekcore.com)
  • All comments have been transported over and our Disqus commenting system remains unchanged.
  • All articles and archived articles are now searchable. We’ve had countless requests for this feature, so we’re pleased to finally offer it.
  • You can now see the 5 most recent articles at a glance on every page in the right-hand navigation column.
  • You can also see the 5 most recent comments made by our readers.
  • Filtering news is very easy. For instance, If you are just here for news on the TNG Blu-Rays, you can choose to only view news in that category by selecting it in the right-hand column.
  • We can also finally offer RSS feeds for published articles so you can see at a glance what’s new.

BOBW Blu-Ray: New HD Trailer, HD Stills and Comparison & Analysis

Last week Amazon published a low-resolution copy of the a special trailer promoting the upcoming release of Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s “The Best of Both Worlds” on Blu-Ray. Since then, CBS Home Entertainment have released an HD version on their official YouTube channel which – whilst a vast improvement over Amazon’s copy – is still marred by heavy compression artefacts. I’ve been in contact with CBS who have kindly supplied us with a super high-resolution copy of the trailer for our readers to enjoy.

With every effort to restrain from breaking into excess hyperbole, the uncompressed HD 1080p trailer for this Blu-Ray is jawdroppingly beautiful and presents Best of Both Worlds in a quality unimaginable just a few years ago. Without further ado, here’s the higher-quality trailer on our YouTube channel. Analysis and stills follow. You can download an even better quality version below, with links to 1080p, 720p and 480p resolutions.

Download480p (52 MB) • 720p (131 MB) • 1080p (304 MB)

Kudos must again go to the company CBS has contracted to produce the trailers. This preview exudes off-the-scale epicness on every level. The tension and excitement of TNG‘s finest episodes are beautifully relayed in this trailer which – coupled with the glorious HD remastering – gives the episode a feature film quality.

TrekCore has got a special extended gallery of almost 200 HD 1080p screenshots from the trailer available for your viewing delight – just click here! In the meantime, here are some of our favorite shots alongside the original SD DVD quality that we’ve become accustomed to over the past 25 years.

Original SD (DVD) Remastered HD (Blu-Ray)
One of TNG‘s famous poker scenes. The overexposed SD shot is nicely rebalanced in the remastered HD print with new detail emerging and even the playing cards are legible!
Bravo CBS Digital! After the multitude of poorly composited viewscreen shots in the second season, this is a delight to see. No DNR visible, grain applied carefully and even a small correction – Admiral Hanson’s reflection is now visible in the Observation Lounge table.
A ten-fold increase in realism! I loved this shot in the original SD print, but now that the exposure is correct and little details such as the missing registry number underneath the nacelle have been fixed, it’s even more beautiful. Total wallpaper material for you all!
No, you’re not seeing double! The top two images are from “The Best of Both Worlds, Part I”, the bottom is from “Q Who” in Season 2. The shots use identical elements for the Enterprise and the Borg Cube, however the tractor beam was different. This is exactly the comparison which shows off the difference in the remastering techniques from CBS Digital (top row – “The Best of Both Worlds”, Season 3) and HTV Illuminate (bottom row – “Q Who”, Season 2). It’s night and day – the Borg Cube looks just like a toy model in HTV’s version of the shot, overly bright and artifical looking, even compared to the SD version of the same shot. Flip to CBS Digital’s version – the cube (admittedly a kitbash of model parts to start with) looks fantastically threatening against the Enterprise. The lighting, shadows and little flecks of green add a dimension of reality to the ship that is totally absent from HTV’s version. When you see the work of the two effects houses side-by-side like this, it’s quite clear that CBS Digital’s efforts come out on top.
Oh my! The true colors of the Paulson Nebula can finally be seen. It’s such a vivid creation and the original element translates beautifully to HD. The washed out colors and video tracking lines of the original print will soon be a distant memory.
Another huge jump in quality. The Borg uniform is such an intricate piece of costuming, and every different texture and material glistens with the new HD transfer. Also – look at the new details coming through in the ceiling pattern behind the drone. Fine detail like this makes the show look so much more realistic.
Oh brother! Those command reds just pop off the screen in the remastered version. CBS Digital do fantastic work with color correction. TNG is a colorful show, but that saturation has always been masked due to how the show was edited in standard definition. It’s vivid shots like this that bring the show alive.
I’ve always loved this shot of badass Beverly taking out a drone with her phaser. The rotating frequency phaser beam looks awesome here. I know from speaking with Eric Bruno and CBS Digital just how long a shot like this takes to knock out (we’re talking upwards of an hour per phaser beam) so the amount of work the team have had to do for an episode like this would have been significant. Their efforts and attention to detail have really paid off – they managed to make Beverly look even more badass!
Mr. Worf, Fire! Damn, it keeps getting better… a pretty ropey shot of the model to start with, the team have done wonders with the lighting and shadow work here. Lots of “extra love” went into this shot – the reflected light of the deflector beam against the underside of the saucer section and the shadows it casts look incredible. I could wax lyrical about shots like these forever – fantastic work.
This shot has undergone some pretty major work, all for the better I would say. The overly exposed lighting has been toned down to appropriate levels of Borg Cube creepiness and the existing matte painting has been replaced with the new interior matte we saw in Season 2 – complete with moving drones in the background. Very cool!
Close-up shots like this really show off what a huge leap SD to HD is for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The Borg headpiece was such an intricately designed appliance made with incredible craftsmanship during the production of the show. It totally holds up in high definition and looks even more disturbingly alien.
The terrific pay-off for the episode: the destruction of the Borg Cube. This was always a shot to marvel at, even with the restrictions inherent in SD resolution. In HD, this comes close to perfection. I am totally digging the fires streaming out of the cube prior to explosion. The debris thrown out in the explosion looks far more realistic here and the slightly dubious “firework-style” remnants shooting out in all directions have been toned down to a more subtle and ultimately more realistic level. Again, beautiful work.

Star Trek: The Next Generation – “The Best of Both Worlds” will be released on a special single disc Blu-Ray edition with both parts edited together as a special feature length movie. The disc is chock full of exclusive bonus features including an audio commentary from Director Cliff BoleShelby actress Elizabeth Dennehy and Mike & Denise Okuda. There’s also a brand new gag reel unearthed from the original film-reels and a special documentary “Regeneration – Engaging the Borg”. Fans in the US & Canada should expect a release date of April 30 for this disc (the same day Season 3 is set to hit shelves). Fans in the UK can get their copy one day early, as Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) have nominated April 29 as their release date.

A few notes on the press release. Notably absent from the Season 3 set is David Carson’s audio commentary from “Yesterday’s Enterprise” which was previously released on the “Alternate Realities” Fan Collective DVD. We’re told this couldn’t be included for contractual reasons. UPDATE: We’re told that CBS have secured David Carson’s commentary and it will be included! Ron Moore and Ira Behr’s commentary on the episode is brand new, recorded specially for the Blu-Rays. Furthermore, we’re advised that CBS were unable to include the text commentaries previously released on the Fan Collective DVD special sets, including “Deja Q” (from the Q Fan Collective DVD set), “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (from the Time Travel Fan Collective DVD set), “Sins of the Father” (from the Klingon Fan Collective DVD set) and “The Best of Both Worlds, Part I” (from the Borg Fan Collective DVD set).

Ron Moore’s commentaries are also a delight to see listed… Ron previously made it clear that he’d love to record commentaries for all of his episodes, and it looks like the team were able to schedule him for all but one this season (unfortunately a commentary on Moore’s “The Defector” is absent). Hopefully there’s enough prep-time between now and Season 4 to allow Moore to complete commentaries on all seven of his episodes in that season! Fingers crossed!

Fans can now pre-order both “The Best of Both Worlds” and Season 3 from Amazon. We’ll have more news and previews of the sets as the release date gets closer! Watch this space.

Enterprise Season 1 Blus: Special Features Preview Clip

Last month Yahoo TV posted an exclusive preview of the 3-part documentary “To Boldly Go – Launching Enterprise”. Unfortunately, the video was restricted to fans in the United States only. Thankfully CBS have now released the video through YouTube so fans worldwide can watch.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zP17Atuw76g

The clip features executive producer Brannon Braga and actor Scott Bakula talking about the character of Captain Jonathan Archer. Bakula recalls how initially he wasn’t interested in the role of Captain Archer under the assumption that the character would follow on from Kate Mulgrew’s Janeway. When producers told him that their intention was to place the character 100 years before Kirk and Spock, Bakula was more than happy to sign on the dotted line.

In addition to the three-part documentary chronicling Enterprise‘s conception, the Blu-Ray set features a candid conversation piece between producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, a never-before-seen exposé on the filming of an Enterprise episode in “On the Set” and a whole raft of new audio commentaries in addition to the original collection of bonus material from the DVD release.

Fans worldwide can lock in a pre-order for Season 1 of Star Trek: Enterprise below.
