Beaming to Dubai: STAR TREK BEYOND Interview

It’s been a quiet week for STAR TREK BEYOND news — allowing us to catch our breath for a few days! — so we decided that it’s time to look forward to the next phase of the BEYOND buildup: the move from Vancouver, British Columbia to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

We’ve already seen the major casting call for extras ahead of the movie’s arrival to the modern city, and the launch of a new internship program, but while there’s still only rumors about what we’ll see when the crew of the Enterprise gets there, we wanted to reach out to those responsible for bringing the film into town.

We reached out to Jamal Al Sharif, Chairman of the Dubai Film and TV Commission, and Managing Director of Dubai Studio City, for a brief chat about STAR TREK BEYOND, which begins filming there later this month.

*   *   *

TREKCORE: In the United States, the Star Trek story is an indelible part of popular culture that even those who have never watched a Trek movie or television episode know of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, warp speed, phasers, etc. How would you compare the Arab world’s perception of Star Trek, and its role in the local pop culture?

al-sharifAL SHARIF: Star Trek is very well-known across the Arab world and a big part of pop culture here in the Middle East.

The excitement across Dubai and the region following the announcement that Star Trek will film in Dubai has genuinely shown how large the sci-fi and Star Trek fan base is here.

The Middle East Film and Comic Con, held in Dubai, also attracts thousands of visitors every year, and has pioneered a real community of sci-fi fans across the region.

The upcoming filming and release of Star Trek will connect Trekkies in the Middle East to those around the world, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of this global franchise together.

TREKCORE: In North America, many film sites are chosen based on local financial advantages – tax benefits, lower production costs, et cetera.

What type of incentives does filming in Dubai provide to draw international productions like STAR TREK BEYOND to the UAE?

AL SHARIF: Dubai enjoys a tax-free environment and the government is fully committed to positioning the Emirate as a film and TV hub, with the Dubai Film and TV Commission offering unique incentives to productions, such as discounted flights, hotels and logistics.

TREKCORE: As part of the agreement to filming in Dubai, does your agency have any say into how the city is represented in the film? What role do you see the city taking in the picture?

AL SHARIF: Production companies and location scouts tend to have their film’s story and location in mind when looking at different destinations. When visiting Dubai, I think the team were impressed at the diversity of locations the Emirate offers, as well as the ease at which filming can take place.

mi4
‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ was the last large Hollywood feature to film in Dubai.

We will not determine how the city is portrayed in the film, however, I am confident that Dubai will be an important part of the film.

TREKCORE: This is the first Star Trek production to take place outside of North America – as the first global Trek adventure, what do you think that Dubai contributes to the film as a filming location?

AL SHARIF: Dubai’s unique locations, excellent connectivity and cutting-edge infrastructure have set it apart as a truly dynamic filming destination.

Dubai’s diverse locations include skyscrapers, beaches, desert and more, and the production facilities on offer across the Emirate are world-class. This city is versatile and can add a rich variety of backdrops to any film, and Star Trek will be no different.

As production moves from Canada to the United Arab Emirates during the next few weeks, we’ll be eagerly watching to see what the trip overseas brings for STAR TREK BEYOND.

Friday STAR TREK BEYOND Updates: Alice Eve Still “Not Sure” About Carol Marcus, New Location Photos

Early last month, Star Trek Into Darkness actress Alice Eve wasn’t sure if she’d be back on the Enterprise for next year’s STAR TREK BEYOND, and in a new interview with Bustle she confirmed that her role in the new film is still unclear.

I’m not sure where they’re going to take it I’m definitely still talking to J.J. about where Carol is and her future and where we can take her.

The conversations I’ve had with J.J. have been about Carol’s trajectory in the ‘Star Trek’ universe, and this film is not necessarily J.J.’s film.

Eve’s comments are certainly based upon the fact that with director Justin Lin and writers Simon Pegg / Doug Jung at the helm, things may not necessarily be so cut-and-dried regarding Carol Marcus — Into Darkness guest actor Joseph Gatt confirmed at the Las Vegas con that all the plans for Science Officer 0718 went out the window after the script turnover following Roberto Orci’s departure.

Just yesterday, we reported that STAR TREK BEYOND is spending the week outside at the Pitt River Quarries near Vancouver — and thanks to Robin K., we’ve already got site photos.

It’s certainly difficult to determine what this place is being used for; the set at the quarry is hidden behind the plywood construction at the center of these photos, but we definitely get a great view of the size of the staging area needed to support an outdoor shoot in such a rugged location.

With all of Zachary Quinto’s recent selfie shots on social media, some fans have speculated that he’ll be wearing a Vulcan bowl-cut wig in STAR TREK BEYOND, rather than have his own hair cut in Spock’s classic style.

This new Instagram shot with a fan should end that debate, as the actor is seen here, trying hard to look normal with that goofy hairstyle in public.

Thursday STAR TREK BEYOND News Roundup

We’ve got a couple of news bullets from Vancouver’s STAR TREK BEYOND production, starting with a taunting tweet from guest actor Idris Elba.

After last week’s photos revealing Sofia Boutella’s alien makeup and costume to the world, our biggest question about the cast is what role Elba will play in the upcoming film — and what a tease this is!

*   *   *

A new STAR TREK BEYOND outdoor set is under construction in Vancouver’s neighboring city, Richmond, BC. First spotted by Twitter user Jamieson84 last week on Richmond’s Triangle Road, what started as an undefined build of plywood has sprouted into a large complex very similar to the gigantic Kent Hangar Field set we’ve been watching for several weeks now.

We learned of one other new outdoor location shoot thanks to a hint from Zachary Quinto’s own Instagram feed on late Tuesday night.

We’ve learned that STAR TREK BEYOND is spending the week filming at the Pitt River Quarries in Red Dear, BC, a rocky location northwest of Vancouver.

Quinto’s set-side Spock selfie from Tuesday evening was shot at this location, and the cast and crew will be shooting at this location for the next several days.

More of Quinto’s New STAR TREK BEYOND Uniform

Zachary Quinto took to Instagram this evening in full Spock regalia, straight from the STAR TREK BEYOND set, to show off another look at the revised Starfleet uniform first seen in great detail during last week’s leak from the Vancouver set.

https://www.instagram.com/p/61DhraLi2p/

This is our best look yet at the redesigned Federation duds the crew will be wearing in the new film — the raised collar callar is much clearer here, and a glimpse of the darkened underarm panels can be seen as well — and it’s now clear that the Starfleet-delta-pattern fabric is gone in this revision. As with the previous two films, the arrowhead insignia is attached to the front of the uniform.

His hand sure looks beat up, though, in this shot — and it’s clear that Vulcan blood remains green in every Trek universe.

Sensors Detect… a STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT Deleted Scene!

The four Next Generation films generated a host of footage that ended up being cut from the final theatrical presentations: Generations featured the famed Shatner skydiving sequence and Kirk’s original death, Quark’s visit to the Ba’ku homeworld got the chop from Insurrection, and the Enterprise-E lost its new first officer after Nemesis went through the editing bay.

Star Trek: First Contact, however, is somewhat of an anomaly in the big-screen adventures of Captain Picard and crew. Nothing extraneous from the 1996 film has ever surfaced, aside from reports of a few sequences that never made the leap from script to set, including a scene where Zefram Cochrane jumps from a cliff to be caught by a force field. Additional reports of scenes cut after the UK premiere of the movie have never been able to be verified, even nearly twenty years after First Contact debuted in cinemas.

Now, however, we have hope that there is more First Contact out there than previously assumed! Business consultant and motivational speaker James Mapes, who also takes occasional acting roles, has in his performance reel a short excerpt from Lily and Picard’s visit to the Enterprise holodeck, which was excised from the final cut of the film.

Oh, and we figured we’d ask the guy who shared this footage with the world how he ended up with Captain Picard on the Enterprise-E holodeck in the first place!

*   *   *

JAMES MAPES: “My family is in the movie-making business. My wife’s father was head of Columbia Pictures under Harry Cohn; her stepfather and son each made about fifteen films each; our son spent nine months on Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. I had been acting since I was young, the first movie I got to be a part of was Taxi Driver.

Don, my son, used to be at Paramount, and I used to be able to visit the Star Trek sets – one time I said to him, “You know, I’d really love to be in a Star Trek movie!” Don was able to arrange a meeting for me with Rick Berman.

mapes-blueface-st6I went into his office – it was just this huge office, with a blindfolded bust of Gene Roddenberry on his desk – and he was telling me they were working on things they didn’t want Gene to see! [Laughs]

We talked about a lot of things, he knew I was an actor, and was fascinated with the presentations I was doing, some of the hypnosis work I was doing, and I was sitting there trying to figure out how to approach the subject — how do I tell him I want to be in a film? So we talked for like thirty minutes about philosophy, and life, it was just a great conversation, and he didn’t ask me anything!

So I get up, and I said, “Well, thanks for the time.” He said thanks, and as I touched the doorknob, he says, “James, would you like to be in the next film?” Well! [Laughs] I thought I was going to faint!

So that was Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country – but it was a miserable experience. It was like ninety degrees, and I’m covered in this phosphorescent blue paint that took four hours to do. I was on set for about a week, and while I thought it was kind of cool, I didn’t really want to do something like that again.”

A few years later, I got another call from Rick, who said he had a part for me in Star Trek: First Contact. So I fly out to California, and it really was a dream. I actually spent some time with Patrick Stewart at the premiere party for opening night of his A Christmas Carol show, so when I showed up on set, we really had a great report. I’ve always liked Alfre Woodard, too, so it was just a blast.

Six weeks after the shoot, though, I got a call from Rick. “I’ve got some bad news for you,” he said, “I hope you’re not going to hate me.” He told me that my part was cut because the film was spending too much time on the holodeck. I was crushed.

mapes-fcHe said that he and Jonathan Frakes were going to do another cut of the film that would get the footage back into the movie, but unfortunately it never happened.

Rick did, however, write me a part as a Klingon captain in one of the later movies, but I wasn’t able to make it due to a speaking engagement I couldn’t reschedule. I even told the clients I’d do the presentation for free if they’d let me change the date, but we couldn’t make it happen.

I have a several careers, but acting I love – and that First Contact thing I really, really loved.”

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Okay, we’ll admit that clip is not a lot of new material — but with the absolute vacuum of deleted footage from the eighth Star Trek film, any hint towards the existence of more Trek movie content only amps up our desire for a fiftieth-anniversary revisit to the film series’ home media releases.

Break the Seal: Cracking Open 20-Year-Old STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT Chocolate Bars

There has been a lot of strange Star Trek merchandise released over the last forty-nine years, and likely many of you have one or two of those weird items in your own collections.

Over the past few days, we’ve been discussing the unusual Star Trek: First Contact chocolate bars on our Facebook page, issued by LEAF in 1996, and there were several requests to see what they look like today.

bars-labels

From the 1996 press release:

The crews of the Starship Enterprise enjoyed chocolate in space, and now, with the recent release of Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek: First Contact,” Earthlings have a new “collectible” limited-edition chocolate bar from Leaf Inc.

Under license from Viacom Consumer Products, Paramount’s licensing division, “Star Trek: First Contact” Chocolate Bars feature six collectible wrappers using graphics on seven different molded Star Trek chocolate images, including a top view of the new Starship Enterprise, NCC-1701-E.

“The ‘Star Trek: First Contact’ molded chocolate bars will offer the `Star Trek’ fan a unique and innovative collectible,” said Greg Barratt, senior vice president of marketing for Leaf.

“Our intention from the beginning was to give the Star Trek fan the highest level of quality in our chocolate, packaging graphics and collectibility. We feel the Star Trek fans and our friends at Paramount deserve nothing less,” he said.

The candy bar is Leaf’s first venture into “collectible” confections, and sales have far exceeded Leaf’s — and Viacom’s — expectations, according to Nancy Williams, public-relations counsel for the candy company.

“We thought it would be a medium-sized promotion,” she said. “But it’s a strange phenomenon, the whole trekkie thing. They (the trekkers) love it.

“After eating the candy, they can use the wrapper like a trading card. We’ll sell as many as we can make. Now we’re waiting to see if it’ll still be as popular when the movie leaves theaters,” she added.

The LEAF bars were sold in six different wrappers — strangely, there was no Data edition — each with one of seven molded chocolate designs imprinted on each bar. Our own collection, as it survives today, contains four of these designs.

The other designs from this collection included the Enterprise-E, the Vulcan lander seen at the end of the film, and one other image we’ve not been able to identify. Here’s the only image of the Vulcan landing craft we’ve been able to find:

Spock And McCoy To Be Screen-Time Buddies in STAR TREK BEYOND, Says Zachary Quinto

In a new interview with London’s The Telegraph, Zachary Quinto revealed that he — and by extension, Spock — will be spending most of his STAR TREK BEYOND screen time not with Chris Pine, but with Karl Urban’s Leonard McCoy.

He’s developed a… kind of camaraderie with his ‘Star Trek’ cast mates, which has been helpful as the franchise moves from director J.J. Abrams to Justin Lin (who’s done three ‘Fast & Furious’ movies).

He doesn’t share many scenes with his good friend Chris Pine, who plays Captain Kirk, instead spending most of his screen time with Karl Urban’s Bones.

“Those characters are so diametrically opposed that it’ll be nice to see them interacting,” he says.

Many fans have grumbled about Urban’s low-key role in the last two films; the biggest McCoy scene in Star Trek Into Darkness was more about Carol Marcus and her mysterious torpedo than about the Enterprise doctor.

Perhaps this is a sign that the good doctor will have a larger part to play in STAR TREK BEYOND? We’ll find out next July.

Germany’s Star Trek TOS DVD & TNG Blu Steelbooks

Earlier this year we took a look at the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Best Buy Steelbook release, showing off the first classic Star Trek film to receive the metal collector’s packaging.

While there have been several Steelbook releases for J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek film, as well as Star Trek Into Darkness — both domestically and abroad — there hasn’t been any other North American Steelbook packaging offered for the ‘prime’ universe.

Germany, however, is a different story! Since the launch of the remastered Star Trek series on home media in 2009, German fans have had the unique privilege of receiving some great-looking metal-cased releases of both the classic Trek series — and Star Trek: The Next Generation — from Paramount Germany.

The classic Trek DVD Steelbooks are broken up into six sets, modeled after the TOS Blu-ray packaging, adding in a unique purple casing for the second Season Two box.

tos_steelbooks_1

tos_steelbooks_2

While these sets contain Region 2 DVDs — not watchable in North American without a region-free DVD player — the Steelbooks certainly have enough slots to hold the TOS Blu-rays, should you choose to repackage your HD discs.

[metaslider id=23369]

Included in the first-season Original Series sets is this unique circular advertisement card for the rest of the sets, released later in the year.

With the launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray in 2012, Paramount Germany again crafted a set of Steelbook releases for the seven seasons of the show, in jumbo-sized cases with a spanning spine image featuring the TNG cast.

Each TNG Steelbook set also shipped with a high-quality collector’s pin, shaped like iconic graphics from the series.

Even though it’s been some time since each Steelbook set was first released, each is still available for purchase through Amazon Germany — but be warned, they’re not cheap.
