Trek Comics Review: “Star Trek / Green Lantern #3”

1

In brightest day, in blackest night… tur Trek Comics editor Patrick Hayes is here with his review of the next chapter of IDW Publishing’s Star Trek crossover comic: Star Trek / Green Lantern: The Spectrum War!

gl3-covers-large

This third installment brings a trio of covers to add to your collection:

Order Star Trek / Green Lantern #3

  • A trio to trek to your local store to add to your collection. Tony Shasteen has a vividly colored A cover that features Larfleeze about to pound on Spock. Kirk tries to defend his first officer with a phaser blast, but it doesn’t seem to be deterring the orange ring wielder. All the characters look good, with the film characters looking like the actors who portray them. Larfleeze also looks good. Some artists make him comical, but Shasteen nails the frightful face of this inhuman powerhouse. The greens are spectacular, making this cover a major eye catcher against paler comics.
  • The B cover is by Rachel Stott (who did a sensational job on the Star Trek/Planet of the Apes mini-series) with colors by Davide Mastrolonardo. This is a terrific cover showing Hal Jordan and Kilowog flying in space with the Enterprise in close pursuit. This is a very slick way to mash up the franchises in space. The characters look excellent.Looking at the way Stott is drawing these DC characters, I’d love to see her get a crack at one of the monthly Lantern series. And take a gander at Hal’s gesture with his left hand!
  • Garry Brown does the art and Doug Garbark the colors on the final cover, the C. This is a surprising image of three ring bearers, McCoy, Guy Gardner, and Spock, flying quickly through space, heads down, their rings blasting something below them. I did not expect to see Guy in any part of this series, so this was an nice surprise, and a very welcome one.I like the angular look of the art, but I do wish the colors had been a bit brighter; this comes off as too sedate.

gl3-story

The first four pages of The Spectrum War: Issue 3, written by Mike Johnson, explains how the lanterns are in the Star Trek universe, and it’s very clever. Ganthet, the last Guardian, used an escape plan called “The Last Light.” He combined “the power of multiple power rings to create a rip in space-time and open a portal to a parallel universe.” Doing so cost the Guardian his life.

On the positive side, it pulled every surviving lantern with it, which is how Hal and the others are now in the Trek-verse. Kirk correctly asks what threat caused Ganthet to enact this protocol. Page 2 reveals it was Nekron, the Black Lantern, who is able to resurrect the dead — essentially as zombie lanterns. This is the second time Nekron fought all the lanterns, and he realized his advantage this time: “there will always be more dead he can raise than there are living to fight back.”

Nekron was on the verge of winning when Ganthet made his fatal decision. A quick discussion reveals what the colors represent and why some of the Enterprise’s crew wears rings, but Hal warns Kirk that some of the other ring wears are not going to be friendly.

The story then travels to three of these new ring wielders, all Star Trek characters, who have to realize that they are no match for the masters of each ring, who arrive on the scene. The character who seems most willing to speak with the leader of the red rings was a good surprise, what the new orange ring wearer does to his own people is shocking, and Sinestro continues to be one of the best written villains in comic book history.

After the villains get their pages, one member of the crew goes out and enjoys his ring, encountering a pair of famous lantern heroes. The issue ends with someone else about to punch their way into the Star Trek universe. No reader will have to think too long about who that is.

This issue justifies how these characters can meet, how the Star Trek ring wearing villains realize they’re part of a larger group, and the real threat is revealed. I liked the reasoning behind this series which follows the events of the 2009 – 2010 Green Lantern saga Blackest Night. If you’re a Star Trek fan, this may be too super hero heavy for you, and the scenes that are spent with Star Trek characters are overshadowed by the lanterns.

I’m a big Lantern fan, so this didn’t bother me a bit. I thought that this much time had to spent with the lanterns since they’re the ones that are now placed in the Star Trek realm. After this issue, I’m sure the next will have a more equal split, considering all will have to give up any animosity toward the others to survive the individual who threatens them all.

gl3-art

The visuals by Angel Hernandez are good. His character work is tip top.

The Trek characters are close enough to the actors’ likenesses. The story doesn’t provide him with many opportunities for Kirk and his crew to do much beyond standing and listening to the information that Hal gives them. However, he does move his point of view around well enough to keep these scenes visually interesting. Chekov is the one character who gets to do something major with his ring. Granted, it’s only for one page but it says a lot about his character and it will have readers wishing they were him instantly.

The lanterns get the most face time in this issue. The double-paged spread of Pages 2 and 3 shows the various lanterns in battle with Nekron’s forces and it’s got a lot of bodies in action. I like what I see, but I wish the image was pulled in a little closer, because there’s a lot of dead space in the top center of this image, as if Hernandez didn’t know where the narration would be set or how much of it there would be.

Watching how the villainous Trek lanterns interact with the lantern masters was very good. I like how the leader of the reds went old school in his constructs to take out the Gorn, though I’m still not sold on this design of this reptile species. I’m an old codger on Gorn, and if doesn’t look like the costume Bobby Clark wore, I’m not going to be happy. Much better is the scene on Romulus. Excellent setting and outstanding actions. That was a highlight! On Kronos Sinestro is in charge and Hernandez has brilliantly captured his smug, superior attitude.

The indifference and then glee that splits his face with a smile is perfection.

gl3-colors

With all the colors of the spectrum coming into heavy play in this installment, thanks to the focus on the lanterns, Alejandro Sanchez really has to sell the power of these characters. He does a good job of this on Pages 2 and 3. Each lantern leader has the familiar colored energy silhouette around him or her to be a tell-tale sign to readers as to who’s wearing a ring.

The strongest colors are yellow and blue on these pages. The greens are okay, and are the majority of colors on this page, but they come off flat. In fact, when energy is released from a lantern in the form of a power blast, Sanchez colors the energy white instead of green. It’s okay, but this doesn’t look right to Green Lantern fans.

Later in the book, when the villains are spotlighted, the colors are much more dynamic. The reds really stand out against the brown Gorn world, the oranges are delicious on the Romulan homeworld, and the yellows are glorious on Kronos. The different shades of orange and yellow that appear on these pages are fantastic. Sanchez also got Sinestro’s red face perfect. Sometimes colorists make it too pinkish, but Sanchez has it absolutely right.

The interiors of the Enterprise should also get a shout out for Sanchez. Of late, the Enterprise’s interiors are colored glaringly white to ape the style of the ship’s rebooted look, or it’s got a faded quality to cover background insertions.

I’m not a fan of a pure white ship or bridge — I mean how much cleaning has to be done on this ship for fingerprints, smudges, etc.?, so I was relieved to see that Sanchez has colored it a pale blue. This gives the interiors a cool sci-fi feel and has a more active background for characters. A good choice!

gl3-letters

Dialogue, narration, and scene settings (the same font), yells, sounds, and next issue’s tease are crafted by Neil Uyetake.

I don’t like having the first three elements all be the same font. Doing so creates confusion: a reader might assume that it’s all dialogue, for example. I’d rather there be a unique font for each. I would also have rather seen some of the alien dialogue written in a different font, such as the Gorn. This race has never sounded on the original series or Enterprise like a “normal” humanoid, so their should be a font to show this.

That said, the sounds are fun, with the final one that occurs outside on the Enterprise’s dish very cool.

Quinto’s Spock Seen on STAR TREK BEYOND Set? Plus: Michael Giacchino Offers Soundtrack Update

As we reported yesterday, primary production on STAR TREK BEYOND wrapped up this week — but that doesn’t stop us from bringing you more from the sets!

Twitter Trek fan TrekkieKindTrekker posted a set of photos this evening reportedly from October 11 at the Dubai Central Park Towers location, claiming to feature an appearance by Spock actor Zachary Quinto, wearing heavy Vulcan robes.

We can’t confirm this clearly-Vulcan male really is Quinto, but he certainly shares a strikingly similar profile. Back on October 12, we shared a photo which seemed to feature a Vulcan male getting some attention from the BEYOND on-set makeup team, and this may be the same figure from that photo.

One other bit of news this week, as composer Michael Giacchino gave a minor update to his plans for his upcoming work on STAR TREK BEYOND in a new interview with France’s Daily Mars (translated):

I’m preparing for sessions for Star Trek Beyond. They’re about to finish shooting, and I’ll be seeing what they’ve done over the coming weeks.

I’ve talked quite a few times with Justin Lin, but this is the first time I’ve worked with him. Whenever I work with a new director, I want it to be a collaboration – and it’s nice, with great ideas. I think it will be fun to do some things differently than what JJ [Abrams] might have done.

I know [Lin] wants to continue in the spirit of what has been done before, but I also expect we’ll see what can be done differently – this usually comes with the villain of the film. We’ll see.

STAR TREK BEYOND Wraps Principal Production

After three and a half months of filming across two continents, STAR TREK BEYOND completed its main phase of production on Thursday in Dubai.

The cast and crew began to announce their departure from the project on social media yesterday, bringing their active participation in the film to a close.

Zachary Quinto also took to Instagram, posting a video of his curtain call as Spock, embracing director Justin Lin on set.

“This,” Quinto noted, “maybe for the last time. Maybe not.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/84pI4Wri68/

As we reported back in June, both Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are already under contract for a potential Star Trek 4 should Paramount and Skydance continue the current film franchise.

With months of post-production still to go before the July 22, 2016 release date, however, it’s likely going to be some time until we learn of any plans to go ahead with another entry with this cast.

Keep coming back to TrekCore in the weeks and months ahead as we continue to track STAR TREK BEYOND through post-production, theatrical release, and home-media debut next year.

Dubai, Day 5: Get Ready to Say Goodbye to BEYOND

Time is winding down for STAR TREK BEYOND, but we haven’t stopped watching!

First today up is Chris Pine on set with lucky visitor Sara Al-Pachachi — note here that he’s wearing the blue “away uniform” pants first seen in the Screencrush set leak photos out of Vancouver.

https://www.instagram.com/p/80cZLlv_fD/

We’ve also got another round of set photos from a new location in Dubai, the base of Daman Tower. Judging by the lack of Starfleet uniforms, this seems to be a more civilian-centered area.

We also have several new videos, which seems to focus on a children’s area.

Note the four-segemnt trampoline in use in the first clip, and the camera dolly centered around a young girl with parent in the second video.

A few barely-humanoid alien creatures roam the walkways; just imagine how hot it must be inside those costumes! The first creature seems to be tethered to a portable cooling unit to keep the actor inside the giant prosthetic safe.

Lastly today, we have a few extra things we’ve picked up through social media. First is this thank you card sent to Vex Motorsports in California, who provided vehicle parts used in the film.

A late holdover from Canada, this patch was given out to members of the grip team who worked on set in Vancouver.

Everything’s going to wrap up tomorrow in Dubai — but we’re not finished with our coverage yet. Stay tuned!

REVIEW: “The Autobiography of James T. Kirk”

auto-kirk-coverThe Autobiography of James T. Kirk chronicles the greatest Starfleet captain’s life (2233–2371), in his own words.

From his birth on the U.S.S. Kelvin, his youth spent on Tarsus IV, his time in the Starfleet Academy, his meteoric rise through the ranks of Starfleet, and his illustrious career at the helm of the Enterprise, this in-world memoir uncovers Captain Kirk in a way Star Trek fans have never seen.

Kirk’s singular voice rings throughout the text, giving insight into his convictions, his bravery, and his commitment to the life—in all forms—throughout this Galaxy and beyond.

Excerpts from his personal correspondence, captain’s logs, and more give Kirk’s personal narrative further depth.

Order The Autobiography of James T. Kirk:

While James T. Kirk is arguably Starfleet’s “greatest captain,” we haven’t gotten his life story in his own words… until now.

Thanks to his editor, David A. Goodman, and the application of some “wibbly-wobbley timey-wimey” stuff, you can now read The Autobiography of James T. Kirk right from the horse’s mouth!

The book itself is laid out in a chronological fashion, with Kirk’s childhood and early years comprising the early chapters and his later Starfleet career making up the majority of the book.

kirk-small
Jim Kirk’s entire life is covered, including his time at Starfleet Academy.

Revealed are his experiences on Tarsus IV during the massacre by Kodos the Executioner and the events that led him to apply to Starfleet Academy, all the way up to the days leading up to his disappearance during the maiden voyage of the Enterprise-B in Star Trek: Generations. The conceit is that this memoir is published posthumously, with a touching foreword by Leonard McCoy and an afterword by Spock of Vulcan.

It’s a fairly quick read, with Kirk moving quickly from one event to the next. If there is any kind of main throughline to the story, it is Kirk’s attempts to balance his personal life with his professional life as a Starfleet officer.

Time and again, he must sacrifice his sustaining of a relationship or any semblance of a “normal” life in order to chase his best destiny: command of a starship. From that one woman from far in the past who touched his life, Edith Keeler, to Carol Marcus who ends up being the mother of his son, Kirk struggles to find love and ultimately winds up married to his career above all else.

kodos-kirk
All of Kirk’s major experiences are touched upon – and of course, his time on Tarsus IV.

One fun thing that this book does is to link disparate parts of Kirk’s life together, bringing deeper meaning to what were once small “throwaway” lines in Star Trek episodes and films. Additionally, in what will likely prove to be a controversial choice for many Trek fans, David Goodman deals with the inconsistencies in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier in a very unique way.

Another great touch was the addition of “editor’s notes” throughout the narrative that lent a feeling of verisimilitude to the pages of the book. Little things that Kirk gets wrong in the book that are “corrected” by the editor make this feel like a real autobiography. Also, a full color insert of pictures in the middle of the book from Kirk’s life, including his Academy graduation photo and travel documents to Tarsus IV, lend even more credibility.

I definitely preferred the parts of the book where an effort has been made to expand on or create new events in Kirk’s life, rather than rehashing what we already knew. There are some interesting insights to be gleaned here, and Goodman’s writing kept me interested throughout the book such that I finished it quite quickly, reading through it in a couple of evenings.

st5-beam
So, did this happen – or not?

If you are interested in learning more about the process of writing this book or further insights from the author on his experience in creating Kirk’s backstory, please check out the latest episode of Literary Treks, in which I and co-host Matthew Rushing talk to David Goodman at length about this book!

Final thoughts:

From reading The Autobiography of James T. Kirk, it’s very clear that David A. Goodman knows his stuff. He captures the unique voice of Kirk in the pages of the book, and his relationships with those around him feel very real.

I would have like the book to go more in depth in some of the areas we know less about, but Goodman does a very good job in balancing what we know with new material. There are some very clever choices made in this book that made me grin, but that might make other fans dislike the direction he takes.

Unfortunately, you can’t please everyone, but I think that Goodman has crafted an entertaining life story for our intrepid captain, and this volume will have a place on my bookshelf.

Another Day in Dubai for STAR TREK BEYOND

The STAR TREK BEYOND shoot in Dubai is winding down, but we’re still tracking the production as it completes its final days overseas. After yesterday’s deluge of new set photos had us reaching for the coffee last night, we took a breather and set up again for today’s updates!

So far there’s only a handful of new images making their way out of the city, but we’ll be updating this post throughout the day as new photos (or videos!) make their way to us.

First up, here’s a nice look at some more of the local, alien foliage that’s been dotting the outdoor Dubai locations:

Closest Look Yet at New STAR TREK BEYOND Starfleet Outfits, Get Your STLV Cosplay Ready Now

One more update out of Dubai today, as we have our closest look yet at the mysterious new Starfleet attire worn on the STAR TREK BEYOND sets over the last few days.

Now we still can’t make out that tantalizing assignment patch featured on each actors’ shoulder, but it does appear to be the same logo seen on the Starfleet base’s entrance that we observed on Sunday.

These outfits seem to be an nod to the future of Starfleet uniforms, with the department colors on the upper back and shoulders, and what appears to be rank insignia on each jacket collar. Additionally, our friend in blue seems to have some sort of technology embedded in the left sleeve of his jacket.

unis4Additional photo by Blaise Simon.

As we know, director Justin Lin brought costume designer Sanja Hays on board to replace Michael Kaplan (who dressed the previous two films). These new jumpsuits, along with the new costumes seen in the August set footage out of Vancouver, definitely show that she’s thinking much differently than her predecessor.

Oh, and one other thing: it looks like the ladies will have their rank braids back in STAR TREK BEYOND, too.

Dubai, Day 3: More From the STAR TREK BEYOND Set With a Look at Both New Uniform Designs

STAR TREK BEYOND has moved to the base of the Jumeirah Lake Towers in Dubai for filming today, where another crowd of Starfleet-clad extras are shooting scenes from the upcoming movie, and once again, the local employees of the large business complex have their cameras out for us to get a peek into the set.

First up, here’s out first closeup shots of both the new Starfleet duty uniforms first seen on Zachary Quinto back in August, as well as the new “jumpsuit” uniforms we first spotted at the Central Park Towers location on Saturday. It’s still difficult to make out the shoulder patch on these new outfits, but they’re clearly Starfleet in design.

Pine, Quinto, and Elba Talk Dubai in New STAR TREK BEYOND Interview; John Cho and Deep Roy Arrive

The cast and production leadership of STAR TREK BEYOND appeared at a press conference in Dubai to launch the start of filming in that city back on September 30, and today the first interview from that event has hit the airwaves.

Scoop with Raya — an Arabic-language entertainment show similar to Entertainment Tonight in the United States, hosted by Raya Abirached — snagged Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, and Idris Elba for a sit-down discussion about filming in Dubai. As this interview is available online (but region-blocked in North America and much of Europe), we’ve transcribed the relevant conversation below.

scoop-quinto-urban

RAYA: Have you ever seen Dubai in a film? Have you watched Mission: Impossible? What were your thoughts?

QUINTO: I loved it in Ghost Protocol. I mean, I remember that sandstorm – I was like, “What?! How is that…” I mean I know that happens – but not to that degree, correct? Is that my understanding?

RAYA: Well, it can be really intense, but obviously heightened for the blockbuster.

QUINTO: Yeah, heightened for the film, cinematically enhanced, as it were. I think we’re just all really excited to be here, and to learn our way around the city in the next few weeks and have the experiences of everything that it has to offer.

RAYA: And here’s my job… Middle East, or Middle Earth?

URBAN: [Laughs] Middle East! I’ll stick with reality!

scoop-elba-pine

ELBA: [I’ve seen Dubai] in Mission and one or two other films. I’m actually very proud that [the UAE] is committed to being a player in the film industry. It’s great.

It’s amazing, because again, you know, I’ve traveled around the world, and I think every culture offers something different in terms of how they approach film, what you can get from the different environments around the world.

Shooting in South Africa, shooting here… your camera sees something different and the camera absorbs it. I think there’s a great future in film for Dubai for sure.

PINE: I couldn’t say it any better. I think, again, it gets back to what film and art can do, which is to show the world different parts of this incredible world in which we live.

There are many different parts to this world, and the first time I ever really saw Dubai was in Mission: Impossible and seeing Tom [Cruise] hanging off the side of [the Burj Khalifa] which we’re going to see today, actually. It’s incredible.

I’m really kind of moved about how ancient this part of the world is, and yet how forward-thinking… I’ve never seen a cityscape like this, and as Idris [said] we travel everywhere doing what we do, and this cityscape, this landscape, this architecture is really stunning.

While the actors don’t offer any details to their roles in the Dubai filming, it’s nice to see them acknowledging the opportunity to shoot in such a unique location.

One other bit of Dubai news: it looks like both John Cho and Deep Roy have finally made the journey to join the rest of the cast overseas for BEYOND, meeting Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Simon Pegg for dinner in a local Italian restaurant.

This would seem to leave Zoe Saldana as the only one left in the United States, as we saw Sofia Boutella land in the UAE last week.

More From the STAR TREK BEYOND Shoot in Dubai

Filming continues this Sunday in Dubai as STAR TREK BEYOND hits the ground at the Central Park Towers, and after yesterday’s collection of photo and video views of the production proved so popular, we definitely wanted to keep watching through the weekend!

As first seen in one of the videos we posted yesterday, this crash site is now definitely identified as some sort of Starfleet facility, as indicated by a large Starfleet sign found at the entrance to the nearby building. The complimentary sign opposite the familiar Starfleet delta is as of yet still unreadable — but it seems to have both the familiar olive leaves of the United Federation of Planets logo and some sort of “target” graphic — maybe this is a Starfleet Security facility?
