A Trio of STAR TREK BEYOND Videos Feature New Footage

A pair of new STAR TREK BEYOND videos have arrived today, each featuring new footage from the upcoming film, as well as new interviews and some behind-the-scenes action from set.

Spoilers below!

First up is this TV spot which aired earlier today, advertising the annual MLB Home Run Derby, featuring previously-unseen clips of the Swarm attack mixed in with baseball content.

Secondly, a new video interview featuring Idris Elba, Simon Pegg, Chris Pine, and Justin Lin comes courtesy of The Telegraph, focused on Elba’s bad-guy character Krall. This minute-long release also has some snippets of new Uhura / Sulu footage, as well some behind-the-scenes content.

Look closely and you’ll see updated visual effects on Krall’s “database,” first shown in May’s second trailer, as well as mechanical motion built into the circular elements of Krall’s suit.

Lastly, Paramount has released a new behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of Rihanna’s “Sledgehammer” music video, which includes on-location set footage as well as commentary from the video’s director Floria Sigismondi.

Just a few more days, everyone!

Simon Pegg Expands Comments on STAR TREK BEYOND’S Sulu Revelation

Last week’s news that John Cho’s version of Sulu will be portrayed as a gay man in STAR TREK BEYOND hit the Trek universe with great impact, generating a whole lot of conversation – civil and otherwise – about the character’s new status.

After comments by Simon Pegg and Zachary Quinto were made public – reacting to George Takei’s disapproval of the change – the debate only increased between those who felt that a new gay character should be introduced, rather than “changing”  one already established.

Pegg expanded upon his stance in a new blog post released today on his official site, and here are some relevant excerpts:

The fact is, we chose Sulu because of George, there was something sweet and poetic about it. Introducing a new gay character had its own set of problems, as I mentioned before, the sexuality of that character would have to be addressed immediately and pointedly and the new characters in ‘Star Trek Beyond’ have enough on their plate, without stopping to give us the intimate details of their personal lives.

[…]

So why persist when George Takei wasn’t keen? The thinking behind embracing an existing character was that it felt as though it retroactively put right something that had long been wrong. By the time, we mentioned it to GT, the idea had taken shape, it felt good, interesting and worthy of thought and conversation.

We were disappointed that George didn’t see it that way but, truth be told, Sulu Prime seemed to be missing a very important point. With galaxies of respect to the great man, this is not his Sulu. John Cho does not play a young George Takei, nor does he play the same character George Takei played in the original series.

He is a different Sulu.

With the Kelvin timeline, we are not entirely beholden to existing canon, this is an alternate reality and, as such is full of new and alternate possibilities.

[…]

Well, the explanation comes down to something very Star Trek-y; theoretical, quantum physics and the less than simple fact that time is not linear. Sure, we experience time as a contiguous series of cascading events but perception and reality aren’t always the same thing. Spock’s incursion from the Prime Universe created a multidimensional reality shift.

[…]

The Kelvin universe can evolve and change in ways that don’t necessarily have to follow the Prime Universe at any point in history, before or after the events of Star Trek ‘09, it can mutate and subvert, it is a playground for the new and the progressive and I know in my heart, that Gene Roddenberry would be proud of us for keeping his ideals alive.

Infinite diversity in infinite combinations, this was his dream, that is our dream, it should be everybody’s.

pod-sulu

Ultimately, if we love Star Trek, we are all on the same page, we all want Gene’s idea of a tolerant inclusive, diplomatic and loving Universe to become a reality. For those who have joined this debate in the spirit of discussion and forward momentum, it’s been a pleasure to see your reactions.

For those who have seen it has an opportunity to sling abuse, or be rude and presumptuous, please take a long hard look in the mirror and remember we are discussing the personal details of a fictional spaceman.

In the words of Martin Blank, who are you mad at? Because it’s not me.

You can read Pegg’s full comments here – and let us know your thoughts on his stance in the comments below.

New STAR TREK BEYOND Clip Reveals Jaylah’s Skills

A brief new promo arriving through social media out of Argentina today reveals a bit of new knowledge about the Enterprise crew’s new ally Jaylah – it seems she’s adept at repairing Starfleet equipment.

Seems like “Montgomery Scotty” approves of her handiwork, which appears to have helped bring the USS Franklin back to life. Since we know that Jaylah’s spent most of her life on this planet – and that the Franklin is from the pre-Federation era – she’s likely been working on the downed ship for a great deal of time.

‘Cupcake’ Actor Surprised He Got to TREK BEYOND

In a new interview with the 3 Black Geeks podcast, Kelvin Timeline actor Jason Matthew Smith – aka Lt. “Cupcake” Hendorff in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness – revealed that his character was supposed to die in the 2013 film, but that his death was cut before final release – allowing the security officer to return for STAR TREK BEYOND.

Here’s the thing about [the Qo’noS mission in “Star Trek Into Darkness”]: the actual footage of me [in the final] film is so brief, it’s right when Kirk comes in – and then you really don’t see me after that.

When I went to go see the premiere with my wife, it was a cast and crew screening, my wife had already known I was gonna die. So I went into the theater, and I had shot all of this footage – I shot for three months! When my scene was coming up, and I didn’t die, I kind of let out a verbal “I’m alive!”

hendorff2
Hendorff was last spotted in the back of the confiscated “Mudd incident” shuttle at Qo’noS.

Then I was like, well, maybe thay saved it for the deleted scenes – so I had to wait for the DVD to come out and see, and it wasn’t [included]… and then I heard they were coming out with the third film.

Nobody was calling me, and I heard Simon Pegg was coming on board as a writer. I had Simon’s email from the first movie, and I had never written him in eight years, so I decided to send him a quick email.

He emailed me right back, and said, “We’ve got something for you in this new film, and we’d love to see you up in Vancouver. We gotta keep the band together.”

I was blown away, and I was very appreciative, and very fortunate to do three. I still can’t believe I’ve done three Star Trek films.

In the Into Darkness novelization, Hendorff is killed by a bat’leth during the mission – and this confirms that sequence was actually shot on set.

As we saw in one of X-Box Live deleted scenes that didn’t make it to the Into Darkness Blu-ray release, Hendorff’s partner (played by Ser’Darius Blainwas killed during the Kronos mission, gunned down by a Klingon soldier in front of Kirk’s eyes.

UPDATE: Despite his return for filming, Smith’s scenes were all cut from the theatrical presentation of STAR TREK BEYOND.

Smith’s Hendorff returned to the Enterprise for the third movie in the rebooted Star Trek series, “Star Trek Beyond,” which opened this week. And again he was supposed to die. But — spoiler alert — Hendorff lives to see another day, although that was a surprise to Smith.

“I went to the premiere, and all of my scenes were cut out,” Smith said Friday at San Diego Comic-Con. “I was supposed to die at the hands of (Idris Elba’s) Krall in the third one. So this is two movies in a row.”

Producer J.J. Abrams told Smith that, once again, Hendorff had been spared from death because of tweaks to the story during the editing process and said that the red shirt would return for an almost unheard-of fourth time in the next sequel.

Guess we’ll look for Hendorff in STAR TREK 4.

Smithsonian Video: Sally Ride’s STAR TREK: VOYAGER Commbadge

We’ve spent the last two years talking a lot about the Enterprise model’s adventure at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum, but there’s one other Star Trek artifact that’s landed on public display this month: the first Star Trek: Voyager artifact to become part of the museum’s holdings.

Astronaut Sally K. Ride, who became the first American woman to venture into space in 1983, was invited to Paramount’s 1995 premiere of “Caretaker,” the pilot episode of Voyager – and as a thank you for helping to launch the first Trek show helmed by a woman, the scientist was presented with her very own, screen-used Starfleet commbadge.

After Ride’s death, the twenty-year-old commbadge prop was rediscovered by the Smithsonian team at her home, and is now part of the Sally K. Ride collection on display in the new Boeing Milestones of Flight Hall in Washington.

George Takei Finds Sulu STAR TREK BEYOND News “Unfortunate,” Zach Quinto and Simon Pegg Respond

While much (though not all) of the Internet rejoiced after yesterday’s news that Sulu in STAR TREK BEYOND will be portrayed as a gay man, original Sulu actor George Takei shared his reaction with The Hollywood Reporter, indicating that while he was briefed on the character’s development last year, but was strongly against altering, in his words, Gene Roddenberry’s “creation” of the Sulu character.

“I said, ‘This movie is going to be coming out on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek, the 50th anniversary of paying tribute to Gene Roddenberry, the man whose vision it was carried us through half a century. Honor him and create a new character. I urged them. He left me feeling that that was going to happen,” Takei says.

After that, all was quiet from Beyond until a few months ago, when Takei received an email from Pegg “praising me for my advocacy for the LGBT movement and for my pride in Star Trek,” he says. “And I thought to myself, ‘How wonderful! It’s a fan letter from Simon Pegg. Justin had talked to him!'” Takei was certain the creative team had rethought their decision to make Sulu gay.

That is until one month ago, when he received an email from Cho informing him that the actor was about to embark on an international media tour for Beyond. Cho said it was bound to come out that his character was gay, and “what should he do?” A disappointed Takei told Cho to go about his promotional duties, but that he was “not going to change” his mind on the matter.

“I really tried to work with these people when at long last the issue of gay equality was going to be addressed,” Takei says. “I thought after that conversation with Justin that was going to happen. Months later, when I got that email from Simon Pegg, I was kind of confused. He thinks I’m a great guy? Wonderful. But what was the point of that letter? I interpreted that as my words having been heard.”

After Takei’s somewhat disapproval broke, BEYOND actor Zachary Quinto, a publicly gay man himself, responded to Takei’s comments in a video interview.

For those of you who aren’t able to watch the video:

I get it. [Takei] has had his own personal journey and has his own personal relationship with this character but, you know, as we established in the first ‘Star Trek’ film in 2009, we’ve created an alternate universe, and my hope is that eventually George can be strengthened by the enormously positive response from especially young people who are heartened by and inspired by this really tasteful and beautiful portrayal of something that I think is gaining acceptance and inclusion in our societies across the world, and should be.

Additionally, writer Simon Pegg gave a statement to The Guardian, ‘respectfully disagreeing’ with Takei’s comments.

I have huge love and respect for George Takei, his heart, courage and humour are an inspiration. However, with regards to his thoughts on our Sulu, I must respectfully disagree with him.”

He’s right, it is unfortunate, it’s unfortunate that the screen version of the most inclusive, tolerant universe in science fiction hasn’t featured an LGBT character until now. We could have introduced a new gay character, but he or she would have been primarily defined by their sexuality, seen as the ‘gay character’, rather than simply for who they are, and isn’t that tokenism?

Justin Lin, Doug Jung and I loved the idea of it being someone we already knew because the audience have a pre-existing opinion of that character as a human being, unaffected by any prejudice. Their sexual orientation is just one of many personal aspects, not the defining characteristic.

Also, the audience would infer that there has been an LGBT presence in the Trek Universe from the beginning (at least in the Kelvin timeline), that a gay hero isn’t something new or strange. It’s also important to note that at no point do we suggest that our Sulu was ever closeted, why would he need to be? It’s just hasn’t come up before.

Our Trek is an alternate timeline with alternate details. Whatever magic ingredient determines our sexuality was different for Sulu in our timeline. I like this idea because it suggests that in a hypothetical multiverse, across an infinite matrix of alternate realities, we are all LGBT somewhere.

Whatever dimension we inhabit, we all just want to be loved by those we love (and I love George Takei). I can’t speak for every reality but that must surely true of this one. Live long and prosper.

This will clearly continue to be a controversial topic, and we encourage all our readers to remain civil in our comments.

WRATH OF KHAN Blu-ray Replacement Mailers Arriving

Fans who submitted their requests for replacement copies of the new Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan – Director’s Cut Blu-ray discs last month are now starting to see the Paramount-promised return mailers arriving to get the process started.

Due to the volume of submissions, responses to the email submission for the TWOK replacement program have been slow – but those who sent in their information should be receiving a FedEx envelope with return details any day.

Here’s the return instructions, included in Paramount’s mailing:

Once returned, Paramount will be issuing corrected copies of the Wrath of Khan Blu-rays back by mail. If you haven’t yet purchased your copy of the new edition, remember to watch out for the yellow UPC barcode featured on the new edition.

LGBT Representation Finally Arrives in STAR TREK BEYOND

As revealed to Entertainment Tonight earlier this year, John Cho’s Hikaru Sulu has a young daughter in STAR TREK BEYOND – but in a new interview with the Herald Sun at the Australian premiere of the film, the actor also elaborated on Sulu’s family: the helmsman’s got not just a daughter, but also a male partner – making BEYOND the first Star Trek adventure to feature a same-sex couple.

John Cho:

“I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.”

This new development for the Sulu character has been reported to be a tribute to Original Series actor George Takei, who has become a prominent voice for gay rights in American culture after publicly coming out himself in 2005.

While LGBT themes have been touched upon in TV Trek – most notably in TNG’s “The Outcast” and “The Host,” and of course DS9’s “Rejoined” – this will be the first time that a true same-sex relationship will be depicted in the Star Trek franchise.
