Last night, the annual GLAAD Media Awards bestowed their highest television honor on Star Trek: Discovery, which after three years of nominations finally landed its first win in the Outstanding Drama Series category.

These annual awards “honor media for fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of LGBTQ people and issues,” and Thursday’s ceremony bestowed the win on Discovery for its portrayal of Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz), Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio), and Grey Tal (Ian Alexander) during the series third season.

“We are so proud and thrilled to be receiving this honor,” said Cruz during the acceptance video, thanking the organization “for supporting us, promoting us, and consulting with us to bring to life this story of our beautiful chosen family in space.”

One of the two series newcomers, Blu del Barrio, shared that when they were first cast as the nonbinary Adira Tal — as the actor has discussed previously — they were “only just beginning to understand and accept [their] own gender identity, so it felt like a real gift from the universe to get to play this smart and self-assured character… who is existing in a time where being trans and nonbinary is completely accepted.”

Ian Alexander noted that through Discovery, “Our community is being seen the way that we want to be, the way that we finally deserve to be — as our most authentic selves.”

Cruz and Rapp, who each portray half of the first ongoing same-sex relationship in a Star Trek television series, have been with the show since its debut in 2017; del Barrio and Alexander joined the show in 2020 as the first nonbinary and first transgender actors in the franchise.

All four actors will continue with the series in its upcoming fourth season, which is in production now in Toronto and expected to debut in late 2021 on Paramount+ in the United States, CTV Sci Fi Channel in Canada, and on Netflix in all other international regions.
