STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Welcomes You to the Year 3188 With a New Trailer, a New Poster… and a New Logo!

Believe it or not, it’s been 11 months since the first Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 trailer debuted at New York Comic Con last October — but as part of today’s Star Trek Day celebration, the first real look at the show’s upcoming return is finally here, with a few surprises along the way.

The newest Discovery Season 3 trailer has just arrived from CBS All Access as part of the show’s Star Trek Day livestream event, and with it comes a new extended trailer for the season! As Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery crew drop out of their time-travel vortex and arrive in the year 3188, the team finds themselves in a galaxy where an event known as “The Burn” served as a catalyst for the Federation’s near-collapse.

Along with the Discovery regulars — Saru (Doug Jones), Tilly (Mary Wiseman), Stamets (Anthony Rapp), Culber (Wilson Cruz), and Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) — recurring characters Jet Reno (Tig Notaro) and Nhan (Rachael Ancheril) can be spotted in the trailer, along with the familiar bridge crew of Detmer (Emily Coutts), Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Nilsson (Sara Mitich), and Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.)

We also get more time with newcomer Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala), as well as see more of the recently-announced characters of Adira (Blu del Barrio) and our first view of young Trill character Gray (Ian Alexander), who seem to share their own connection.

Aside from the dramatic image of the USS Discovery crashed on the surface of a barren planet — and Burnham making that same erratic descent in her Red Angel suit — we also get a look at the commander back in her gold-toned command uniform for the first time since “Will You Take My Hand?” in Season 1.

While she looks to be still holding the Commander rank in the brief glimpse of her duty uniform, we later see her sporting the new 32nd century Starfleet badge revealed by CBS marketing last month as the crew settles into life in the future.

Captain Saru after all? Looks like the Kelpien has taken command for real.

But while Burnham may be back as the ‘Number One’ of Discovery, it looks like Saru finally gets to be the official Kelpien in the command chair, as we see him all dressed up in a Discovery-era captain’s uniform (with gold piping on the shoulders), and wearing both 23rd and 32nd century combadges with four rank pips.

Here are a few other notable images from the trailer:

Along with all of the new video footage, CBS All Access has also debuted the first official look at the Season 3 key art with this new poster featuring the entire regular crew, joined by Book (David Ajala) and Adira (Blu del Barrio), signifying their importance in the upcoming season.

Finally, if that wasn’t enough, there’s also a brand new logo for the series! As Star Trek: Discovery leaves the 23rd century behind, it seems that the original series title treatment wasn’t granted access to the Red Angel wormhole — and a new streamlined title design joins the crew in the far future.

Series executive producer Alex Kurtzman related the reasons behind the logo change in the opening moments of the Discovery livestream panel; the original design used in Season 1 and 2 was meant to evoke the Klingon War, and as the story has progressed away from Klingon involvement, the show’s title design needed to evolve as well.

After all of that serious news about the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery, we also got a bit of humor in the casting of Leeu, a Maine Coon cat, as “Grudge,” the 32nd century sidekick of Cleveland “Book” Booker — and who got her own video featurette and publicity photo this afternoon.

In the meantime, what do you think of the new Discovery trailer, poster, and title treatment? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Star Trek: Discovery returns on October 15, exclusively on CBS All Access (USA), CTV Sci Fi Channel (Canada), and October 16 on Netflix (in other global regions).
