First announced back at San Diego Comic Con in July, the second season of Star Trek: Discovery will be preceded by a set of four short films set in the Discovery era — Star Trek: Short Treks.
While two of the planned 15-minute standalone stories are set to center around Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Saru (Doug Jones), the other two will move outside of the Discovery cast regulars. Back in late July, Short Trek writer (and upcoming Picard series executive producer) Michael Chabon shared a photo from his time on set in Toronto, where his story “Calypso” featuring guest star Aldis Hodge was being filmed.
On Saturday, writer Mike McMahan — best known for his work on the Emmy-winning Rick and Morty animates series — arrived in Toronto to oversee his own entry to the Short Treks series, which centers on the return of Harry Mudd in a new tale involving the space trader.

This afternoon, Mudd himself — and Short Treks director — Rainn Wilson returned to the Discovery stages (with a pair of green-skinned Orions in tow) to share a first look at the character in costume since his last appearance in “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Man” last October — and along with his photo, a caption indicating we’re going to here some more Short Treks news very soon.
Guess who’s back!? (Ok, I’ll tell you.) #HarryMudd Big announcement on Thursday from @StarTrekCBS! pic.twitter.com/snqpAfxE3o

Hopefully this upcoming “big announcement” will detail the planned release schedule for the four Short Trek features — and perhaps CBS may even move forward with a specific Season 2 premiere date for Star Trek: Discovery, currently billed as returning in “early 2019.”
It’s also reasonable to speculate that the news may tie into the upcoming appearance of the Star Trek: Discovery cast and crew at New York Comic Con on October 6, where it’s possible new footage from Season 2 — or perhaps one of the Short Trek films — will be showcased for the attending crowd in the Big Apple.
Whatever comes, you can be sure that we’ll bring you all the details as they break here at TrekCore — so keep an eye on our news feeds for all the latest information!
