Roddenberry Shows Off TREK ‘Picard Desk Monitor’

At the Star Trek Las Vegas convention this week, licensee Roddenberry.com finally revealed the long-assumed third entry in their ongoing “Picard Desk Set” prop reproduction series: the captain’s Starfleet desktop monitor, as see in his Enterprise-D ready room.

Following the crystal paperweight and isolinear circuits prop replicas from 2016 and 2017, the Picard desktop monitor is the first electronic piece in their replica series, with integrated lighting and sound elements. Roddenberry representatives told us the monitor was recreated directly from 3D scans of a surviving TNG-era prop to ensure exacting specifications; it’s been machine-crafted from a solid piece of polymer material.

Up close with the monitor, it certainly seems like a stunning piece of work, especially with the brightly-lit LCARS-style graphic overlay (replicated from TNG Season 3’s “Suddenly Human”) and the interactivity of the display button (which triggers the audio effects as well), but the price tag may be even more stunning: each is being offered for preorder at $2,500.

While the company tells us that they are expected to limit the production run to 100pc or less of this new project, the relatively limited functionality seems high for the cost — but they project it will likely sell out by the end of the convention.
