Announced today by Variety is the news that Star Trek: Discovery executive producer Alex Kurtzman will helm the forthcoming Season 2 premiere, set to start filming next month in Toronto.
This episode, which kicks off the second season following both the arrival of the USS Enterprise (as seen in “Will You Take My Hand?”) and Section 31 (should the WonderCon clip be considered canon), will be Kurtzman’s first time in the Star Trek director’s chair, though of course he has been part of the franchise since the first Kelvin Timeline film went into production in 2007 in both writing and producing capacities.
No date has yet been publicly announced for when Discovery will return to television, but previous estimates have been either late 2018 or early 2019 based upon statements made by the production team.
Also expected to return to Toronto for Discovery‘s second season is Trek actor and director Jonathan Frakes, who told a crowd at Lexington Comic & Toy Convention that he’s already started getting scripts and story outlines from the earlier entries in the upcoming season, but there has not yet been any formal announcement of him being assigned an episode.
