Earlier this year we took a look at the Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan Best Buy Steelbook release, showing off the first classic Star Trek film to receive the metal collector’s packaging.
While there have been several Steelbook releases for J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek film, as well as Star Trek Into Darkness — both domestically and abroad — there hasn’t been any other North American Steelbook packaging offered for the ‘prime’ universe.
Germany, however, is a different story! Since the launch of the remastered Star Trek series on home media in 2009, German fans have had the unique privilege of receiving some great-looking metal-cased releases of both the classic Trek series — and Star Trek: The Next Generation — from Paramount Germany.
The classic Trek DVD Steelbooks are broken up into six sets, modeled after the TOS Blu-ray packaging, adding in a unique purple casing for the second Season Two box.
While these sets contain Region 2 DVDs — not watchable in North American without a region-free DVD player — the Steelbooks certainly have enough slots to hold the TOS Blu-rays, should you choose to repackage your HD discs.

Included in the first-season Original Series sets is this unique circular advertisement card for the rest of the sets, released later in the year.

With the launch of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray in 2012, Paramount Germany again crafted a set of Steelbook releases for the seven seasons of the show, in jumbo-sized cases with a spanning spine image featuring the TNG cast.

Each TNG Steelbook set also shipped with a high-quality collector’s pin, shaped like iconic graphics from the series.

Even though it’s been some time since each Steelbook set was first released, each is still available for purchase through Amazon Germany — but be warned, they’re not cheap.
